Mountain Dew, a popular citrus-flavored soft drink, was originally created in the 1940s by Barney and Ally Hartman, two beverage bottlers in Tennessee, as a mixer for whiskey. Named after a colloquial term for moonshine, the drink was reformulated in 1958 by Bill Bridgforth, resulting in the flavor profile closer to the modern version. The rights to Mountain Dew were later acquired by the Tip Corporation, which further refined the formula and design. In 1964, Pepsi-Cola bought the brand, leading to its nationwide distribution and subsequent variations, such as Diet Mountain Dew and Code Red. Known for its high caffeine content and energetic marketing, Mountain Dew has become a staple in the soft drink market, particularly popular among younger consumers and in gaming culture.

I used to be part of a morning show at a radio station near Cleveland, OH in the late 90s and early 00s. In order for me to be live (and awake) in front of the microphone at 6am I had to be highly caffeinated; I'd wake up at 4am go to the fridge and open a 2 liter of Mountain Dew and immediately started drinking it. I'd turn on the shower, wait for it to warm up, drink some more. Got in the shower and drank some more. By the time I was ready to go live that bottle HAD to be empty or I wasn't wired enough to be entertaining. Luckily I kicked that habit and now my caffeine consumption is reduced to 32oz of unsweetened tea a day. I miss radio but I don't miss the small paychecks from it. ;)

Chris, I couldn’t imagine drinking soda first thing in the morning:) Believe it or not, I used to also work as a morning radio host for about 3 years and also had to wake up at 4AM! I’m not a morning person at all so I always felt very unwell, soda would have probably made me completely sick at that hour!

I had never heard of anyone getting addicted to Mountain Dew before seeing your video. I looked up how its caffeine content stacks up against other popular beverages, and while it is high for a soft drink, other drinks have more, notably coffee. But then, I don't know anybody who quaffs regular coffee by the liter, much less 12+ liters per day. Most people who go out of their way to stay hydrated don't drink 12+ liters of plain ol' water every day! So, yeah, sounds like caffeine addiction, coupled with a strong psychological addiction to the sugar and the taste in general when one consumes it in such quantities. When I was growing up (mid 1960s-early '80s), I never saw Mountain Dew outside of a translucent green bottle or an opaque can. Then I got to college, where the cafeteria dispensed soft drinks from tap machines into clear glasses or white styrofoam disposable cups, and I did a double-take when I saw what Mountain Dew actually looked like -- a sickening (to me) radioactive yellow-green. I fully expected that if the lights all went out, it would glow in the dark. No wonder the stuff was always sold in colored bottles or opaque cans! I've never much cared for soda in general, and had never found Mountain Dew to be all that tasty before, but I don't think I've touched a drop of it ever since seeing it out in the open.

This is a pretty informative video. I would drink 1-2 Diet Mtn Dews a day before my girlfriend introduced me to coffee. I still drink a Dew every now and then. A guy I would play COD with from Tennessee was on 3-6 cans a day!

Because I am diabetic, I had to stop drinking Mtn Dew. I changed to Dr Pepper. That didn't last because Dr Pepper has more sugar and caffeine than Mtn Dew. Then I discovered Sugar Free Dr Pepper. Now this is not Diet soda. Sugar Free uses a different sweetener. I can't tolerate the standard Diet sweetener. Now I limit myself to 3 cans a day. Anymore than that, and I can't sleep. Still can get buzzed on Dr Pepper. 😊

I'm not addicted to Mtn Dew, just cause i have drank it for 4 decades and switched to drinking diet to get out of the sugar and have 6 cases of Baja Blast diet doesnt mean I am addicted, I can stop whenever I want, I just dont want to.

I started my morning with a dew every morning while in college. I went cold turkey when I moved away from the vending machine. I had the worse headache for 2 weeks, but I lost about 10lbs. Still love the Dew, but only on special occasions, not just days that end in Y.

I WAS shockingly caught up with MD and was drinking it consistently for years. I have since stopped drinking it entirely and when I do today i find that it tastes ridiculously horrible. The same happened to me with Big macs - They are absolutely disgusting today but in my childhood I could not get enough.

I was drinking at least 1 64oz cup of Dew a day many years back. Now I'm missing 6 teeth with more rotting. Dentist said it was most likely due to my Dew addiction. I switched to black coffee for caffeine and cut way back on sugar. I still grab the new flavors to try them, but beyond that I have too stay away from the Dew. Can't eat a crunchy taco anymore... F-U DEW! (FYI Dentist said to "chug your soda, don't sip it for hours". Chug it and brush your teeth. Much less corrosive to your teeth that way.)

Anecdotal evidence is better reserved for the end of a specific argument, like a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae. As the basis of an argument, anecdotal evidence is a logical fallacy -- no one wants to eat a bowl full of maraschino cherries (and if they do, they'll soon regret it). Dr Gary Wenk, professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at Ohio State University, has some interesting things to say about soda-pop and its addictive qualities. It's not just Mountain Dew, it's most of the carbonated sweetened beverages.

Of course the problem of rotting teeth in the South could also be due to that other beverage of choice...sweet tea.

I kicked the dew habit, I had to slowly ween myself off it. Liter or 6 pack a day. Kidney stones was my wake up call. Got down to 2 cans a day and only if I’m working. I eventually pivoted to iced tea to replace my caffeine intake. The Mountain Dew mouth probably has more to do with personal hygiene habits which are exacerbated by the soda. I live in Vegas where the energy drink habit is every bit as worse. But a good smile is all a part of the hospitality industry, so not a lot of messed up teeth. Plenty of Dew addicts here, but I don’t see that affliction. MGM casinos carry Pepsi, so the employees has free rein on the soda fountains. Dew is extremely popular, since it save ppl from buying energy drinks.
