Met Henry Rono in 97, in WSU, when he was inducted into Hall of Fame. I went with my agent Yaako Tuominen, a Finn. We had to pick him up from the airport the before. Henry Rono, who was my hero as a legend runner, was drunk and barely could walk !!! We drove him to the hotel and he passed out. When we woke him the next day for the big day of induction. I sat with him at the platform for his acceptance speech. Henry Rono had such a hangover that he was sweating profusely. He was embarrassed he asked me to speak on his behalf. Rono stood up and barely spoke. And just sat down. I hugged him and he missed to see the tears in my eyes. I was sad for him!!! Pombe ? The killer of our Kenyans and Kenyan runners. Many many stories. Asante

This story reasonates with that of my aunt ..her name is Everline Kemunto Kimwei. She was a Kenyan long-distance runner. Her greatest achievement was a team gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships, where she was sixth. She was a joint-holder of the African record for the ekiden marathon relay, courtesy of her winning run for Kenya at the 2006 Chiba Ekiden. She did so many other races. But right now she is in the Village..things ain't going so well for her. She was our hero but the 'Drink' messed her marathon life. I wish something could have been done to help her..we were too young to know what her issue was back then. I would really wish to see her back on her feet ..she is super talented. Tulienda ushago Mimi humwona akipiga tizi..and I always feel happy... I am proud to say I met Catherine Ndereba for the first time courtesy of her. ❤❤ Much love auntie

This is an incredible story of one of our heroes. It's sad to hear that the majority of them suffer from mental health. I think the first order of business is to have them undergo mental wellness and be assigned to a therapist. Kumbuka these are guys who are taught from childhood that being tough and showing no emotions is being a 'man'. @Mkuru, don't you think people like Eliud Kipchoge na Wilfred Bungei should be at the forefront of educating the upcoming athletes on mental stability and the effects of drinking? Or even having the know-how to separate situations. At the training school (if there is any) in Iten, there should be a compulsory class on financial literacy and on investment & business management. It's really sad to hear and see our heroes languishing in poverty after all the glorious years. Most retire not because they've come of retirement age but because of alcoholism. This is so sad. Something must be done about this!
