Go to Joseph - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, we come to the wonderful Feast of the Holy Family. Over the years on this feast day, I’ve certainly preached on the dynamics of the Holy Family, on Mary, and of course on the Lord, but I don't think I’ve ever focused on St. Joseph. Well, that ends today. Let’s look at four dimensions to the holiness of this greatest male saint in the history of the Church.

I'm a relatively new convert (1 1/2 years) to the Church. I've never understood the place of St. Joseph as I do now, and it is such a blessing. As I learn more and more, and still often feel lost, I will turn to St. Joseph to help me find my way. Learning to lean on our mother Mary has been such a blessing. Having her husband as protector will help my heart feel closer to our Lord in this incredibly dangerous and confused world.

I love St Joseph to death. I pray to him every morning and evening. And I see the importance in silence. But I also think too much silence is a bad thing. Watching this on NYE at 11.45pm and as is often the case at this time of year, feeling alone and assailed by despair. But then with each minute of this wonderful video, I felt God's spirit telling me to listen and believe. And just before the moment that +Barron spoke of his favourite title for St Joseph, the thought came to me: pray the Terror of Demons prayer. And with that I received my confirmation. Thank you Bishop Barron. Thank you St Joseph and of course thank You God for giving us the angels and saints to be our constant help in this battle. And Happy New Year to anyone who reads this. And know - as I am reminded once again now - that you are NEVER alone however dark the night may seem. St Joseph, Terror of Demons cast your solemn gaze upon the devil and all his minions, and protect us with your mighty staff. You fled through the night to avoid the devil’s wicked designs, now with the power of God, smite the demons as they flee from you. Grant special protection, we pray, for children, fathers, families and the dying. By God’s grace, no demon dare approach while you are near. So we beg of you, always be near us. Amen!!

I have been praying to St. Joseph for a long time because he has the virtues that this world lacks...obedience and humility. He did everything God told him to do and at the same time, so humble that nothing much was said about him...if that is not obedience and humility at the highest level, I don't know what is! ST. St Joseph’s ordinary private life with Jesus and the Blessed Mother was silent in the scriptures, but it is most illustrative. He was a craftsman, a carpenter, a teacher of Jesus and a role model, a provider. Everyday was a demonstration of holiness… sanctification of Joseph’s ordinary work and his attention to details. The silent example of St. Joseph in the Gospel of St. Matthew speaks volumes and gives us so much to consider, especially given what he did in the challenging circumstances of the ancient world. Perhaps his lack of words is an indication of how powerful his dreams are. It's masterful to think that the Body of Christ, the Word Made Flesh, was entrusted to him just as the mystical Body of Christ, the Church, continues to be under his care, giving us a great example of how to be a protector. You flushed up this quote from Middlemarch, excuse its secular origins: "The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs." IMHO, with the exception of those with personality disosrders who demand recognition, deserved or not, most of us serve in the above role. Likely we will die with little or no ceremony, perhaps not even a funeral. Your recommendation of prayer -- to Joseph -- perhaps will help us in a resentment-free service and obedience. Be well.
