So, to show how good Steve McMichael was to someone who doesn't really know American football, he was one of the best defensive players on one of the best defensive teams of all time. He was a two time first team all-pro defensive tackle, and if you're selected to the first team, it literally means you were considered by the media to be the best at your position, and it's considered an enormous honor obviously. His specialty was getting to the quarterback. Most defensive tackles try to attack the run, but Steve was a pass rushing tackle, which are usually the most valuable. He probably should have been in the HOF a lot longer ago.

@marcjohn9404 thanks for the explanation! For people like myself in a country where rugby is almost a religion, most of us know very little about American Football. Sounds like he was one heck of a player in his day, and it makes it more impressive that he tried his hand at pro wrestling afterwards.
@marcjohn9404Ай бұрын
@nzmetalhead Yep, that's a pretty accurate assessment. Not to mention, NFL offensive linemen (the guys he has to get through to sack the QB) are about the height of Kane and Undertaker, but heavier usually, so picture how strong and athletic he would have had to of been in his prime to be a top tier talent. Super impressive that he could do it, and he probably would have had a much better chance obviously if he started earlier in his wrestling career.

What I loved about Mongo was he wasn’t there for a payday. He gave you the impression he wanted to be a great wrestler which justified him gravitating towards flair even though in real life he could kick his ass. It made sense he wanted to be with a champion and learn from a champion so he was on of the few big guys which made sense being subordinate to the rest of the stable. I liked him for the same reason I was a Malenko mark. There was just authenticity. Congrats on the HOF and the ring ceremony the bears gave you, deserved in every way.

I can definitely tell you stuff about both Kevin Greene and Reggie White, having seen both men play in the NFL. Greene is highly regarded as one of the best outside linebackers during the 1990s, with his stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers being very memorable. The guy was a wild, funny guy who in his own words was a fruit loop, but a nice guy overall. He was a terror in the field, having gotten a total of 160 sacks, 62.5 tackles for loss, 23 forced fumbles, 26 recovered fumbles along with 5 interceptions. He was inducted in the Football Hall of Fame on 2016. Sadly, he passed away on December 21, 2020. As for Reggie White, he's considered as the greatest pash rusher of all time who played with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers. He amassed 198 sacks in the NFL, 19 fumble recoveries and had a 9-season streak of accumulating at least 10 sacks per season which still stands as a record today. He was nicknamed the Minister of Defense not only for his incredible prowess, but also because he was an ordained Baptist minister during his college days at the University of Tennessee. He passed away too soon on December 26, 2004. He was inducted in the Football Hall of Fame 2 years later. He was well regarded and loved by many people. Speaking of White, I've never would have known he got into a PPV with WCW if not for this video. That was a big surprise!

I kinda view Mongo like proto-Monty Brown. Looking back now, I'm glad for Mongo being around in WCW. He was at least trying his best even while a lot of factors did hamper improvement, but he (alongside Kevin Green) did genuinely enjoy working and was a good sport about it. He did have a kind of endearing charisma to him in commentary as well. I remember one funny segment where Mongo sprayed silly string at Heenan on a Nitro that happened on Halloween. He def had character. Also, think about other big guys that even while lacking in ring skill can still make up for it in other ways and have fairly decent or longer careers. Kudos to Mongo for making the NFL Hall of Fame and thank you for making this one.

He was a over exaggeration character and did his thing, he nailed the important part of American pro wrestling and that is entertainment.

I like Mongo for what he was and always did, but one thing that always stood out to me was despite the fact that Steve was very clearly learning as he went (as you pointed out!) they had him using a potentially DISASTEROUS move as a finish in the Tombstone. Really should have been using a spear/football tackle as he debuted and was established before Goldberg. On a side note, besides Flair, Mongo has to be the biggest omission from WCW/nWo Revenge on n64. Wonder if there was some sort of NFL-related issue with his likeness?
