BBC One Show interviews Gerry Marsden of Gerry & The Pacemakers fame on birth of the song.
Gerry Marsden was born Sep 1942
After a heart operation in 2016 announced retirement in Nov 2018.
He died 3 Jan 2021 in Merseyside.

To all you young people out there: Gerry was young and handsome once, but he got old like we all do if we are lucky. Be nice to your elders for you will be wearing their shoes one day.

So sad to hear of his passing....Ferry cross the Mersey certainly one of the most beautiful songs ever....R.I.P. Gerry

That! is beautiful. Mr Marsden has never seemed "up himself". Just one of the lovely blokes, the nice fellas, we as a nation, used to have.

Another song that will stand the test of time. And thank you SO MUCH posting this backstory. Most of us here in the states had no idea Gerry re released it to charity. Bravo!
