10th most popular name, this refers to the Irish Republic though, the clan was mostly northern based, it is the 9th most common surname in Northern Ireland, it is actually the most common Ulster Gaelic surname in Northern Ireland, Kelly and Moore are more common but they would have came from the south at some stage. In the 1990's 50% of all Ireland O'Neills came from the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, there were alot in Leinster and some in Munster but very few in the west.

Tipp O'Neill was a government figure in America also . My name is Owen Roe O'Neill. I'm so proud of that name ... He was called the uncrowned King of Ireland . Great warrior...
@justinneill50033 жыл бұрын
Owen Roe was a fascinating character, he was a career soldier and made his name leading a Irish regiment in the service of the King of Spain in the Spanish Netherlands, before returning to Ireland to defend his home country. He had many successes but the biggest was probably defeating a larger army of Scottish Covenanters at the Battle of Benburb. It was said at his death that he had been poisoned by enemnies, which inspired the song "Lament for Owen Roe." Check it out on YT, it's a haunting melody.

O'Neill for me is from Niall mac Cailien on my Campbell line from Grain O'Neill apparently if I found correct is Niall's Ancestry the high Irish King goes back to Galacia Spain, Gothia, then Scythia and with a Prince my 120 Great Grandfather Niul ben Phœniusa idk if this is right but it's a neil varient person born in circa -2401 bc he may have been a darker complexion middle eastern person rather than what we see with uk and ireland as scythians were middle eastern area nomads

My family name change from O’Neill to Riney after the war Kinsdale fled from kerry and cork Ireland. Ri means king and ney means Neill referring to Hugh O’Neill. Which I am a descendent of. In the early 1800s by family changed their name again due to economic reasons to Raney.

From recent Irish genealogical research: Notably, the sample of subjects with surnames linked by genealogical tradition to the Uí Néill dynasty shows a significantly reduced pattern of divergence from this central haplotype when compared with the background normal distribution seen in the Irish population generally. The powerful legacy of the IMH ancestor on the population structure of the northwestern region is borne out by the disrupted distribution observed in this area. The Uí Néill surname samples were not genotyped for binary markers, since it became apparent during that general population survey that R1b3 chromosomes could be readily detected through STR profiles alone. The Uí Néill sample population was composed of the following surnames (sample number): (O')Gallagher (12), (O')Boyle (9), (O')Doherty (5), O'Donnell (4), O'Connor (3), Cannon (3), Bradley (2), O'Reilly (2), Flynn (2), (Mc)Kee (2), Campbell (1), Devlin (1), Donnelly (1), Egan (1), Gormley (1), Hynes (1), McCaul (1), McGovern (1), McLoughlin (1), McManus (1), McMenamin (1), Molloy (1), O'Kane (1), O'Rourke (1), and Quinn (1).

Chill Out I would call us Anglo-Celtic but in reality we probably have both Celtic & Norse blood from the Irish side and Saxon, Briton & maybe also Norse from the English side.
@markmonaghan23098 ай бұрын
There is no difference in people born on these islands or Europe other that living by the sea or up a mountain . The link between the o'neill and Niall of the Nine Hostages is just exactly what noblemen all over the world have done, basically make stuff up to justify their position. The traditional roll of kings and its chronology is now recognised as artificial. The High Kingship did not become a reality until the 9th century, and Niall's status has probably been inflated in line with the political importance of the dynasty he founded . People love being told that they are descendants of something great . I think people would be better off looking for similarities than differences in humans.
@justinneill50038 ай бұрын
@@markmonaghan2309 I don’t think I ever suggested that Niall was more than a legend, but the O’Neills of Ulster were nonetheless a powerful and enduring dynasty. As for the MacNeills of Scotland, I’m not aware of any hard evidence that they were of a shared ancestry, but given the fact that they are associated with the Outer & Inner Hebrides, not too distant from Ulster, as well as bearing the same name, it’s a reasonable assumption to make. Being aware of, and taking an interest in your ancestry doesn’t mean elevating yourself above your fellow man; this is 2024, I think most of us are grown up enough to get that.

@@lucybarrientes8319 a genetic research group tested the blood line of Neill, his haplogroup is m222,records show his dynasty lasted from 400ad to 1100ad, at that time a new reign began, testing and documents show that the m269 haplogroup was now the new bloodline(the Y-chromosome) , so not the original dynasty but a dynasty nonetheless
