I wish I knew more of my family line. But I'm a proud Murray and my dad's always raised me to believe our name is a name that holds weight and I should never disgrace it

Trouble is much about my family was spoken words handed down from my relatives. It can get confused as its passed down. I got back to the 1600s, the I couldnt read the writing anymore.

I'm a Murray from Scotland, at least on my mothers side. From what i've heard, my family came from Ireland at one point in time.

My Grandmother’s maiden name. Her great Grandfather first came over to America in the 1840’s. They spelled the name Murry. Strangely enough her birth certificate, she was born in Manhattan, 1875, is also spelled Murry. I am wondering if there was some significance to that or just spelling mistakes.

Great story.. 👍 Its very likely that your ancestors name was misspelled.. My name is Freel in English, which is also commonly spelt Friel, or even Freil.. Because the scribes who took the names of the immigrants just guessed really.. As most of the people coming in couldn't read or write, their name was spellt the way that individual scribe would spell it as.. Hence, many variations of the spelling of the same name.. Murray, Murrie, Mury, & Murry.. Hope that helps!!

Interesting, but I’m not Irish at all. My last name is Murray. It came from somebody in the family, besides my dad, and grandfather.

There is debate as to whether the name Murray actually came from the Moors , the black slave owners.
