I was at an age that The begining of Pearl Jam was the begining for me. Pearl Jam is the one relationship in my life that will always remain, people come people go but their musical relationship with me will forever be, never changed, never lost.

Eirc Thompson I don't like Eddie singing Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns. Other than that, he's next to Andrew, Layne, and Chris as far as vocals. I never really liked Kurt Cobain's vocals, but I never hated them either. I try to respect all music, except for the ridiculous such as today's noise.

Eirc Thompson yes.... his water on the road concert ...soundtracks for various movies.....his incredible covers like " masters of war" here on yt with only him and mcready....and g.e smith from 92....still doin that song and well but that one my favorite. i love dylan but that song made for eds voice....it needs a deeper voice and to be slowed down from bobs version have a deeper impact....eddies the man!

Besides all that: I'm a fan, and I love "Ten." I cherish "Ten." I think it's because the album is not only full of a lot of great songs with an array of...I dunno..."vibes" to them? As in: it's not musically or thematically redundant. Plus, like a great many "Gen X" geezers, I associate "Ten" with a very interesting time in my life.

@@dalssu4740 do you know Eddie’s ‘historia’ interview? He says there that he was glad audiences had reinterpreted his lyrics to be celebratory rather than sad recounting of Eddie’s father shocking him, so audiences had “lifted the curse” Eddie felt everytime he sang the song. Also, Radiohead is famous for being at peace with the fact that they’re always making songs with very obscure or random intentions that manage to have totally different effects once the masses hear the songs. I think more artists should have that approach.

Pearl jam was born out of the original roots of grunge. Mother love bone was the foundation of the grunge era. Pearl jam is still here 30 plus years later because they've evolved over the years and never feared experimenting with their sound and music. Over 85 million albums later 11 studio albums 15 live albums touring nearly endlessly and they still stand the test of time. The grunge era is behind us but I'm so grateful pearl jam is still here. Some say they sold out but I disagree they were smart and made decisions based on how they could get better. I don't think they started with the idea we will only make music that sounds grungy or like their album 10. I've seen them 24 times live and I plan on making that 30 by time I'm done going to concerts but then I'm still young, only 61. Thank you pearl jam for the decades of great music. My life is a little better as a result. One love!

Jeremy was what really got me loving PJ. I liked other songs on 10, but Jeremy just had that raw emotion in it, that other PJ's later songs had. It had power in it. And I wasn't a victim of bullying. I was the perpetrator, and not proud of it. Thinking back, I really stopped being a bully around the time this song came out. I have no idea if that correlates to anything. But I can't help but wonder. Cause I would rewind the tape, and play Jeremy over and over. One of those songs I just couldn't get enough of. Maybe on some level it did change me. I'd like to believe that.

At the time, SP, STP, PJ, Nirvana, AIC and SG were what Grunge was. It wasn't until I got older that I realized Grunge was just a label used to categorize a certain set of bands that sounded nothing like hair metal of the 80's. It was a movement in time that changed rock music for the better and I'm glad I was around for that. Take some classic rock, hard rock, college rock, indie rock, punk and metal and you have Grunge.

Pearl jams first 3 records were the the best...But that journalist is wrong...Ten is an amazing record... the strength in the lyrics was amazing...the delivery live was enough to give everyone butterflies...it was dark, yet adrenaline filled... like everyone they got older and softened down the music and delivery..however they gotten better with their instruments and always with each record deliver one or two amazing songs...and is the only band of the era that still fills arenas and stadiums work wide to this very day! some may not agree ,but they are better than Nirvana, imo.... Nirvana was great and changed the music for the better...but petal jam nailed it on the head with their music.

Ten will always be the one album almost any fan would choose if they had to pick one album to listen to and will always have a special place in any fan's heart. However, Backspacer is the next best album musically and lyrically after a bit of a “departure” from what made them who they are. Maybe they both just spoke to me at very different times and ages in my life as I’m a similar age as the band... But Backspacer is the Ten 20+ years later...

Kaya, I love the fact that No Code comes in second for you. Sadly, No Code dropped a few “fans” because they didn’t like the direction the band was going. The true fans are the ones that have stayed. Ten, VS, and Vitalogy are amazing albums in their own right but I think with No Code, Yield and Binaural they were just getting started. Truly my favorite three albums, Binaural being my favorite. When you look up the definition of Binaural, it means to listen with both ears. That means even more to me because I have a substantial hearing loss and wear hearing aids. I want to hear perfectly with both ears but I’m thankful for what I have. Anyway! I love the direction the band goes and don’t care what people think. Riot Act still sends a message but it’s so relaxing to listen to. I will admit their self titled 2006 “avacado” album just about lost me, I didn’t like it at first. By the third time I listened to it I was in love. Lightning Bolt was released at the right time. I had just lost my father to bone cancer and struggled with that death. My wife back then (ex wife now) was not supportive at all. What was my way of grieving? Work. I hid at work, working long hours, working double shifts so I don’t have to think about my dad being gone (and the shitty marriage I was in). Then “Pendulum”. Oh my god. I cried. That song helped me. I saw PJ in concert in Oklahoma. Tickets were $80/ea. My then wife says she didn’t like PJ enough to go. My brother said he’d go. I’m glad. It was an amazing time. I lost my voice singing with them. My brother got a kick out of my passion for them. Unfortunately, I lost my brother a few months ago. I’m still struggling with that. I think I’ve said enough. Sorry.

I think it says a lot when the fans favour albums 'supposed' music critics dislike, I think fans tend to have less bias and enjoy the music purely on feeling, where was critics need to analyse it, and music can't always be analysed through a microscope and doesn't always have to look good on paper. Ten and Vs are A** albums and the band should be proud of them👌

For what it's worth, I agree. You're spot on. One of the things that happens is critics study a lot, then look at it through their learning. I had a teacher tell me the way I played the song wrong. I told her close her eyes and sing it. She sang it as I played. Pretty funny.

You can tell by listening to the bands: Pearl Jam (Hard Rock), Soundgarden (alternative metal), alice in chains (heavy metal), Nirvana, which i also like less (punk), either way they're all grunge bands, so wasn't a genre indeed but i loved the spirit of it.

completely agree with you, they are blues, country hard rock oriented rather than punk oriented. but grunge for my is a vague label, nirvana sound punk, pearl jam more bluesy, alice in chains was more kind of metal oriented, and soundgarden kind of in between of metal ad bluesy (somehow stoner rock) and all of them were put under the grunge label. I think the word grunge don´t describe a sound, but maybe a mood, some kind of anger, even though the word grunge still being vague for me.

Critics hate “ Ten” ... okay do they hate The Godfather and Michael Jordan as a Chicago Bull ?? To purposely hate something great to be “ punk” or “ cool” makes you a clown. You talk to any TRUE punk and they like everything from old Hank Williams to New Wave. Kurt Cobain wanted to do New Wave n loved The Smithereens . Listen to Joey Ramone or him and they like anything that appeals to them. Maybe copycat bands don’t get much credit but it’s not like tons of Eddie Vedder voices were on fashion. Nor was good old creative rock n roll with amazing hooks written with Zeppelin sound to a Sabbath meets the Beatles n everything in between. It’s why all the Seattle bands broke and got credit for ONE sound but none of them sounded remotely alike!! They were great rock n roll bands. Period! Ten was a great Rock n Roll record as was Nevermind. It’s easy to downplay or frown away once you never have to work a day in your life again. Yet don’t discredit the effort and product that gave you that freedom .

I miss young Pearl Jam, before they became "Girl Jam". Now all we see are women who were listening to the Spice Girls back then telling us about how beautiful Eddie's soul is. Yaaaaaawn. Give me State of Love and Trust, Wash, Once.... not Daughter, Elderly Woman, etc

Really: Stupid people, no matter their profession or what pedestal they stand on, belittle Pearl Jam's TEN and their other songs/music. Honest people KNOW TEN was likely the Best album of the 1990's in the alternative/grunge genre. Stupid people have something against Catchy music, regardless if the lyrics are Outstanding (Pearl Jam) or not. Led Zeppelin's many great albums, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Guns & Roses, all had many catchy songs, but the lyrics were still Great. As I said, Stupid people say what they say, Honest people Know these bands were Amazing at least. Many "critics" have issues: They don't like to admit they are/were wrong. Pearl Jam, STP, Sound Garden, maybe even Smashing Pumpkins and Janes Addiction, were better than whom most such "critics" claim were better: Nirvanah--who were simply not as good. Is MJ's (sorry but I need to make a point) "Man In The Mirror" not so good because it's catchy? "Fantasy" by E W & F also? "Share The Land" by The Guess Who, "Home" by Philip Phillip, "Back To Life" by Soul2Soul? and the list goes on and on and..."Critics" can be among the stupidest people in any profession, and I mean critics on any art/field. Calling Pearl Jams songs Pop is like saying N'sync and Christina Aguilera were Rock. Like I said, critics can very, very stupid.
