♻️ The plastic crisis gets a lot of attention as pollution, but the environmental impact of plastic’s life cycle starts long before it ends up in our waterways and ecosystems. Watch our latest animation, The Story of Plastic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4CWhHRqjt54j7c

I often ponder how in place like Canada we remove the straws and plastic bags because of the plastic and its effects on the environment yet then legalize mariijuana and manufacture a ton of plastic containers for the products the government sells and taxes for its people . Disposable I reusable vapes now littering the ground once every. 200 feet or more in some areas

Excellent doco. I have worked in Fiji and know the story behind the bottled water scam there. Sadly the people who live on Fiji have some really poor water supply. Much of the main island can be in severe drought. I'm surprised other countries have not banned Fiji water from being imported. It really should go to the people of Fiji who need a good water source.

only about 12% of Fiji's population does not have a good water supply. This was 2-3 years ago when you wrote this comment. Today those figures have decreased. So please don't say "the people of Fiji don't have a good water supply", because we do! Just get your facts and figures right.

drink some tapwater in Calcutta then. This video only works for places with developed enough water supply and filtration systems to produce potable tap water. Places like US cities, some cities in Europe, and places like Singapore, where bottled water is not necessary, those places should start pushing against bottled water. But bottled water is still necessary. It shouldn't be demonized entirely, and stopping a very convenient water supply. Sure, fund good tapwater systems, but don't try to push too hard to destroy businesses.

When she suggested 'lobby your city officials to bring back drinking fountains' I realised that my 16000 populated town does not have a drinking fountain, and when I asked someone who has been living here for a while why that is they replied that we have not had one in town for around 50 years. He argued that not many people used it when it was around and that still, people will buy bottled water if it was introduced. But after watching this video, I feel so passionate as to want to change this and can't help myself but think there must be a better way. How might one such as myself, only being 17 years of age even begin to fathom tackling this problem, or should I even begin tacking it at all?

I live in Los Angeles and the tap water not only tastes terrible, it turns my toothbrush completely pink within a couple of weeks. When I got a new brush I rinsed it only under the filtered shower water. This still resulted in a bit of pink around the base of the bristles, but I did take much longer. The only water we drink is taken from the shower filter then put through another very strong filter. Despite the terrible quality of tap water in our city we still don't use disposable water bottles. No excuse.

I think they should make the tap water better. Get the fluoride out of it. It's bad for your thyroid. Make it taste better too. The reason people buy bottled is because the tap water tastes bad. I have a brita filter on the faucet but it always gets all messed up and sprays water everywhere. I am gonna start getting Culligan to deliver water because it's such a pain to make my tap water good.

I am very much against bottled water for all of the reasons that you lay out in your video. (Very nice video by the way.) In addition to being against bottled water, I don't like the idea of ingesting all of the contaminants that can be found in tap water. The solution for me is to filter my own water at home and use a reusable bottle whenever I go out. Filtering my own water is more expensive than just drinking it straight from the tap of course, but it is a lot cheaper than buying bottled water. And of course by filtering my own water and using a reusable bottle, I'm not contributing to the massive amounts of pollution caused by billions of plastic bottles ending up in landfills or in the oceans every year.

Alot of generalisations and opinions in this video without substantive backup evidence. Fiji Water is tap water. So is Aquafina and Dasani. Tap water is recycled, chlorinated and fluoridated. If it states "Spring water" then it cannot be chemically treated tap water. Spring water is bottled from the source. This woman needs to do her research on Spring water.

I am anti-plastic. I use mostly glass containers in my home and purchased a reverse osmosis filtration system. Something the video didn't touch base on is the microplastics in the bottled water that occur in the heat or by "friction." I just read an article on the study of micro-plastics in bottled water, and they suggested boiling the water before drinking because the micro-plastic will remain in the pot in the hardened water ring. Microplastic is everywhere even in our bodies of waters because plastic has leached there too. The plastic in the ocean is another concern because the fish eat the plastic and we consume the fish. Additionally, i only purchase glass containers, use reusable bags, never microwave plastic, and purchased large glass gallon jugs to store my filtered water to take with me to work. The big corporations don't care about the impact plastic has on the environment or their consumers health. Sadly recyling plastic is another concern because the chemicals polluting the air and the impact of the employees health. The smell of burned plastic is absolutely unbearable. I hope society will realize there is so much that we can do to improve the environment and health of our future generations.

My classmate and I watched your video which interest and we have some experiences to share from our countries. In Thailand, people prefer to buy bottled water rather than drink water from the tap. Some Thai cities are underdeveloped and do not have the infrastructure to supply clean water. The pipe system is old and often rusty. What’s more, the tap water often has chemicals added. It makes people concerned about the quality of tap water. Many houses have pumps to access water in wells, and use tanks and filters. However, people like to buy bottled water rather than consume tap water because the bottled water in Thailand is very cheap. In China, It depends on people. Some people, especially the youth, prefer to buy bottled water. This is because the price of water is inexpensive so people can afford bottled water whenever they want. Additionally, unlikely in Australia, individuals cannot drink tap water directly in China. However, some enjoy drinking hot water so naturally they use boiled tap water, because compared to bottled water, the price of tap water is cheaper.
@kangboxu2437
@kangboxu2437 9 жыл бұрын
In China, in general, we cannot drink tap water directly because of its low quality. Waterworks don’t disinfect deeply and there are still many bacteria and chemical materials in the water. So, we boil the tap water when we want to get water to drink. By the way, bottle water is more prevalent because of its low price and convenience. Some well-known drink companies produce some special bottled water made from mountain snow, which melts and becomes purified water. However, after I watch the video, I am not sure the special purified water is not from mountain snow, they are just possibly from tap water. So I just prefer to boil water and drink it, it is cleaner and healthier than any bottled water.

I live in the UK, in a country where tap water is completely safe to drink. If you also live there, you know that there's an ever increasing demand for bottled water despite the many alternatives.I understand filtered water solutions such as a Brita can do the job, however you would be impressed by the amount of my friends who still prefer bottled water! And usually those are immigrants or expats who lived in countries where tap water is not safe! They say bottled water is "safer, you know exactly the mineral composition of the water each time, and so it has a great taste". Filtered water should technically enhance the flavor, but it does not recreate premium bottled water, such as Evian or Volvic. Full disclaimer: I do not work for this company. Since I live in London, I came across this startup called "Sküma" claiming to recreate and miniaturize the bottled water process, at home from your tap! This seemed interesting since it limits plastic waste and recreates the same purity, mineral composition and taste as other bottled water. Being an expat myself, I can see this being a viable long-term solution for people with similar background or tap water concerns.

However, I was not aware of the fact that most bottled water contains higher amounts than most tap water. Also, I was unaware that food from supermarkets also contain fluoride WITHOUT having to put it on the label! Thanks for that info.

Tap water is being sabotaged so people move away from it. have you seen the movie Idiocracy? reminds me of what happened in that movie, propaganda made people quit using water except for toilets, and an energy drink company convinced everyone you can use "gatorade" for every practical use that water had. +najurinajuri the only problem with bottled water is the plastics. For this video to make the case Tap tastes better or its the same is a foolish argument...I don't know anyone that just drinks tap water anymore.people are against tap because of taste and potential health problems related to tap. this video is just coming from a very outdated unsupported point of view..and for decades people have been warned not to drink tap when they travel to Mexico. I live in Ohio, and people who I know in Cleveland laugh when they heard that bit about Cleveland in the video..

My father hated the entire concept of bottled water in general! It was one of his major pet peeves. He always called it the "biggest f'n waste of money ever." And I remember how annoyed he used to get whenever my mom went into the store and bought a bottle of water! I really think that she did it just to piss him off sometimes. She knew how he'd react. 😆 But it still makes me laugh to think back on all the times he bitched so much about it. It was always quite funny.

I'm in support of the cause, but the information regarding "oil & energy" fuelling a million cars is misleading, deliberate or not. Crude oil is distilled in a fractional distillation. The crude oil is heated until its component hydrocarbons boil and recondense at different temperatures & heights/exits in the distillation stack. A handful of hydrocarbons are produced in the same distillation, including gasoline & naphthaline. Since it's the same process that produces gasoline for cars, and naphthaline as a precursor for PET, a comparison about "how many cars could be fuelled" is nonsensical and misleading.

Manufactured demand is only a problem if you're susceptible to it. You the consumer should know what you are buying and have your own opinion. This video is informative (I did enjoy the first 26 seconds) but it's as one-sided as the Fuji campaign was and there is a positive case for both, also implying a middle ground or compromise. Talking about water companies as if they were oil companies is disproportionate. Many consumers choose a bottled water for exactly what the product contains, especially when many with the 'mountain' logo do sell the quality product consumers seek, others drinking filtered tap water at mark up prices are perhaps more vulnerable. There is a great deal of work on the science and quality of water and tap water has seen more of a problem to overcome. Quality water for all is a fantastic goal especially in a world where drinking water is in large decline. A water bottle is not inherently evil, like money; it's how it's used. At least the manufacturers use a material that is fully reprocess-able and until plastic has a realistic alternative that does not include GM corn oil, a fully recyclable plastic is one step forward. The problem with the waste is not a bottle company, it's a consumer problem. I'll gladly take every tonne of plastic you can provide and process it through one of the companies our group have setup to remove and reduce plastic waste. We work very hard to clean up the mess others make and dedicate all of our efforts in under developed nations often where the locals themselves couldn't care less. I don't process plastics because I like them, but because I dislike them. Bottles are also infinitely easier to recycle than plastic food trays - down-cycled bottles that end up in landfill, incinerators, construction materials and fibre. A quality bottle could be reused or exchanged for a label price to keep them in the system, the same as food trays however, bottles you will notice are becoming more like thin bags, designed to be cheaper to make and thrown away. I'd encourage people to consider the whole system and not focus on one manufacturer or one company that export the waste using the benefits of 'democracy', a trading system, to do so. There are several core components here and each needs careful consideration. Maintaining a supply of tap water (that is in decline), increasing its quality, expanding the supply as we cannot control our growth, proposing ideas for bottle manufacturers, regulating aspects of the water source and production and of course educating consumers. We are all consumers and finger pointing is less likely to promote objectivity. It's not my opinion that matters, it's not about my business vs. your health, it's our problem. In the very least, send me the plastic, I'll process it myself or as part of a group of companies and donate the proceeds to environmental projects. Finally, since when has taste been the skillset of a consumer? Food Inc. suggests how we buy what we crave, and we crave salt, carbohydrates and fat. How do you suspect a taste test will compare a salad and a cheese burger? Personally I enjoy Fuji water as it has a soft taste and has a higher pH value than most other bottled waters. I also recycle the bottles and don’t consume he filtered tap water brands.

If only we lived in this supposed world. Unfortunately we do not. It is human nature to be persuaded. So the ones that make the desitions on how our cities are ran should not see a destructive consumable as acceptable unless it is one hundred percent reused. That is not a world we live in. So maybe we should stop blaming each other and start actually pointing our fingers at at those that encourage us to waste.

@@mathhuemcmahon I feel like the plastic bottle environmental.problem is a shared responsibility. Not simply finger pointing at each other OR at water bottle manufacturers. And, ten years later, the problem has become more than just the plastic bottle, cost and taste premise of this old video. It's now also more focus on PFAS or I read another commenter raise concerns for plastic micro-molecules, I think. Water is an issue we all need to address, for even more reasons now.

I don’t know who they had doing the “taste testing” as I have never found any tap water that taste good. Unless you filter it with a really good filter it always at least to me has tasted bad sometimes the bleachy taste and smell make it almost unbearable to drink. I do agree the waste is a problem but please don’t tell me that Tap water taste better I’m not buying that at all. And if you purchase “Spring” water and the source is listed this water does not have it’s source from a city tap that would be labeled “purified water” which I avoid.

While I like and agree with this video it does seem to use some disinformation, and should be careful that people don't use that fact to discredit the ideas behind the video. First I have been involved in plastic production, and it is wrong to think we can recycle something back into what it was over and over. The reality is that every time plastic is melted down and recycled it is more brittle, and so using it to make lower quality products just makes sense. Often things are made as a mixture of virgin and recycled plastic, and not just recycled materials. To a lesser degree I would also point out that it is a little dishonest to talk about the production of all of a product, and then compare it to one person using one of the product, when considering the efficiency, or lack there of. It may have only been to make the point hit home, but I could easily see people twisting this into thinking the video itself is wrong.

Jonathan Swaringen You don't "believe" in fluoride? Fluoride is a natural element that exists in nature. The maximum safe daily consumption of fluoride is 10 mg for an adult, and there is less than 0.2 mg per cup of fluoridated water. You would need to drink 50 cups of water a day for it to become dangerous, and the recommended amount is around 12 cups. You're fine.

RoxyLuffer Haha, it's just crazy when people boycott something they don't have full understanding of. It's not some insane synthetic substance, it's fully natural and completely safe if you keep track of your intake. It's the same idea with potassium. People say that those eating large amounts of bananas will die of potassium poisoning. For it to be lethal, you'd need to eat roughly 2500 mg per 2 lbs of body weight in 30 seconds. So for a 140 lb person, that's 350000 mg, or 700 bananas. (This obviously varies from person to person due to health, age, etc., but you get the idea) People freak out over the littlest of things. Everything in this world can kill you, but everything also has its limits.
