Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon despite being attacked by the race director who tried to physically pull her out of the race because she was a woman. Switzer remembers the famous day and explains how it revolutionised women’s running around the world.

WOW. Sitting here gearing up to train for my second marathon... Can't believe there was a time when that wasn't even allowed. Man. What this woman did for the lives of people like me who weren't even born yet... I feel so much gratitude

that’s just common history. most people know women used to not be able to do stuff like this.

Roberta Gibb was the first woman to run the marathon so the title of this video is misleading. Roberta hid in a hedge and joined the race once it started. She ran it an hour quicker than this woman. Brave women the pair of them.

The title should match your description: she was the first woman to OFFICIALLY run the Boston Marathon. However, the first woman to ever run the Boston Marathon was Bobbi Gibb, who ran the race a full hour faster than Switzer. Bobbi was a pioneer in women’s athletics; let’s not erase her or discount her because she didn’t run with a number.

I agree. Roberta Gibb was a pioneer. And she was much faster, by the way.

She would have run it even faster but her new addidas running shoes gave her terrible blisters. She ran before that in nurses shoes 😁 Legend.

Gibbs story of the men being supportive doesn't fit the narrative of dividing men and women. Everything is controlled and pushed for a reason, and the reasons are rarely benevolent.

Great personality, great story. It's quite shocking how ignorant the mainstream culture used to be in the mid 1960s. Learnings: Just keep running forward. And bodycheck the idiots on your way as they are trying to slow you down!

We don’t normally think of women’s fight for equality during the civil rights era movement, but here it is. Normally we only images from that era are of women screaming hysterically as the Beetles disembark a plane. Good to see another side.

The treatment of female athletes is not as bad as this, but still not great. And I'm not even talking about pay, female athletes are demonized just for being female athletes(cue comments on any female related video on sky) . Thank you sky for helping to elevate and showcase womens sport and thank you to the brave women like Switzer who have competed and continue despite the environment. Hopefully, life will improve for female athletes every generation

And THIS is precisely why 'transwomen' should not be allowed to compete in women's sport - namely because actual women fought hard to get to where they are.

Amen. And it’s time for us to cancel the feminists, Democrats, & athletes like Megan Rapinoe who are trying to take sports away from girls & women in the future. Now that she’s retired she’ll gladly help the misogynists & narcissists destroy female sports so she can virtue signal to the woke idiots who are in power. That’s an absolutely unforgivable stance she’s taken.

@@Blake_1 you've been tricked by propaganda to think this is a big deal. They're probably less than 50 trans athletes in the whole of the United States. Trans people were a tiny minority of the United States but because of conservative media they are made out to be this big bad boogyman. I will agree with you in some sense there is a conversation to be had about trans people in sports but most people who bring this up don't want to have this conversation. They just want to find another way to attack trans people.

It’s obvious you didn’t do your research. At the time, there were no women’s events in the marathon; the first all female marathon wasn’t held until the mid-1970s in Germany, and women could not compete in the Olympics in the marathon distance until 1984.
