In hind sight Nintendo passing on the Sony DVD was good for all of us. Nintendo would have continued to utterly dominate and we wouldn't have gotten as much innovation in the industry as we did with the entrance of another player. Sometimes something bad has to happen for something good to spring forth.

True, but i think Nintendo wouldve still expand becsuse they are still to this day more creative and make more fun games than xbox and playstation. Remeber, all the games that ps1 had wouldve been and was suppose to be on the n64. They all just moved over to playstation. U still make a fair point though but look at gaming now? Sony hasnt been creative at all and all their console are the same with the same controllers just a little bit more better graphics. Nintendo still is being innovative over the big two. The switch is killing it right noe. Personally i think the switch is the best console hybrid now even over the ps5 and seriex. Nintendo needs to come out with a powerful console and make all their games mature instead of word box cartoony games

@@redcrimson1028 Okay, so you want Mario to just kill toads with a shotgun? You pretty much want Animal Crossing to be like GTA where you get to destroy property and harm people? You want The Legend of Zelda to be a Hentai based game? You want Nintendo to just be exactly like Sony in their culture mimicking their every move? You pretty much want Nintendo to be like Microsoft to where all their IPs are converted into first person shooters? You pretty much want Nintendo to create a system that willfully allows, encourages, and enables 3rd parties like EA, Activision, Eidos, and others to take advantage of Nintendo fans financially and exploit them just like Sony and Microsoft do? You know, I'm tired of seeing comments like yours that involve people like you being jaded, cynical, and vague with no depth. @@redcrimson1028 The agreement with Sony was abusive though Sony would have received most of the profits from software sales. Nintendo stood to make little money off the CD platform for quite a lot of effort which is why they terminated the agreement, it just didn't make financial sense.

I wanted this soooo bad when it was announced/discussed in magazines. Had a western release happened I would have had it day one. Would go nice with my Virtual Boy, Sega 32X, Sega CD, and Sega Nomad. What if the 64DD had instead been a CD-ROM drive add-on and the cartridge slot could hold a RAM/temporary storage cart(something that could hold more than system memory and could be accessed when needed by games). The extra storage of the CD with the power of N64 would have been so cool

21:15 I got to be honest. I think it would be really cool if this was included in the switch online expansion pass via the N64 games. I mean yes it's cool that they have regular F-ZERO X for the N64 on there, but I think it would be even better to include the N64 DD version with the ability to make custom tracks. I mean that's awesome especially considering the best F-ZERO game ever made F-ZERO GX on the GameCube didn't even have a custom track editor. I mean you can customize vehicles and put in cool emblems and stuff but no track editor.

Doesnt surprise me. Japan was usually the testing ground for obscure hardware like this (like the Famicom Disk System, Sega Meganet, Famicom Net System, etc) and this kind of gamble likely didn"t warrant a larger potential writeoff than from a domestic release.

The 64DD was probably doomed by the fact that cartridge ROM prices fell significantly during the n64's lifespan. They fell so much so, that it was possible to sell 64mb carts, like Resident Evil 2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day, for a competitive retail price. That took away what would have been one of the platform's main selling points (especially for potential publishers) - the ability to sell bigger games for cheaper retail prices than ROM carts or the same size. I guess that is the reason why when Nintendo eventually got around to releasing it, they pitched it as a niche device for creativity and net access. Wonder if they made any money from it? (I doubt it).

A big reason why the 64DD has been postponed again and again is that it should work very closely with the Internet service. However, it took Randnet and the company behind it far too long to set up the service and provide the server infrastructure for it. That's how the late release came about. Because the hardware itself was already finished before the release of the Nintendo 64

I just love how Nintendo was always about inovation, while still keeping an eye on the price of their Consoles. Many stupid decisions where made, like no backlight on the Gameboy line and the fear of CD because of Pirating. I get the reasoning, but Nintendo could have an even better footing if they managed some things differently.

Fantastic video about the competition of that time! Recently I read all SuperPlay (UK) issues of 1996. Although an independent SNES mag, the editors there were extreme Nintendo apologists and totally full of it. They praised the DD in 1996 and were hostile towards the PSX and bashing its owners and its PSX games as unimaginative, while N64 and DD is the future, despite all the criticism from the readers about the N64 itself being delayed and not being released until April 1997 in Europe. What a shame that they disliked the PSX so much, although all their favourite SNES RPGs were continued only on the PSX.

Mario Artist was the first game I got to experience creating 3D objects. I also got to try Google Sketchup, and the newer Blender programs. But Mario Artist had it all, sadly it was broken up into so many different segments. I liked how you could use them for creating your own characters in SimCity 64, but I never bothered to try and figure out how to build, load, and save creations to import to SimCity 64. I liked the hide and seek game, and being able to walk the city, ride the train, or fly the helicopter. I was never able to get my city to grow enough for the Mario statue. Doshin 1 is a classic now, and with only slight improvements was released in Pal countries for GameCube. As far as I know, I'm the only person to beat the expansion disk and see all the mini movies, as well as translated both Doshin 64DD games so I could beat them both. Japan Pro Golf 64 was interesting, with the various courses. The leveling up to become a better player was a bit annoying, and I was never able to get a 'Hole in One', even after resetting after each hit, and trying again. I was worried I'd wear out the disk drive, and still not get the hole in one. I got to see all the ends, but always wanted to see past the password, online play lockout screen. F-Zero Expansion disk had some nice new music, and it was fun to twist and bend the track to race your own courses, but I never played much of the N64 game. I played Excitebike 64 more, and I liked the unlockable desert, hill climb, original 3D modes of Excitebike, better. Randnet disk was rather useless. Doshin: More Than Giant /watch?v=ISm7LR8T-F8 /watch?v=x15BOA84U90 SimCity64 mini games /watch?v=4UiP6RC_LLA Japan Pro Golf Tour 64 description translation of game text /watch?v=BaizpA8NUaM&list=PL6EE6C362BB14119D

TBF the PC Engine CD-Rom was a huge success in Japan to the point that it eventually became the primary format on the system. The Playstation and Saturn were not more more technologically advanced than the N64 they just had a better storage device. As far as the graphics hardware was concerned the N64 was the best system on the market at the time. In a way it was a victim of that, the hardware was expensive compared to the PS1 so adding a CD-rom drive and the extra RAM necessary to support it would have driven the price too high. The team of ex SGI employees that developed the hardware that would become the N64 actually took it to Sega first who asked for some improvements then eventually said no anyway. Next stop was Nintendo who took a look and immediately halted their own internal development project for a next generation system and purchased the rights.

While it was a commercial failure, I don't think this was Nintendo out of their mind or taking a page from the Sega playbook. They took a page from their own playbook, this is pretty much the same thing that the Famicon Disk System was to the NES but, for the Nintendo 64. It wasn't a huge leap on their part, it was just the wrong move at the time. Had they made a CD-ROM peripheral it might have just taken. It's hard to say, it would obviously be very tied to the reception by the third party developers.

It's sad the 64DD didn't take off Mother 3 and Zelda on it seemed very interesting. Also one of my favourite SNES games Simcity had an update for the 64DD

While it looks like from the outside that the DD was a bad idea, I wonder if teaming up with Sony would have been worse in the long run? Would Nintendo have lost some of its identity and distinctive qualities chasing the mass market through Sony, or indeed have been sidelined completely? Much like the Virtual Boy, there are hints and pointers to what followed next in the DD - user generated content, connectivity with the Game Boy, even Doshin the Giant shows that they were still being experimental and trying something different that other companies wouldn't.

"... stupidly discontinuing to work with Sony." Yet another KZbinr painting Nintendo as the bad guy here. I suppose if your most valuable assets were in danger of being swiped up under buried fine print, you'd be wrong to pull out of the agreement as well...

@Yeah Right I find it completely hilarious how as a reply to a proven example of a shady business practice by SONY, you would bring up supposed shady Nintendo practices. "Why should I root for that guy currently being robbed? He has supposedly robbed people before." That's what you sound like. Past crimes are irrelevant to current ones being brought up. Also, Nintendo has, to my knowledge, only started legal cases against parties who actually threatened their copyrights. If there are any actual cases that Nintendo has objectively been in the wrong on, I'm all ears. Also, shady business practices? Which ones? Selling features tied to amiibo? Selling compilation games at way below market cost for a limited time to avoid devaluing their IP? What are you exactly talking about? You sound like the twitter hate mob who never set food in a business class arguing against standard supply and demand while owning iphones manufactured by the actual most evil business on Earth. You want to argue Nintendo's ethics with me and think you'll make a lick of sense? Yeah Right!!

I have always wanted this and the GameBoy Light. Would have bought both if they dared to release them in the U.S. Really would have been great if they didn't have all those delays.

Soooooo, the N64 DD was a _floppy disk_ drive? A *compact disc* drive would've worked much better, would it?

You'd think they'd have learned after other manufacturers failed with their add ons (Atari with the Jaguar CD and Sega with both the Mega CD and 32x) . Console buyers don't generally want to buy potentially expensive peripherals just to play games, and the developers of games won't develop for a platform with few users, which reduces the demand by other users, which reduces the supply of games further and so on. Still, even Microsoft didn't learn from everyone''s mistakes, releasing the Kinect, watching it fail then trying to push it again with the Xbox One..

Hey there dear Lady, I got a rabbit hole for you to discover.. The game is named as Flashback and WHY ooh WHY!!! it is better on Amiga 600 compared to SNES, SEGA.. and even the new re-booted one. (My theory is that Amiga 600 had and has the better soundchip than what a SNES has and some SNES games were developt on a A600.. I still got some disc's that has some game prototypes for SNES, But +30 years on a magnetic disc's.. I barley dare to open the disc holding cabinet.)

The 64DD really should have been shelved right after the Dreamcast came out in Japan (The DC came out November 98 in Japan). Nintendo would release the GameCube only two years later.

Love the videos, but when you play music from Secret of Mana, and a Link to the past, I get distracted listening to the and don't hear what you say :D Yes I thought the 64DD disappeared entirely back then, I think I saw it once or twice in UK mags and that was it. God, we knew almost nothing back then!

But 64MB of proprietary storage? That's less than 1/10 of a CD (and more expensive to produce), considering the DD was being developed to compete with the Playstation it seems like they entirely missed the point.
