Nico Nico Douga (although much more popular in Japan) is also an old social media site that was a huge hit back then, Touhou wouldn't become a cult classic if it weren't for the reuploads to KZbin. The reuploads even helped globalize some popular memes like Gachimuchi and Ran Ran Ruu. Nowadays became mostly barren due to KZbin taking its place, and its English division got its plug pulled around the late 2010s. Still, it (alongside 4chan, which was originally an anime-focused website before it became the wild controversial site that it eventually morphed into) helped open the cultural floodgate between Japanese and western users.

In 4chan's original culture, racism, amongst an infinite number of other things is hilarious. Also 4chan was always controversial and has a long history of getting shat on and misunderstood both unintentionally and intentionally with the media If you'd like to see some pages on 4chan history, visit bibanon maybe even stop by their chat for related or more specific stuff. Also 4chan was very, very, very, close to Encyclopedia Dramatica Early 4chan and ED more or less literally had the same userbase as 4chan took it over immediately. @@SirBlackReedsEhh, not really. Reddit was formed by users of Digg, yet another social media kind of service that I'm surprised isn't talked about in this video. The similarities come from subreddits. Like how 4Chan has different image boards Reddit has different subreddits. Reddit was pretty decent up until 2016 or so IMO. That is also when the mobile app launched so you can probably guess what happened. Though I guess a lot of places became incredibly toxic in 2016 and not just reddit. Reddit isn't really that bad when you find a smaller subreddit focused on specific topics however the larger public subreddits are shit. Regarding Twitter's customization, it's funny how the site back at the beginning allowed you to set a custom background image and all, let you have animated GIFs for profile pic (those who haven't changed it since then still get to keep one), and even recently it allowed you at least to freely choose what color to show the interactive parts on your account (buttons, links, etc..., those which are now stuck to light blue). A similar argument could also be made about KZbin channels too. I guess the deprivation of customization options is something that has hit every social media from the late 2010s onwards, really.

Vine is still so fascinating to me on a very different level. I'm an internet addict and by 2013 I spent a lot of my spare time on 4chan and other le funny sites, but a few years later I heard: Dude, Vine got shut down. And I was like: What the heck is vine? Maybe it wasn't a big thing here in Europe, but I only heard about this platform after it was gone and when all those videos got "migrated" to KZbin and Twitter. And of course when musicaly and then TikTok went off. But also: I was never that familiar with mobile social media apps and got my first smartphone in 2016. I guess that might explain my ignorance.

Sure, I had an account on newgrounds, but I rarely commented, I was just watching and playing flash stuff and browsing the newgrounds audio portal and was completely content with what I had. As an old G+ user, I think the biggest thing keeping the site afloat were fandoms and roleplayers. I used to roleplay a lot with people on that site during middle and high school, and how everyone had banded together on the last day of G+ to celebrate and mourn. I remember too that users in the RP community went to other sites like MeWe after G+ died, purely because they allowed NSFW content when G+ pulled a Tumblr and stopped allowing NSFW content.

Anyway, I hate how every username ever is taken, captcha's are equivalent to an SAT test, I need 20 letters and special characters for accounts, forums have been pushed out by subreddits and discord servers, literally EVERYTHING on the internet gets shared everywhere, and the fact that the internet is an extension of the real world rather than being an escape. Also 4chan is 21 years old now, which is insane to me. Summer kids used to get banned for not being old enough. But there were people who hadn't been born yet, that are now old enough to post.

I'm like this grandparent who tells little Timmy "I remember the time Skype, Gaia Online, Neogaf, and Miiverse in my younger days."(the last one I actually used whilst an impressionable child, never heard of the thirdly mentioned until now, nor have been on the former two at all), the internet aged prominently to the point where Vine, Google+, and MySpace were treated as relics of the past. I know some users on Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, and KZbin who still use Tumblr, but the SJWs and toxic fanbases to good shows(e.g. Steven Universe, Voltron Legendary Defender, Rick and Morty, Twilight, Supernatural, Tumblr Sexymen, Undertale, MLP:FIM, et cetera) are what severely damaged Tumblr's reputation. MySpace was influential to underground movements such as emo, scene, and goth, to the point where it was satirized for them entirely, and iconic music videos from the likes of Michael Jackson's Thriller gained more than a million likes for being the best and most important of all. And it seems Elon Musk is considering bringing back Vine and MySpace from the grave, so I salute him for that!
