Hey there! I'm The Shades, and I was one of the Co-Founders of Reviewtopia.I just saw this video, thanks to a friend of mine, who pointed it out to me. I'll give you credit, your look at our old site is roughly on point. Bonus points for getting the name of our old Robot Mascot. You did your homework here. We tried to tell ourselves we were not gonna be a Channel Awesome Clone, but at the end of the day, we totally were. Most of what you said, harsh as it was, wasn't wrong. We had big ideas for what we wanted to do, specifically in regards to fan involvement, but little of it came to fruition, so it ended up being exactly as you put it. I'm only gonna make one correction: we did not "pass up" on PBG/Jontron when forming Reviewtopia. The truth is, they worked with us on The Geek Fighters for a short time. But just as we were in early talks about making the site, they decided to leave on their own. I believe they were working on forming Normal Boots around that time. That said, I still regret having Retrogamer3 in our group. I didn't like his work to begin with (someone else had brought him in), and when he suggested "That" show you mentioned, I flat out hated it. He also tried to host Pirated Games on his personal website, which Insisted he stop, since I knew that was a legal nightmare to be associated with. We soon removed him from the site after that. There is still some semblance of the crew together in what is now called RVT, but we long abandoned what we used to be. All I can say is: the fact that anyone even talks about us now is a miracle.A lot of lessons were learned from that, that's for sure.

To be fair, I like how the guy with the wolf puppet does its voice in post as opposed to doing actual ventriloquism so it looks more like it's alive/talking. It's tiny details like that, even for something that has very little value (if any), gives it a sense of charm to it all.

The thing about nostalgia critic acting cartoony is he actually knows how to do it relatively well. He plays himself as the butt of the joke, his anger is always (INTENTIONALLY) absurd to the point where you can laugh at him. He literally took classes to learn how to act cartoonishly. I feel like once the Mr. Plinkett reviews dropped, the next influential wave came down completely washing away the nostalgia critic copycats, I guess you could say those are still going but you can't deny that the Plinkett review format is what's popular to this day, and it's the format that gave rise to video essays and feature-length movie reviews that are longer than the movie they're reviewing, and even then those are still better than the rise of pngtubers, most of whom probably don't even know it started with sequelitis.

I don't dislike everything Doug does nowadays, but totally agree with you: the first half of his career were amazingly entertaining.
