I'd imagine Joseph lost quite a bit of business considering his circumstances and the way people would have perceived him in the eyes of the law. No one would have wanted to hire him because of the perceived "transgressions" of Mary. This would have contributed to the humble beginnings of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the surface, the bible stories seem simple but you really have to contemplate their depth to understand the true meaning of the Lord's sacrifice and how blessed we are to receive them.

You forgot to mention that Joseph and Mary were chosen because both are direct descendants of David. The book of Matthew documents Joseph's lineage while Luke documents Mary's lineage. This is very important because our Savior needed to be David's direct descendant in order to sit on his royal throne. While Joseph is from the royal lineage, though cursed, Mary is a descendant from a different son of David, which does not carry the curse. Being the Son of David through both parents, however, allows Yeshua Ben Elohim to sit on David's throne. Let us remember that Yeshua HaMashiach does not carry the cursed blood of the royal lineage since he is not a bilogical son of Joseph--He is his Son through adoption. Moreover, Yeshua carries David's bilogical blood through Mary's uncursed lineage.

I learn so much from your videos. Most surprised to hear you say Joseph was probably young. I have always heard the theories otherwise. Either way, still a great lesson.
@messagesofChrist5 жыл бұрын
According to Jewish tradition, a man would be married at the age of around 17-20, so this would be the likely age of Joseph. The reason he is often portrayed as older is because the Gospels say that there were other children in the family, and the Catholic church has wanted Mary to remain a "virgin" her entire life, so they had the children belong to a previous marriage of Joseph. The problem, there is no historical evidence for this in the text, and it clearly states in Matthew 1:25 when speaking of Joseph and Mary "But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus." In other words, Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born, but once he was born (probably a few months later because of her being unclean according to the Law of Moses) the marriage was then consummated, meaning she no longer was a virgin. Simply put, the only reason Joseph is depicted as an old man is to make Mary a virgin, but the Bible simply does not say this. Glad you have enjoyed the videos!
@kathryncarter61435 жыл бұрын
@@messagesofChrist makes sense. I always thought he was older though because once married, he'd have the major task of supporting his wife & child. Maybe things were different then, but was teen to you know that can take care if a family. I know it's been done, just seems quite the challenge. Plus, at that peak age, wouldn't someone expect to "draft" him into the local army so to speak?

i read in many books from theologians and historians and others , meaning different sources but the same fact that Joseph was much older than Mary , and that explains that he died way before Lord Jesus started His ministry, but you said he was very young , so just wondering where i can fin this information that Joseph was that age or any age , thanks for the answer if anybody can reply to me , this is not criticism just wanting to know more , in all respect i am just thirty for the knowledge about everything in the Bible
@messagesofChrist4 жыл бұрын
Violetta, excellent question. So The Bible does not give us any information about Joseph's age. The tradition that Joseph was older only shows up in written documents about 200 years later, so it has a late date of authorship. The reason for this tradition was to keep Mary a virgin, so Joseph was made to be older and the other "children" that are mentioned in the New Testament are said to be from a previous marriage of Joseph. The problem is again, there is zero evidence for this in the scriptures. None. In fact, the evidence points the other way. According to Matthew 1:25 it states: "But he [Joseph] did not consummate their marriage [with Mary] until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus." This clearly states that Mary was only a virgin until after Jesus was born. This would mean that the traditions of Mary always being a virgin are just not founded in scripture. So, if this is the case, and there is no evidence that Joseph was old or had already been married once before, then according to Jewish tradition (and there are quite a few sources that talk about this) men married at a young age of around 17-20ish. This younger age was for several reasons. Children were your "retirement fund" so to speak. With no Social Security you wanted to have grown children by the time you were older. And keep in mind, the life expectancy was around 40-50 (I don't recall the exact age). This would mean that even if Joseph was 20 when Jesus was born, and Jesus was 33 when he died, then Joseph would have been in his early 50s, which in this time, was old. So the fact that Joseph does not show up in scripture (most likely meaning he has died) is not unexpected for his age. There is also the issue of a high death rate for children, which is another reason to marry young and have lots of kids. If they will support you in your age, and (sadly) around half will die before they become an adult, then you need to start young. So, in short, the old age of Joseph is only based on a tradition to make Mary a perpetual virgin, which the scriptures just don't support. So if it was a normal marriage (which the scriptures don't give any other reason to believe it was not) then Joseph would be young. As a note, in the description of all my videos, I leave a link to the full text with footnotes and additional sources. You might find some of those helpful if you want to dig deaper. Hope that helps!

The Bible never mentions his age, so we have to look at ancient practices. I'll include this footnote I added to another script on Mary, which covers the same topic: As there always is a debate on the age of Mary, here are a few notes regarding the age of betrothal for women in the Bible. The Midrash and Talmud both state that young men were married by the age of eighteen and girls by the time they were thirteen (Midrash, Aboth 5:21 and Talmud, Pesachim 113). "For the other parameter, age at marriage, no real statistics exist for ancient Israel.... In Egypt, girls were married between twelve and fourteen; boys, between fourteen and twenty." (Life in Biblical Israel, page 37). "The consent (betrothal), usually entered into when the girl was between twelve and thirteen years old" (The Birth of the Messiah by Raymond E. Brown, page 123). "The earliest age for marriage, which typically follows betrothal by a year, is twelve years and a day [meaning betrothal could be at the age of 11]." (BYU New Testament Commentary, The Testimony of Luke by S. Kent Brown, page 107). "According to ancient Jewish custom, Mary could have been betrothed at about 12." (Wikipedia, Mary, mother of Jesus)

Joseph was not an old guy but he was not old either. In the Gospel of the Nativity, of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Joseph had a wife who passed giving birth. It goes on to say how he was selected to care for Our Blessed Mother and why he is depicted with with a staff of blooming lilies. It also mentions the other children with the wife he had which, for me, answers the question of Jesus' "brothers and sisters" and of St. James the Greater. I know people will scoff but it doesn't change the Gospel message. It does, however, give some light to some questions. And remember, it is mentioned in Revelations that, "not everything could be written". What was chosen about Joseph is only that part that had direct association with our young Lord. The rest is detail. I do praise Joseph as a man of our times. A good husband and father overwhelmed knowing who Jesus is, teaching the boy Jesus, and raising someone else's child.

I thought that Judean men typically married around 30 (with a woman around her mid teen years). I'm not saying that Joe couldn't have been young, but I read that Palestinian men typically around 30 to a women 10-15 years younger. I'm so confused.
@messagesofChrist7 жыл бұрын
No, 30 was the age you could become a rabbi or leader, and if you were not married and had children by that time, you would not be considered (at least in particular for the marriage part). Life expectancy was around 45-55 for someone who had survived the first ten years of life, so starting a family at 30 would just not make sense. Starting at 30 would mean you would likely not even see some of your children grow past the teen years, and you would never know most of your grandchildren (as your sons would not marry till 30, which means you would be at least 60 before having grandchildren). Average age for marriage of a woman was around puberty, so around 12-14ish. Could be a few years later, but this would be pretty close. Again, because of shorter lives, you wanted to start your family as early as possible. You would lose many of your children, so starting young allowed you to have as many as possible (as children where in essence your retirement, which is another reason you would not start late, as you would want your children earning a living by the time you get old so they can support you). Hope that helps.

Nope. She was when Jesus was born, this is very clear in scripture. But the scriptures are also very clear that she and Joseph had marital relations once Jesus was born (see Matthew 1:25) and that they also had other children (which is mentioned around 6-8 times).
@michaelbaroud82004 жыл бұрын
Messages of Christ where is this in the bible?
@messagesofChrist4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbaroud8200 Matthew 1:25 mentions that Joseph and Mary had marital relations after Jesus was born. Mark 6:3; 3:31-32; Matthew 13:55-56; John 7:3 just to name a few. Many try to avoid these by saying they are children of Joseph from a previous marriage, but the Bible gives zero evidence for this. It also does not address the simple fact that Matthew 1:25 clearly says that Joseph and Mary had relations after the birth of Jesus. Some also say that the word "brother" could also mean cousin, or brother in the church, the problem is the Greek does not imply either. And John 7:3 is an example of the "brothers" not believing Jesus. To say the term refers to "brothers in the Gospel, or believers of Jesus" would mean that this verse could not be true, or it just means that Jesus' half brothers (children of Mary and Joseph) did not believe.

@Mike H Why should we not assume that they did not have sexual relations? I guess my question is where in scripture does it state she was a perpetual virgin and that their marriage was different than all others? You say I am reading into the story, but I would say you are far more than I am. I would love just one Jewish source that says that a marriage did not need to be consummated, or that it was normal even for some (priests, levites, anyone) to not have sexual relations. Otherwise, you are taking a story that any Jew would understand as having relations and putting a later tradition. So again, where can you prove your point that Mary was a perpetual virgin and that the other "brothers" are NOT Mary's children? You don't want me to assume, but you are.
@messagesofChrist4 жыл бұрын
@Mike H I asked for a Jewish source that says that people did not need to consummate the marriage after betrothal. Not a Christian one. The problem I see with your sources is these were much later. Yes, I believe in modern revelation, but they also need to square with the scriptures. Matthew 1:25 to me is very clear. Yes, I've heard the "until" could be like "God be with you until we meet again" but even this phrase means God will be with you until AND before we meet again. So by this logic Mary and Joseph had sexual relations before and after, which just is not true because we know she was a virgin according to scriptures when Jesus was born. I respect others beliefs that Mary was a perpetual virgin, but I also ask for the same respect, as it is based in scripture. And as for the brothers and sisters, to me "cousins" just don't fit the text. Families were huge back then (you had many children) so you would have far more than four brothers (or cousins as you want to call them). If it were cousins, I would expect many more listed, not just four. Just as an example, I have a large family on my mom's side and I have 40 cousins. Why would I only name four of them every time? Yes, I might have favorite cousins, but the fact that the story always names the same names to me is a dead give away. And then the simple fact remains, that just for example the Greek work ἀδελφοὶ for brother in Matthew 13:55 either means brother or a member of the same religious group. So cousin is not an option according to the original Greek. Is it possible then this is a "brother" as in a member of the religious group? To me I would say no because again, why only refer to brothers of Jesus as the same individuals all through the text? Why not brother Peter, or brother Andrew, or even sister Mary? Why always the same four brothers if it is just cousins or religious "brothers"? And then for me the other one is John 7:3 where the same Greek word is used, except it says his brothers did not believe in his words. That is strange that a "brother" in the gospel does not believe in Jesus? Would that not mean they are not a "brother" in the gospel? So that only leaves room for an actual brother, not a cousin (which again is not in the original Greek). You can see the Greek Lexicon here with the wording: biblehub.com/john/7-3.htm

You say we know , we know but you don’t say the source of your knowing Joseph was not young he was a very elderly man when it fell upon him in a supernatural way to become the guardian of Mary who was only 12 when the temple elders called on Joseph to take her in.... Mary remained a virgin thru her entire life Joseph already had 6 children from his previous marriage 4 boys and 2 girls.... Joseph was 90 years of age when Mary was 12... Joseph lived to be 111 years old this comes from the infancy gospels of Jesus

Joseph was not 17 or an old man, he was at least 25. 17 was still considered young and living with parents(John and James). John did not have a house, he took Mary to his parents' house.

Joseph from the tribe of Judah how is he Caucasian
@raebeia4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Clayton In most “classical” paintings, all Bible people are Caucasian except the Good Samaritan.(black). Even the classic Catholic/Protestant portrait of Jesus was actually modeled by a white prisoner because the artist felt “the. man looked like what Jesus would look like”. Man has never seen God, yet he is portrayed as an old, bearded man.🤷🏻♀️
