Joshuajlawn I would agree with you. The Spitfire was a light weight low fuel capacity intercepter where as the P51 Mustang was 2,000 # heavier and carried much more fuel. it was a long range escort fighter. Two different roles for two different planes. Each plane gave up something to accomplish their goal. Each was a GREAT plane.

wxmanwill They actually did some tests of the Merlin in P38's but even the 2stg supercharged Merlin gave very little performance gain over the Turosupercharged Allisons used in P38's. So the Merlins were allocated to the P51 Mustang.

This sounds like double talk. Why would you allocate the Merlin to the P51 if there was no defense between it and the Allison? The P51 was a better plane than the P38?

The Me 262 was an amazing design but suffered from engine reliabity problems due to the fact that at that late stage of the war the German's access to quality raw materials to make the engines from was strictly limited,the engines had to be replaced and overhauled every 10 hours of runtime,jet fuel was also in very short supply..
