There is one thing I love about Heretic which puts it apart from other early fps games, in fact most other games of the era. Whether intentional or not, you have the option of two different strategies. In Doom it is pretty much only the “grunt” strategy which works. Shoot, move forward, pick up gun, shoot, move forward, pick up armour, pick up better gun, shoot, move forward. This is an effective strategy in Heretic if you are an experienced gamer - I had never played in this way, having come to Heretic before Doom but I saw my friend use it to devastating effect. The second strategy is the one I favoured in Heretic, that is what I will call the “spide 'n snipe” strategy. Basically you scuttle from hole to hole using primarily the elf wand and dragon claw, relying on the fact that most enemy projectiles can not hit you behind much of the cover but you can still hit them. It is a cowardly way of fighting but how I imagine the Elf actually conducting his dark vendetta. You can combine and alternate these strategies at any moment making for diverse, interesting and imersive game play. Unlike the reviewer I vastly preferred Heretic to Hexen, I feel that in Hexen your character class pretty much dictated your strategy, ie: until you get the Bloodscource, anything but the “spide 'n snipe” approach will likely get the Mage killed. I also feel that the Hexen story line was far less interesting than the Heretic story line. As for Heretic II, I have little to say about that, other than that I vastly preferred even Hexen. What I appreciated about Heretic was the overwhelming sense of hopelessness, particularly on the hardest setting, the asymmetrical warfare type elements and the Elf knew it was basically a suicide mission: he wasn't saving the world which was already f__ed, he wasn't helping anyone, he was just going to get D'sparil no matter what and kill as many of the bastards as stood in his way. I have the concept for a game inspired by Heretic, it allows you to play as an Elf or as a Dark Elf, yet while these offer different options during the game, they shouldn't determine your strategy. The only fps game I have played which came close to the “feeling it” experience I got from Heretic was Far Cry II which I maintain to be the best of the series. As for the music, I often turned it off in the options and played my own music.

It's hard to say which is better Heretic or Hexen. That's why I love them both! In my opinion, the hardest maps of Heretic were episodes IV and V (expansion episodes). The beginning ie. first level of those episodes is tough even for Heretic fans. Otherwise, the game is nicely balanced between weapon power and, for example, enemy hitpoints and enemy count in general. I fell in love with Heretic because of the fluid gameplay and the stellar atmosphere. The soundtrack is awesome and really enhances the mood even in the cutscenes between the episodes as well as in Hexen. Level design is excellent, too, and they are full of secret doors, rooms and passages. It's weird that there are very few medieval or fantasy themed FPS. Witchaven is maybe the only one from the 1990s golden era of classic fps gaming before 3d cards.

I can't say if Doom 2 or Heretic is better. In my opinion Doom is somehow ugly compared to Heretic. Although the monsters in Doom 2 look great and the variety is astonishing, many of the textures are either very dull looking (plain colors and lots of gray/green) or very saturated (e.g. later hell levels with red/pink/orange/yellow lava stuff etc.). Heretic was always a lot more pleasing to my eye. I especially loved that every (original) episode looked so different from each other. I also enjoyed the level design in Heretic much more. There are of course some iconic Doom 2 levels, but in general towards the end of the game they become very abstract and confusing. Both are great games in their own ways.

Surprised to hear what you said about ammo management in Heretic compared to Doom and Doom 2. Weirdly I have the reverse issue. In Doom episodes 2 and 3, and for much of Doom 2 (Ultraviolence skill level), I usually tend to exit levels in single player with a full inventory of shells and bullets, but rarely with a full load of plasma and rockets - save toward the end of Inferno, and in the latter levels of Doom 2. But in Heretic (Thou art a Smitemeister skill level), I pretty-much always start each new level with a full inventory of ammo for all weapons, and one of each inventory item. The only possible exceptions are episode 2's The Catacombs, which is a bit tight on crossbow ammo. Maybe it's because I manage ammo very carefully, never wasting ammo by picking up, say, 20 crossbow arrows, when I already have 95 etc. I always backtrack around the level once I get to the exit, picking up stuff I saved for later, and ensuring I got all secrets etc. I also tend to use the gauntlets and wand a great deal against standard Gargoyles, and boss-level enemies are typically fought with the gauntlets plus a tomb of power In any case, in most cases complete each Heretic level with loads of ammo and items to spare and never run out, save possibly in E3M1 where ammo is seriously scarce.
@lurkerrekrul10 жыл бұрын
I played through Heretic (also Hexen and the Doom games) using the JDoom sourceport, also known as Doomsday. It gives you mouselook, true 3D rendering and the ability to turn off auto-aim so that you can actually aim where you want. Besides being mindful of how much ammo you have, you should also be mindful of what creatures you alert. If you just run blindly through the levels, you'll alert a bunch of creatures at once and have a hoard of them after you. If you move around more carefully, you can often fight them a few or even one at a time, which makes things easier. You can also sometimes get them to fight each other.

Unlike Doom, Heretic has proper "ghosts", which objects (certain projectiles) will just pass through. Especially the Undead Warrior Ghosts, whose own projectiles will travel through each other (and you as well when you use Shadowsphere), so UWGs can hit you even if they are standing behind any other type of ghost. And that is why the Mace is considered woeful - it is utterly useless against ghosts, same with fire orbs (but the splash damage DOES hurt them). I love how that system works in Heretic. And the Disciples can just turn into ghosts if they want to in order to avoid Phoenix Flame Orbs.

I appreciate Heretic in all the same ways but it's a rather simplistic review. Heretic has an inventory of items and enemies divide into two basic states the normal state and ghost state. In ghost state the enemies can only be damaged by magic weapons, which is an important gameplay element. In Doom enemies don't have immunities. Also, another important point about Heretic is that there are no ranged hitscan enemies in Heretic, all are either melee or shoot projectiles you can dodge, which is a gameplay improvement over Doom as pure skill is a greater factor than RNG.

The gauntlets resemble chainsaw. What a timeless classic, awesome game
@firstpersonshredder89338 жыл бұрын
Gauntlets = chainsaw. And with source ports like zdoom you can bind items to keys though that isn't the vanilla version. For hexen you could even with chocolate hexen

Have you played the Witchaven games? They're kinda similar to this.

He reviewed witchhaven along with two other games by the same developer because they were of such a low quality.

+pixl_man Witchaven could have been a great game but Capstone screwed it up horribly. The movement and animation is so bugged it's practically unplayable. It always looks like the animation is running at 5 fps or something. I really hope they had put more effort on that game. It could have been among the greatest Build engine games ever.

I just started this yesterday, using GZDoom. I tried it in the 90’s and didn’t get far but now I’m determined to finish the fight.

I played this as a kid when I was 7. I remember the giant skull monster. It always killed me. I wasn’t even sure if it was killable or if you were meant to just run past it some how.

Is there anyway to fix the controls in this game on steam?
@Gggmanlives9 жыл бұрын
+MP2066 Just grab the Wad file from the Heretic folder and use a source port like Zdoom to play it.

I got a real kick out of the way you described the story! But, only three episodes? I have never seen the game with less than five. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if they were expansions, just like how Ultimate Doom got a fourth episode, but you ought to have mentioned those other episodes, especially since no one is going to be able to buy the game today without getting it with five episodes, either from GOG or Steam, and I think I even saw it for sale straight from the developers just a few years ago.

The retail version (called Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders) came with the most recent patches and two new episodes, much like Ultimate Doom. They're good, but not earth-shattering, nor as game-changing as, say, Quake or Duke Nukem's expansions. It is odd he didn't mention them, though, given that SotSR was also released as a patch for the original mail-order version, so I don't see how he could have missed it (unless Australian Internet Problems struck again).
