Hey, it’s Mayim, and it's time to celebrate Purim! Purim is kind of like Jewish Halloween but we’re all supposed to get kind of drunk as we celebrate how a Persian Queen manifested Jewish salvation. This video explains it all with a little play the Grok Nation team and I made!!

About Mayim Bialik:
You might know me as Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory or from Blossom but there are so many other parts of me that you might not be aware of! I’m trained as a neuroscientist, I'm a passionate activist, an observant jew, a perfectly imperfect mother, and I'm a complicated human being like many of you. This is the place where I wear all of those hats - and none of them have a flower on them! ;)

I grew up with a Jewish mother, but a strict christian father. He did not allow me to know anything about Jewish culture or traditions. Now, at 20, I’m finally discovering Judaism. I’m so thankful for videos like this one. They give me a good bit of background before I go to the synagogue, so I feel less lost. Thank you!!

You can learn more at sites like the Jewish virtual library. I do wish that there were more programs for young adults to learn about and maintain membership in Jewish communities. (My sister set some programs up in Southern Florida.) Depending where you live, there might be a Jewish community center and there are people there who would gladly introduce you to programs. Where are you located?

I’m a biblical exegete in the TNK and also a Christian minister who has celebrated Purim with my Jewish friends before- but this is the BEST explanation of Purim I’ve seen or heard. It really captures the spirit of Purim, too, with how it is explained. Shows the power of one person to change the world! Chag Purim Sameach!

Hi Mayim! I'm a Christian but I love love LOVE Purim. Queen Esther is my favourite woman in the Bible. She is a heroine of epic proportions and such an inspiration. I love her so much that I if I ever have a daughter, I'm going to call her Hadassah. So great that you talked about it today, love the dramatization!

If your an Israelite, it's your holiday. This is why Paul wrote letters to us ( Israelites ) so you will first pray for faith, step out in faith and not just fantasize about it, but actually do it----Research your history and not just listen to random people explain your past to you. e.g. It's like the African American having their past explained to them by their former enslavers, which leaches in toadys' time. Don't even listen to me but read for yourself: Romans15:4, He's quoting Deuteronomy 32:7.

Torrey Plummer, Learn it from the Holy Bible. This video gives the concept and most of it, but in a secular point of view. The part of getting drunk was not really bibical. People have confused this, because the Bible does command that the Jews celebrate with joy and feasting, and giving portions to eachother and giving gifts to the poor, for the motive given here, but it has been done and will continue to be done without getting drunk. People do get drunk, but it is a misconception to say tha it is a commandment. Trust me, Jews are well aware of who the villains and good guy. Jews *NEED* to differiate the villains and the good guys, just like back then and just like today. This video was ok, but not entirely accurate, because of the drinking part, however this is what Jews believe, but it was not like this from the beginning, - the getting drunk part, and males.dressing up as females, that part is not commanded either, although people still do it and think it was commanded, Jews have specific laws, to not wear a females garments, it is an abomination. The book of Esther doesn't specifically mention the word G-d, but we know it is strongly implied, and Jews of that time, kept the same commandments God gave them and that is part of the reason they were hated so much in the kingdom; Jews only bow down to G-d of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob, the *ONE* true G-d, and would rather keep His commands, than worship the human king as their god. Everything else is pretty right on though.

Oh I definitely learned it from the Bible growing up. I just literally had no idea there was a holiday for and about it. It is really cool to see how these stories and histories can become such vibrant celebrations and holidays with their own reasons for what happens and why. I am kind of bummed that I am an adult woman and never knew there was a holiday specifically to celebrate this. It's exciting.

Torrey Plummer When I read the Bible story of Esther, and I heard of "Pur" I thought, "that sounds a lot like Purim," (it is) and the fact that the Bible tells you that after the Jews were saved from annihilation, *THEN* they were granted feasting and celebrating. Pretty cool. Have you seen the movie called: "One Night with the King." A good visual that will also give you understanding. I love that movie! Just make sure that everything lines up with the Bible because now I see these Jewish holidays, that secular Jews have added "reasons" to it, when originally it was not like that. Just as this video explains why people should get drunk, that was never part of the Bible story for the Jews to get drunk, nor dress males as females. The pagans did, but not the Jews. The Jews, secular and religious ones, celebrated in whatever land they were in at the time, but it was not commanded by God to get drunk. The secular Jews made that up.

there are many jewish commandments that were not mentioned in the bible but were interpretated by rabbis in the talmud, sanhedrin, gmara, mishna. that is probavly why there are traditions like getting drunk and dressing up that are not mentioned in the biblical scripture

I just started teaching at a Jewish school and this week has been a fun learning curve. It feels like a homecoming spirit week and the big party is tomorrow. I remembered your Hannukah video and I'm thankful you did this- My shiksa self really wants to understand my students. Today, fasting students were excused from PE. Naturally, we had a small classes, but magically lunch came around and 90% weren't fasting anymore 😂 (we don't fight that battle) I also thought a mezuzah was a magnetized door stop and tried grab it to prop a door open. Not good... I love being immersed in the religion and culture, I'll be looking forward to future videos, thank you and please don't stop!

In the camp of our church we were playing Esther's book once. And my friend (a boy) was playing two Jewish ladies in the same conversation and had a monologue about how the other non-Jewish citizens were expecting to get his house after Jews will be caught: "one of them even tried out the piano!" He said. We were having so much fun with that play. 😊

Jorge Lopez I support Israel! The land that was "stolen" was often waste land the Arabs sold to Jewish immigrants, at exorbitant prices, in the early 20th century. Deserts and swamps. The Jews irrigated the deserts and slowly enriched the soil. They drained the swamps. Through years of back breaking work they turned the waste lands into fertile farms and suddenly the Arabs were crying foul and wanted the land back. If you read the Bible the Lord said those nations that support Israel will prosper and those who oppose God's chosen people will fall.

Just learned about this holiday from one of my Israeli friends, and he suggested, and sent me this video to give me a starter in learning about it and I am so thankful he did. I have never viewed any of your more lighthearted videos on Jewish holidays but I am now definitely a subscriber. Thank you very much for this. It was so enjoyable, and started me on my path to learn more about this holiday. Your friend Allen Miller A Texas Christian Zionist!
