How can Frieren is popular? if many people make a video of a new show like frieren there must be a reason, it's because Frieren is actually good. My crackpot theory is that watching Frieren made RCanime reevaluate his life and how he's spending it, after going back to the source (going to Japan for him, TLoK for Frieren) he is now entering a new Era where his species is diminished mostly by their own hand (anitubers, elves) and has decided to make the trek again but this time to have a better understanding of what he's doing with his life

In some ways its a challenge to Tolkien's work. It doesnt just show the coming of the era of humans, it explains WHY the era of humans was coming. A dominating demon with OP killer magic spends 80 years in stasis and then gets basically one shotted by mages who spent the last 80 years studying his magic. Tolkien's work never really addressed the passage of time, It talked about time and the ages but never addressed the idea that a villain's relative power over time would shrink as the magic is better understood. On the other hand humans have lost access to the spells they had 1000 years ago.

Also, occasionally the boys remember they were once an anime podcast called Trash Taste who was made up of anime fans. Afterwards they return to being former fans well into their successful anime fans anonymous (AA) lives. Digi is still around as Trixie The Golden Witch at Ygg Studio and We Watch Anime. Other channels, too, I don’t remember what they were. SloanTheFemaleOtaku is around very sparingly. I think Sloan does more cosplay at anime cons than videos anymore. Channels like The Weeb Crew, Westside Otaku, The Bellman, Ember Reviews, Bonsai Pop, Hiding In Public, Zeria, A Sleepy Insomniac, Blocky, Goat Sama among other new people. There’s another new channel I can’t remember for the life of me. They had South Africa 🇿🇦 flag in the video title or the thumbnail. Welcome back. Banger video for a banger show. I do think that what makes Frieren special is the fact that it takes direct influence from Tolkien's work, but there sterility of modern fantasy anime isn't merely just from forgoing their Tolkien roots, because for the most part, the modern isekai takes iconography and tropes from JRPGs like Dragon Quest and light novels like Mushoku Tensei. They've always been direct derivatives of these works specifically that were inspired by traditional high fantasy. It feels like there's another immediate layer of separation even before they started copying each other. They take the explicit video game level up mechanics, party member archetypes, slimes, Demon Kings and the like from JRPGs, and they take the reincarnation and harems from the latter. This doesn't affect any of your arguments, but I think noting where specific strains of media got their tropes from before they just started copying each other is interesting, especially since this case eventully led to works like Re:Zero and Konosuba.

Sometimes I wonder why fantasy anime fans don’t just read books since there are dozens if not 100s of fantastic fantasy series written in English out there to explore and 1 Google search is enough to find most of them. No offense to frieren since it’s still a solid 8/10 for me but it doesn’t compare to the greats of the fantasy genre like asoiaf, malazan, realm of the elderlings, book of the new sun, second apocalypse, wandering inn etc. honestly you can probably find far more well done fantasy vn than anime and there ain’t that many vn.

"Works that came out a few years before" I mean, Dragon Quest is Japan's once and future darling. It was the solution to giving the masses a way to experience a game experience like Ultima or Wizardry on the Famicom. Ultima and Wizardry are themselves just games that allow you to have something like a D&D experience on the computer. And D&D itself is again a codified reskin of tabletop wargames with added roleplay, letting you live out adventures like the one that took place in Middle Earth. Dungeon Meshi is another descendant of Wizardry. Heck, any webnovel isekai that has a settlement in the vicinity of a dungeon upon which its trade and economy is dependent, is just another one standing on the shoulders of Wizardry, the video game series that died out in the west, but lives on in Japan. Really great video editing, btw, I enjoyed the video.

I think what makes Frieren resonate so hard with so many people is the time it's releasing during in real life. We're all still recovering from the pandemic and rethinking our priorities in life, and I think a lot of people, myself included, are releazing that there is nothing more important in life than forming happy memories with the ones we love. Frieren is such a good mentor to the people around her, and we've seen her change in philosophy from being cold and distant when in the Hero's Party to bringing out the best in others during the First Class Mage Exam. That's an inspirational message that changes hearts.
@alhesiad5 ай бұрын
Eh, comparisons with Tolkien feel a bit forced here. There is some -vague- thematic "convergence", but in Frieren's it comes from taking JRPGs tropes to its logical conclusion, while in Tolkien's is intentional evocation of germanic and greco-roman notions of mythical golden ages.
@friedhotwings6 ай бұрын
I’d like to point out that just because Frieren lives for millennias, doesn’t mean 10 years feels like 23 minutes to Frieren. There’s still 24 hours in everyday, and 365 days in every year. Frieren experienced those 10 years just like everyone else in her party. It’s just a smaller portion of her lifespan.

99% of fantasy stories descend from Lord of the Rings. The modern depictions of elves, dwarves, orcs/goblins, and even dragons, as well as the "party of adventurers defeating the evil lord," springs from Tolkien's work and redefinition of folklore. That said, Frieren is far more tied to the lore of Dungeons & Dragons than anything else: its elves are long-lived but not truly immortal like Tolkien's, and also shorter than humans. Plus Mimics... although now I suddenly have an urge to see Galadriel or Legolas squirming inside a chest with teeth.

We should also not forget that also Tolkien was greatly inspired by previous fantasy and not at all "the" creator of this setting. A huge inspiration of course, especially to Frieren. But elves, dwarves and the concept of how beings with a long lifespan would perceive the world differently are all things that existed before Tolkien was born. Especially the Norse mythology was a big inspiration to Tolkien. Taking inspiration of great works, is how new great works are created.

If I remember right, a lot of the earlier fantasy anime were inspired directly by.... Dungeons and Dragons. Specifically, I recall hearing that Slayers and Record of Lodoss War in particular were allegedly inspired by particularly long D&D campaigns. But since D&D itself is in the Tolkien high fantasy universe (either borrowing a lot or a little depending on how generous you're feeling), that's why they didn't feel so derivative just yet. I agree though, it definitely feels like a lot of modern fantasy anime are simply retreading fantasy tropes instead of finding fresh inspiration from the OG sources - Toklien and the other high fantasy inspired by it.
@cainiwakura5 ай бұрын
Lodoss is not 'inspired' by D&D, it is actually a D&D campaign adapted into multimedia franchise. Lodoss alongside with Dragon Quest actually one of the tropes codifier of the early Standard Japanese Fantasy Setting for their own medium, Lodoss for Anime and Manga and DQ for Video Games.

Glad I'm not the only one who picked up on the similarities. Obviously it has to be said that these are very different stories and worlds in superficial terms (in most ways Frieren's setting draws from D&D and its derivatives rather than LotR's distinctly low-magic pre-medieval world) but the themes (especially around the elves) are strikingly similar. In most fantasy, Elves are basically just humans with pointy ears, but I think both Tolkien and Frieren get across how alien they would be to the human experience. It's less obvious in the films, but Tolkien's elves aren't just ethereal and regal; he makes the point several times that they can appear ancient one moment and childlike the next (e.g. Legolas is more lighthearted in the book.) The creators of Frieren capture a similar uncanny mix of deep time gravitas and youthfulness while also dealing with similar themes around the fundamental differences between Elves and Men. I don't know how familiar the creators were with Tolkien's work directly but at the very least it's interesting convergent evolution.
