Oh, it's been years since I watched this series...and to this day I haven't been able to get over them. I was so affected by their story that it's still like a pain inside me

Here is what I loved about Tommy and Grace: not only that it was a story of two people with trauma, anger, and vengeance finding peace, goodness, and acceptance with each other, and also finding their true match. I loved that Grace had her own interesting backstory and that her character was an equal of Tommy's in terms of intelligence and ability to negotiate. However, in comparison to the other women Tommy has romantic relationships with, she was also far more optimistic, cheerful, and sweet- something which Tommy needed and which may have matched better with who he was before the war (as Polly says, Tommy laughed a lot). People forget that who Tommy is now isn't who he always was and the story is all about his struggle to get back to that person he was before the horrors of war. She herself was affected by the trauma of her father's death and was blinded by it when it triggered her, which made her able to empathize with Tommy's own struggles with PTSD, and gave her a gravity, grittiness, and strength which matched Tommy as well. The sweet, innocent moments between Tommy and Grace are lovely such as dancing at Cheltenham and the flirting at the bar, but it's the raw moments like the IRA shootout at the Garrison that elevate their romance. It was moments like that that were integral to Tommy's character progression and story arc because he didn't need someone he could pretend to be someone else with, he needed someone who could see him at his worst and still view him as a human being, still see him for the good he was capable of (now personally, it's a huge gripe of mine that we didn't get such moments in season 3 and hence it weakened the portrayal of their relationship). That is the story of Tommy from season one to season 6, to acknowledge and accept the bad you've done while still recognizing that you are still able to do good, to choose to do good. Tommy and Grace's relationship, at least in season one, was a display of this. There is also the theme of Grace loving Tommy for who he is, not just the money he could provide. This is noted when Campbell tells Tommy that "people like us can never be loved and what love we get, we will have to pay for", to which Tommy later refutes with, "she loves me." Grace didn't love Tommy for being a gangster because when he said he would someday throw his gun in the canal, she asked, "why not now?" and offered him a chance to get away from it by going to New York. She didn't love him for the money he eventually earns because she had that with her husband (perhaps even more at the time), as well as a man of good breeding, and still she recognized that she would rather be with Tommy. I don't completely love their scenes in season 2 and 3 because it wasn't as successful at portraying this theme. In season two, we saw that they were in love and longing for each other, but we weren't exactly reminded why. Yes, I suppose with the comparison of their significant others, who both represent a relationship for each that would give them the basics of what they need, but not everything they want (Tommy makes the comparison of the goldfish in the trough "they look happy enough, and why wouldn't they be?"), they liked having someone who challenged them. It made me miss their scenes in season one where Tommy and Grace negotiated with each other, taking turns at having the upperhand in the conversation. In their reunion scene, it felt like only Tommy had the upperhand and Grace was at a complete loss as to know what was going on. Also, her choices seem questionable to viewers, such as getting married to another man, trying for a baby, yet continuing to write to Tommy and secretly meeting him. Obviously, this is supposed to come off as her trying to move on yet being unsuccessful in doing so, but Tommy does the same without getting married and trying for a baby. I'm sure this was mainly done for drama as well as a story arc for them both that is about them continually dropping the ball on each other for thinking things are too complicated and finally, after cataclysmic events, a near death experience for Tommy and getting pregnant with Tommy's baby for Grace, forcing them to overcome any obstacles to be with each other. It is a good story arc, I just wish I saw more of a portrayal of their relationship dynamic from season one. Their scenes in season 3 were very sweet and it was wonderful to see them so happy, especially Tommy, I just wish there were also moments of gravity and rawness. There was no real point in making Tommy keep the things that obviously caused him so much stress from her since it didn't cause her death, unless that was a very implicit point of the writer's. It went against everything that Tommy cherished about their relationship in season 1, "will you help me? With everything, life and business", he wanted her at the family meetings, and again the idea that he could share the worst parts of himself with her and still find acceptance. I understand that after having a child and becoming a bigger criminal figure, he prioritized her safety and experienced increased fear for it, but by not sharing his business troubles with her, this mainly weakened their relationship and the idea that they truly belonged together. Since the show in all of its seasons after does not make this point, it just comes off as bad characterization. I also disliked that Grace's reactions to Tommy were a little too sweet, like when he clearly doesn't promise her what she asks him to during their wedding dance. She didn't need to get angry or upset, she could have just been contemplative, clearly understanding that he isn't making that promise of leaving the dirty business behind to her, instead of "teehee!" giggling. Likewise, when she sees Tommy out of breath from fear that something has happened to their infant son, we don't see her kick up a fuss or demand answers, he orders her to leave the child alone and she goes along. Perhaps this is meant to be more of a sword to agonize Tommy with after she dies because she did keep putting her trust in him and he failed her in that, but again, it mainly comes across as out of character, weakens the idea that Grace was an equal match for Tommy, and went so much against what we saw of her in season one. Still, all in all, I love this couple from a combination of the story arcs, characterization, acting, and chemistry between Cillian and Annabelle. I'm hoping there will be something of this great couple in the movie. EDIT: And I will say I was impressed by how the show stayed true to their love right up until the end. Tommy never loves another woman like he loves Grace, she is always on his mind, and the best he can do is try to replicate the moments he had with Grace with other women (such as dancing with Jessie Eden to Gtrace's song). In his last moments before he intended to kill himself, he takes off her wedding ring before putting down his timepiece, signifying that Tommy's time was up. It's attention to detail and carrying on themes like that which make Peaky Blinders such a stand out show.

You're right. S1 was the best balance between them, and so therefore, full of potential to tell a story with depth. Kind of like Polly was always capable of anything.... The 'loving wife' storyline was a bit of a letdown eventually..... still, all good .

@@Si-ji5bra lot of shows season 1 is the best the moment the plot makes the relationship end or edgy it doesn't hit the same like dan and serena series 1 they where perfect after that the plot made them not reach the same

Perfectly said. One of the most well written and portrayed love stories on screen. It's such a slow burn in season 1, it takes its time which in part makes it feel so incredibly close to real life. I too was annoyed at Grace getting married immediately and trying for a baby, but then again what other choice would a woman in that period have? Tommy has the luxury of staying single , women did not.
