another fun fact if you type the same two cheats into Heretic this is the messages you'll received IDDQD - Kills the player. Originally the Godmode cheat in Doom, it is a joke by the developers by making it have the opposite effect in Heretic. When entered, on the screen is displayed: "Trying to cheat, eh? Now you die!" IDFKA - Removes all weapons and ammo the player is carrying, except for the staff. Any weapon that exists as a map item can be regained by picking one up, but the Elven Wand will be lost for the remainder of the game session. It can, however, be recovered by using the "rambo" code. Just like the 'iddqd' cheat, this code is from Doom. In Doom, it gives all keys, armor and ammo. In Heretic it does the opposite by taking them all away. The screen says: "Cheater - you don't deserve weapons!"

Daniel Scott in my opinion, and some other people, Wolfenstein 3-D helped get the FPS genre off the ground, but Doom popularized it, and helped it become what it is today. for crying out loud, if any other first person shooter games came out at the time of the original Doom’s existence, they were called Doom clones.

Yes, it alike Mario Bros for PC. All kids of 90's that had computer played Doom, Warcraft (aka: War), X-Com, Lotus Challenge, Nascar (Spent lot of time in its cars editors), Day of Tentacles, and some others... Agree with Jesse Schmies, just to note, Doom had this falling feature and floor and ceil sizes, flying objects and other things, this made the game have a lot of new parameters and much things to explore, making people raising their eyes for Doom more than they did for wolfenstein, there is an interesting part of the wiki article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_(1993_video_game)#Reception After adding jump with zdoom, the game became "limitless", as we can see in the modding community of Doom. Also, it had multiplayer and created the term "deathmatch", basically, its the precursor of this multiplayer fps "addiction" we have today that got consolidated after quake, half-life and then, a little later, Counter-Strike, that appeared in the "golden era" of FPS.

I'm so glad I was a teen when Doom came out. Those were the good old days... You'd buy a video game, and you'd get the entire game. The WHOLE game. It really irks me to see the garbage that a lot of these companies release for $60 a piece that barely function. Then they have the balls to sell "expansion packs" and include microtransactions. Do people still have LAN parties? I really miss those. Sure, it's fun to obliterate your enemy online, but nothing tops clobbering them in a house full of people and yelling "since you're dead anyway, can you grab me a Jolt from the fridge?"

That's awesome! I honestly wish I were just a few years older when the game came out. I was barely 6, but I remember getting my dad's permission to download it from some FTP. Sadly I never played a lot of deathmatch, just coop over modem with my school buddies. More or less every day we would mix up who would play with whom, and a few of us had multiple phone lines which made things super interesting! I've actually been to a few LAN parties with some pals up here in Toronto, mostly to play UT and Diablo 2 and stuff like that. Most of my LANning was done in high school, playing SOF2 and Counter-Strike. Those were the days :)

But that time was much better than now, there weren't complete asshole trolling 9 yrs old fucks and such things that are "normal" today. Of course there were some idiots and snowflakes, but we could handle them as they deserved. There were no beaten up teachers, parents were parents, not humiliated slaves. Back-chatting kids were punished, and treated as children. Ok, I went too far... Oh yes, I almost forgot... Boys looked like boys, and girls looked like girls, not the opposite. Sometime in the 90s my friend told me that a friend of his has a book with Doom codes. We wanted us some codes, so we trekked across the town to that friend's house. Being two geniuses, we didn't think to bring a paper to write them down, nor to ask that friend for it. So, we asked for two codes, with the goal that each of us remembers one and we write them down when we get back to my friend's house. So, we went, repeating these strings of letters over and over and over. And that's how I must be the only one whose first thought when hearing "Doom cheats" is not IDDQD nor IDKFA, it's the bloody IDSPISPOPD. Over twenty years later, you could wake me up in the middle of the night and I wouldn't struggle to remember IDSPISPOPD. IDSPISPOPD. Eed, spiss, pop'd.

While you said you'd cover what "degreelessness" meant, you (and John Romero) instead answered what the "DQD" meant. It took me looking it up elsewhere for me to finally get it: For 25 years I thought "degreelessness" was the state of removing "greelessness," whatever that was supposed to be, like "degaussing" a hard drive. Employing the "de-" prefix to what might be a made up word. I feel like an idiot for not getting it sooner, but degreelessness is "the state of not having a degree," which obviously makes sense with the DQD part of the story. So if anyone else watching didn't grasp that, let my fail be your success.

@Scrotumdepoulpe6 жыл бұрын
With an AZERTY keyboard, the "A" replace the "Q". So, when you type "IDDAD", that's like "IDDQD", because DOOM recognize your keyboard as a QWERTY. So, there is'nt any difference. It's like using a QWERTY keyboard, with a game recognizing it as a QWERTY, but with an "AZERTY physical layer" on your keyboard. In fact, in France, when you type "IDDAD", it's like typing "IDDQD". You can easily verify that by saving your game : if you want to name your save "IDDQD" you have to type "IDDAD", 'cause the "A" become a "Q".

2:18 @Codex that is not true and I'll say why. DOS is in no way a part of Windows since 1993 and definitely not since 2001. Let's remember that Windows started as a graphical environment for DOS. In 1993, Microsoft created a new beast called Windows NT, completely independent of DOS. It was mostly intended for the enterprise market and it gradually drew design inspirations from Unix. To make the difference even more obvious, NT was using its own kernel instead of relying on that of DOS like 95, 98 and ME did. The command prompt we see nowadays is just a shell for running Batch commands and that's what it always has been. Nothing more, nothing less. Batch as a shell is implemented in DOS, Wine and Windows. The reason why MS still keeps it around is to support legacy scripts that didn't migrate to PowerShell. The most obvious giveaway of Windows NT not having DOS is the fact you can't run certain DOS software in NT-based versions of Windows, despite Microsoft's best efforts to provide compatibility layers. Best I can think of is SimCity 2000 and Quake. These games are written for DOS with absolutely no memory management in mind, so the NT kernel will rightfully stop them as they will try to access memory that was not provisioned to them by the kernel in a legitimate manner.
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! Other people have brought this to my attention, honestly it was just miscommunication on my part. >>DOS is in no way a part of Windows since 1993 It was up to Windows Millennium. But yes, not in NT based systems.

To further pile on to that, DOS was part of the 9x Windows OSes.. as a built in compatibility layer. the 9x kernel ran the MS-DOS kernel in a VM to handle things it could not, such as MS-DOS drivers, and like wise ran every app in it's own VM container for this cross-support (so say a Windows App could have its System call handled by DOS because it's calling out to a device using a DOS driver)

"DOS itself actually still plays a role in windows today, it's just been renamed to Command Prompt" Nope, contrary to popular belief, DOS and the Command Prompt are not the same thing, the last version of Windows with the DOS Kernel was Windows ME (In which it was combined with the NT Kernel that current Windows OSes use), all current versions of Windows use a different kernel, hence why DOS games require emulation or a source port to run on current Windows versions. DOS is the inspiration for the Windows Command Prompt, but it does not have any role in 64-bit Windows (which most installations today are), and even in 32-bit versions of Windows, a subset of DOS functionality is provided by the NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine, where NT stands for New Technology, for the non-DOS-based Windows versions first released for enterprises in 1993); the last version of Windows to be based on DOS in any way was Windows ME, and its predecessor, Windows 98 SE ("Second Edition" from 1999), is the recommended version for those wishing to play retro PC games un-virtualized. BTW, even though consumer-oriented Windows has not been DOS-based for almost two decades, some programs from old DOS-based Windows still run on recent PCs, because they relied on Windows APIs that are still supported, rather than needing to "drop into DOS" in any way; an important exception is that 16-bit Windows programs will not run on 64-bit Windows, only on 32-bit Windows; I wouldn't recommend using a 32-bit build of modern Windows for un-virtualized retro and modern PC gaming, though, because Windows 98 SE is more compatible with the retro games, and increasingly, modern PC games are 64-bit and therefore require 64-bit Windows.

Based on and based on... It was far more complicated. Dos ran in a virtual machine even back in 3.1. Windows tried to avoid calling into dos code. There are two series of games, that have been installed on my laptop since their release, I've never owned a computer without it being installed. The whole Quake (except for Quake 4, that doesnt count) and Doom series. Almost the same for Unreal / UnrealTournament too.
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
Oh I'll have some fun researching Quake for sure. The transition from traditional cheats to console-activated cheats is something I plan to take a very close look at! (also I agree 4 doesn't count ;) I think I racked up more hours playing the original UT than Quake 1-3 combined!

Why doesn't Quake 4 count? I'm not trying to disagree, I'm just curious.

Hello. I am a 33 old guy, who has played Doom 2 on DOS in my childhood back in the 90s, with PC & Adlib sounds :) so from my memory; this is how we were running it (when there was no Windows yet needed: DIR C: CD GAMES, DIR GAMES, CD DOOM2, DIR DOOM2, DOOM2.EXE :)
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
Nice! My explanation of DOS was largely from my own personal memory, and I admittedly glossed over a few things for the sake of expediency.
@shlomo_19845 жыл бұрын
Same age as you :) dir was just a command to show directory files , if you remember where you put your files you did not have to use it. as a a kid i remember i understood this and i knew all my games directories and executable file.

cmd is NOT Dos...it just looks similar. It's the basic shell of the Windows-NT Systems.
@immikeurnot5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Very much not DOS.
@sp0tt3r5 жыл бұрын
It's not NT either, NT could run DOS commands through a virtual machine, and was limited to 32bit
@tonischumacher25 жыл бұрын
@@sp0tt3r There was a Windows Version called NT. But all systems after that are part of the NT-Line even if they no longer have NT in their product name. Even a modern 64 bit Windows 10 is a Windows NT-System.

This video helped me remember the TV show “Cheat!” On G4 😂. Awesome video! I’m excited for more content. Funny thing is my first video game was Wolfenstein 3D but I didn’t play Doom till I was in high school or college. Definitely one of the best games ever.

Cheat! was a special thing for us kids who were fascinated with the concept of cheat codes, secrets and Eggs, the culture of it all.

If you had used the original Doom (in DOS) while no clipping, you would have seen the Hall Of Mirrors effect which is different under modern source ports. Modern source ports use double-buffering and Doom under DOS used page flipping. It's much more interesting to see in DOS.
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up! I was going to mention the "shimmering" effect, but I'm saving the details of no-clipping for a future episode ;) PS your videos are rad, I don't know how you set up that 3-screen network setup, but gods bless you.

Fascinating video. 👍 A few years ago I met a guy and we went to a bookstore together where a book had the word “berserk” in the title. I told him that reminded me of Doom and he was really shocked and interested in the fact that I played Doom as a kid, and we talked about the game a lot that day. We got married this past spring and had IDKFA engraved inside his wedding band. I had asked him after he proposed if there was a moment he realized he wanted to get married, and he said it was in the book store talking about Doom. Lol 💕

Awww, you didn't mention how they changed the no-clip code in Doom II! Also, it would have been super awesome if you talked about the "cheat" codes in Heretic, if you try to use Doom's cheat codes in that game. It was relevant; it demonstrates part of the legacy that game had. And personally, I always thought of IDKFA as being "ID software Kicks Fat A**." Although it was more as a mnemonic device to remember the code, rather than a hidden meaning.
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
I should have thrown that in for sure, that's my bad! As for Heretic, a video may be on its way sooner than you think ;)

@CarbonRollerCaco5 жыл бұрын
@@marscaleb Konami'd actually beaten Heretic to the cheat code troll party via SNES Gradius III; to enter the Konami Code right in THAT game, you have to replace the left and right pad directions with the L and R buttons or you Mega Crush yourself. Oh, the days when Konami was a good company…
