"Hey, what's that PRS?" - you guys, in the comments. The guitar PRS didn't want to make!
Shawn Tubbs shares the story of his custom Paul Reed Smith McCarty 58 built for him when he was touring for Carrie Underwood - with very unique specs which took some convincing to get!
Thanks Shawn for sharing your story and thanks to Paul for building such sick guitars! If you could have any custom PRS what would the specs be?
Check out this video from Shawn to hear an awesome solo on his MC58: • REVV Amps G4 Distortio...

I got my PRS custom 24 back in 1989, in Houston. I visited the PRS factory back in about 2001, and met with Paul. He took one look at my guitar, and immediately knew where I bought it. He said the shop insisted on him providing a guitar with an ebony fingerboard. He said this was the only one he had made, to that point.

My first PRS was a McCarty with rosewood neck. Originally was wanting a les Paul, then this guitar found me. It also has the vintage Kluson style tuners too. I did make some mods in the past few years. 1. Changed the wrap around tail to the intonatable one. Oddly improved my sustain (but the new screws are brass). 2. Changed the stock McCarty pick-ups to the 57/08s. And made this guitar sing so much truer.

Very cool guitar! I actually got to meet Ted McCarty at a NAMM show. I was working for a PRS Dealer in Seattle and we were invited to a press conference that featured Ted. I got a private moment with him afterward. He was incredibly genuine and treated me like a colleague. What an honor! Thanks to PRS Guitars! I have a killer late 2007 McCarty Model and recently got a 2020 McCarty SingleCut 594. The McCarty is bone stock because they built it for me. My 594 was upgraded from the 58/15LT’s to 57/08’s by the guy I bought it from. Really fine instruments! I dig your guitar!

Nice! I have an unusual PRS. In 1993 I ordered a PRS Artist to my specs, one of them was that I didn't want the bird inlays, I preferred the circular "moon" inlays from their more budget line. I guess they assumed I asked for it to get a discount because they told me it would cost the same birds or moons. I just didn't want the birds so told them to go ahead with the simple moon inlays. As far as I know mine is the only Artist with no bird inlays. 24 fret, Dark Cherry sunburst, wide fat neck. After many pickups I've finally settled on a Throbak PG102 in the bridge, a Fralin twangbucker in the neck. It's been 27 years now, she has become my number one "ol' Girl".

I own a PRS MC-58 Artist. Purchased it used. I've owned many PRS guitars, but I could never get clarity or sparkle from them. Even this one. Then through a trade, I picked up a Victoria Regal Combo amp. I plugged my PRS into it and it was amazing. It was everything I was hoping to find in a PRS. It is amazing what one amp will do to one guitar but these two paired up perfectly. Everything on the guitar was stuck including the 57/08 pickups. Anyways I'm very pleased with the guitar.

Nice p;laying and cool explanation of your guitar. I have a 1997 McCarty, put Seymour Duncan Antiquities in and really made a big difference. Changed the value of the capacitor and added one (.47) to the neck position hot wire at the switch to brighten up the tone just a touch. I play through an old 1965 Princeton Reverb with an EVM10M that brought the amp to life. Had it since I was 15 and Im now 51. Just had a fret job done to the guitar and now back in love with it again. I also play a 1995 CE22 that is my main guitar, I put Mojotone Blackmagic pickups in it. I normally play with the amp cranked up pretty high and the guitar on 3 or 4 and roll up the volume for a lead. I use a Van Weeldon Royal Overdrive and Wampler Euphoria. Some delay and EP from xotic. Pretty simple rig but very effective Mic'd.

Thx for the video, Shawn! Love hearing stories of player’s mods & tweaks of their PRS guitars, having done the same. Mine is a PRS SC58, I believe released circa 2011. Was a school boy dream to own a Custom 24, but my fellow band mate played an 91’ LP Custom. So, I bought the SC58 second hand from the US & had it shipped to Australia. It’s an odd guitar; has a one-piece flame maple, slate (blue/ green) artist grade top, but following staining at the factory, there’s a visible 4-5” brown vein in the maple cap running parallel with the volume & tone knobs. Have never seen a flawed PRS before. The guitar was confirmed genuine by customer support by the serial number, but it almost looks like a crack in the wood. Every guitar tech I’ve met says it’s the stain. Anyways, came with 57/08’s which are warm as you say, and clear but I needed a bit more sizzle. Currently have late 90’s HFS & Vintage Bass PUP’s installed to harken that old CU24 sound, but it’s a love hate relationship with the hot ceramic bridge PUP. Have swapped out capacitors, installed treble bleeds, you name it. But, she’s my #1 guitar for sure, and a very particular beast. Apologies, long comment! Cheers 🍻

Great video as ever, ST. I had a Paul’s guitar 2018 and didn’t bond with it - spent a year in the case - until the day I sold it to a friend, and when we plugged it into my Two Rock Trad Clean for him to demo, and it sounded EPIC. I made the sale, but missed the sound, and it haunted me afterwards. So I took the plunge on a McCarty 594 and I have to say, it’s the best made, easiest playing, most versatile and incredible sounding guitar I’ve ever owned, for them kind of crystal, dynamic, light gain tones that I like. It has made me put a Collector’s Choice LP up for sale and, for recording, is keeping a Custom Shop Strat and Tele on their guitar stands most of the time. The only “issue” I have is that, as a only a hobby/semi-pro gigging person, I fear the “banker / lawyer / dentist guitar” thing. My other strats and teles are all relic’d to some degree, sound great and are ideal for gigs. But, against my years of pushing back against PRS, the 594 is the best guitar I’ve ever owned. I love the neck shape more than the Paul’s guitar too (and much more than the LP, with better access to the dusty end of the fretboard). I wish PRS did a lightly relic’d, non-birds, non flame version for bar gigs! Love your videos as always. Stay safe.

I have a 20th anniversary McCarty. I don’t remember if I got it in 05 or 06. I put a TonePros intonable bridge, Kluson Locking Tuners on it and an Eravana compensated nut on it. The guitar was always my favorite instrument ever and though my changes didn’t harm it’s tone at all I don’t think it was necessary. I did that work to it in 2010 and it wasn’t prompted by a problem or anything. I still have all it’s original parts. The only, thing that’s actually useful is the tuners as it makes string changes quick lol. That guitar is a machine and of all the others I have Strats, LP’s, custom jobs nothing can take it off it’s throne

Love the finish and the ivoroid binding. It really makes the guitar stand out. The only thing that I would PERSONALLY change is inlays. I need them. LOL I currently have a 305, nf3, 408, and a custom 22. I've tried the silver sky, and I really want to like it, but I just haven't connected with any of the ones that I've tried. So far I've kept them all stock. PRS does a great job of making a complete guitar that really doesn't need anything 'corrected'. They all play very nicely right out of the factory. Except that Silver Sky... maybe it's the fretboard radius... I don't know...

I have a S2 McCarty 594 Singlecut in Dark Cherry Sunburst, 2020 made. I plan to get a vintage pattern bone nut, swap the toggle switch electronics for the core 594 drop in electronics & switch from black to cream/white color, and switch the knobs from black lampshade to amber lampshade, I think it will just sparkle more than it does now. I may decide to do pickup swaps later, but one thing at a time. I absolutely love the guitar, love the bevel more than a core violin too, when palm muting etc, my forearm rests at the angle of the bevel, very scientific approach that I think gets talked down a lot by core owners.

I am the proud owner of a PRS MC-58 Artist. I have been buying, trying and eventually selling PRS guitars since the early 90s. I love the look of the guitar, but I never found one that "sang" for me. No sparkle or articulation. Then 6 years ago, I saw an ad on Craigslist for a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50. I went over, and forgot to bring a guitar. He said he had one he was selling and pulled out the MC-58. I thought...OK, I know this will sound like. I plugged in, and was blown away. It sounded amazing. He was the second owner, and told me the first was a gigging guitarist. The PRS was dinged, scratched and had a 1/2" crack on the finish on the top. But...I loved that tone. When I asked him how much, I was floored. He didn't want to keep it as it wasn't perfect like his other guitars. I pulled out the cash I was going to use for the amp, and walked out with the MC. It's the longest I have ever kept a PRS. My favorite setting is the two pick-ups with the splitter know pulled. It sounds great in all my amps.

.....PRS McCarty owner here. Yes, an outstanding guitar. No, didn't have to change out anything (which, for me, is unheard of) Thought I wouldn't like the bridge or kluson tuners (& probably like you, the jury is still out on that) but I've come to love them. I run mine through a Mesa Mk-5 combo & sometimes a Marshall 900 series 212. Every bit as good as any of my RI Gibsons (better actually) Mine is more plain Jane than yours (no binding & just no-frills dot inlay fret markers) I've tried other PRS guitars & this is the only one I want. Truly a classic

I have a PRS SE 245 single cut in Amber. There was a crazy sale a few years ago on thanksgiving and it was $250. I gutted the electronics and replaced it all with CTS, Switchcraft, vintage clothe covered wire, and SD Pearly Gates pickups. I also wet sanded the back of the neck with 600 grit paper, didn’t break through the finish, just took the sheen off. I have a few guitars and this is by far my favorite. It’s the cheapest guitar I own, well before all the replacement parts. I’ve had it set up and would like to replace the tuners with locking ones. It holds tuning great, I just don’t think they will make it in the long haul. It gets played 95% of the time and I just love it. Been thinking of buying a McCarty 594 in S2, I just can’t afford a core model. My only worry is I will spend all that money and still only play my SE. lol. Love the guitar so much.

Great story love it. I own 4 PRS's. 2 of them I would never mod, pretty special models, a marc holcomb usa and a dustie waring. The other 2 (custom 22 and a SC 58) I modded. On the SC 58 I replaced the pickups, it is funny that you really liked'm, that shows the difference in taste/style and what we hear in our heads. On the custom 22 I replaced the hardware and also the pickups, in both guitars I put Fishman fluence Willie Adler model in. The tuners you have look nice indeed, but stability wise I would go for their locking tuners, they are great

Love this McCarty. Distinctive and elegant. I've got a DGT that I've swapped out all the plastic parts for wood, with chrome knobs from Qparts. But the pickups are still stock, such a major part of what makes the DGTs special. I also have a CE24 that is such a great shredder. Neck plays great for moving fast (not usually a fan of 24 frets but nice to have for the shreddy studio stuff). I did gut the electronics, replacing the 5 way rotary pickup selector with a 3 way toggle with a tone pot that splits coils. And I put the old stand by Seymour JB and Jazz pickup combo in it. The coil split sounds great with these pickups and the middle position gets a great Strat out of phase tone since the neck pickup is closer to the bridge than normal due to the 24 frets.

Hardtail. Someone had already modded it with a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck and a Distortion in the bridge-with the coiltap. Sounded all wrong for a Mac. Ha! And my newest aquisition-an '07 Singlecut trem tobaccoburst with the #6 pickups and a wicked flame top. I like used guitars. The Studio was an NOS guitar that was never sold until I bought it five years after it's build. All the others were previoulsy owned and played. They all rock! The DGT is the gnarliest. On your demos, I always like that guitar and the Suhr with T-style with humbuckers (Thornbuckers?) on your demos--I'm typically doing something else while listening to KZbin demos, not really paying attention to the video, until something I hear catches my attention, and these two guitars tend to do that.

Love my PRS. I have a sc245 artist pack with the same pickups as yours. They sound great I think. I will say I play my Suhr more but that’s because of the stainless frets. If the PRS had stainless frets I probably wouldn’t put it down.

Very cool, if I did a custom built I would also eliminate the birds and dots. I love them but I have a need to be different. I have a McCarty private stock, CE22, custom 22, hollow body, custom 24, and silver sky. Silver sky gets the most play but my true love is the custom 24 for playability. No mods, but considering doing a heavy relic on the silver sky

I have two double cut 594s, one singlecut 594 and three McCarty's Stoptails, and a a few Paul's guitars which are essentially a McCarty with enhanced switching. The Paul's and the McCarty's get the most live use, but I find myself in the studio always using the doublecut 594. It's just a vibe thing, no rhyme or reason.

Shawn, always appreciate your kindness and eloquence, as well as your playing. First class always! That guitar ALWAYS catches my eye when I watch your vids, do you think they would make that an artist model? I'd be interested, and I generally have not had much experience with PRS. Thanks, man, you are always a welcome presence. Much success to you!

I’d say that the dings and scratches are a part of the character and story of the guitar. I also prefer every spec over the standard ones so PRS magic for sure and great ideas from you! Except maybe the pups since I like the newer ones. And fishmans for hi gain. Also I’m for inlays but I can see the appeal of a naked board.

Shawn that is a beautiful guitar. I really love PRS guitars I have five and they are all stock. I have a custom 22 , custom 24-08, a SE Santana, a Se Sc245, and a Silver Sky. PRS really puts out a great guitar. I really enjoy your playing and you got me wanting a REvv D20. Good job.

I have a 30th anniversary custom 24 that is about the same color as yours. Mine is a quilted maple top and the color was called tortoiseshell according to the paperwork. I also have a '95 CE 22 with the Dragon (1) pickups that I think would sounds great through the purple channel on a Revv. I'm very fond of that CE, probably because it was my first nice guitar.

Love this guitar! I have a ‘98 McCarty Soapbar that I‘ve modded pretty heavily. Put Lollar mini Humbuckers in it and swapped the tuners for some custom order Gotoh tuners. By the way, they make an awesome drop-in locking replacement for the vintage style keystone tuners if you want to maintain the same look but have the quick string changes!

Gorgeous McCarty. Love the binding. I would’ve had them do moon dots if it were mine. Keep the Klusons (original)!! Is the finish nitro or V12? I LOVE McCartys. I have a regular dark cherry burst 1997, a 2009 Smokeburst (nitro), a 2009 Sunburst 245 Singlecut nitro and a 2021 McCarty 594 Artist. All stock.

Any thoughts on the non intonatable wrap around? Any intonation issues? I have a McCarty double cut soapbar which I mostly love but really get curious about trying an aftermarket adjustable stop tail bridge to be able to dial in upper register intonation

I have the stock wrap around on my SE 245. I really like it and it seems to intonate well. I wish the contact to the posts was tighter, it’s just a bit tilted when the string tension is set. I also have thought about getting something that is separate string adjustable but there is a part of me that says too many small parts and not a big solid connection so something has to be lost. And in my personal style, I’m so heavy ham fisted I’m not sure if notice. But if you do try one, love to hear the results.

What I have trouble understanding is how come so many guitars have tuners like those so how come they are problematic for you and PRS? Beautiful guitar by the way, I think that PRS sometimes lays it on a little thick and this is more understated

Yeah, I love that guitar 👍I have a '98 Tigerseye Custom 22 with moon inlays, it's the guitar that responds most to adjustment that I own ie the truss rod actually works, lol. It's a little dark which is likely to be the original Dragon II pickups, I bought some Lollar Imperials but I keep balking when I go to install them! I think I'm suffering surplus empathy for this instrument, what do you think Dr Tubbs?

This is one of your nicest guitar. The top is stunning. I have a Kauer Starlighter with a similar fretboard (no markers). Very resonating instrument, even when played acoustically. Kauer are quite underrated, compared to PRS. I play a DGT which is a great guitar by all means, but the Kauer’s got more mojo to me… Cheers Shawn

The title said Paul hates these specs, Paul hates everything they did in the pass, i don't know if it's the company or him or Jack higginbotham. Seeing how they discontinued the standard treble and bass pickups, sweet switch and other specs they had mostly in the 80's.

The McCarty is similar to an LP in that the scale length is the same and the materials, (mahogany back and maple top) are the same. The McCarty is a double cut guitar so the aesthetic is different. The McCarty is lighter in weight than the typical LP and has a wrap-around bridge as opposed to the LP having a bridge and stop tailpiece.

ivoroid and celluloid used to be standard on almost everything. Gibson went to CAB (harder than old celluloid, but more stable - but also brittle), but the lazy plastic binding and the mock wood binding didn't come until penny pinching and wage cutting was de rigeur. Never been a fan of that style of bridge on PRS, and despite buying 100 guitars in the last 25 years, I've not had a PRS. I see the 594 has the traditional bar and bridge (so that the string tension is straight down on the bridge). Lots of people like it, what they like is their business - never want someone else to take an opinion that's not their own. I just don't like them. All that said, that's a great looking guitar and the ivoroid is a huge step up in looks to make the guitar look warmer and less plasticky. can't tell if it's ivoroid or celluloid up the neck. (i'm not a player, i"m a terrible player - do it anyway - but rather an amateur builder feeling out differences between guitars that I make) That guitar sounds great. So much has changed in 25 years when everyone wanted heavy and high gain and not separation, and now we like that warmer heavy mid sound that sounds so much better at low gain (me, too - went from one to the other).
