Italy had some of the most beautiful and perfectly designed liners of the postwar period.

Of all the Italian Line ships, the fictional S.S. Antonia Graza, from the 2002 movie Ghost Ship, is the most beautiful one.

@@transatlanticnostalgia4655 agreed! Hollywood rarely gets ships right, but this was an exception. The fictional ship was obviously designed by someone who did their research or is a ship nerd like us. It perfectly depicted the Italian style of the era.

@dwaveryn I've read that they essentially assembled a small team and had to design a new ship almost from scratch for the movie.

@dwaveryn The Graza holds a special place in my life, as she was what solidified my love for ocean liners. I was a child when I watched the movie, and thought that the Antonia Graza was a real ship that actually went missing. I was absolutely enchanted with her story. What especially caught my attention was the salvage law, the idea that whoever finds an abandoned ship would own her. Plus, with how she was constantly described as extremely beautiful in the movie, I became enamored. I began dreaming of finding her. My dream was to win the lottery with my family, so that we can buy a tugboat like the "Arctic Warrior", and go looking for her. I planned on towing the Graza to port, restoring her, and making her our "family ocean liner" for us to sail the seas on :). I didn't even care about the gold (which I didn't believe she was actually carrying, and thought that part was made up for the movie), I just wanted to own an ocean liner real bad, lol. Now, I do realize that there are a gazillion of reasons why, even if she WAS a real ship, the scenario I hoped for was totally impossible. But I was 9-11 in that time period, so I can forgive myself. 😌 In any case, I was really sad when I found out she's fictional. What's crazy is, my dad knew she wasn't real all along (or at least realized it based on logic), but pretended like she was, so that it wouldn't break my heart, and actively participated in my discussions of how we would find her one day. So yeah, the Graza is a special ship for me. My favorite fictional ship, and now that I have grown up, I realize she is indeed very beautiful, and it wasn't just my enthusiastic childhood perception.

Nice job, young man. She was a favorite ship of mine. I got on board 3-4 times during her time in NYC. As a kid I never understood the limitations and issues. I only saw her as a beautiful liner from my country of ancestry. Italian line was shortsighted on their construction designs. Had they made all three classes, or even better yet, made the ships only two classes, with full facilities, comparable decors and portholes (Michelangelo and Raffaello) we may have had them as part of the Carnival or Premier fleets into the 21st century. New diesels and some rearrangements would have garnered these ships a longer career. Well done you !!! Thank you for pronouncing all of them beautifully.

@@SeaTravelr123 Thank you so much, my good sir! I’m part Italian myself, from Naples. As for the Leonardo, I also believe it’s related to jet planes as well. Thank you so much for watching the video!

I remember sailing from New York on the RMS Queen Elizabeth in July 1967. The LDV was berthed opposite, painted white and looking as immaculate as she was beautiful.
