You named two flaws that aren't even flaws. The dialogue is the best part of the show, NisioIsin is a wordsmith. The characters are focused on heavily throughout, often through the dialogue. Idk what you mean by them focusing on the background art being a flaw, having good animation doesn't take away from the characters at all.
@SE_Lin8 жыл бұрын
dwarfplayer I disagree. There is no excess of anything that is unsuited for the medium of cinema. The point of art is to be able to express freely. If a director wants to focus on dialogue or adapt a work that focuses on dialogue he should be able to, because adding audio and moving visuals enhance the dialogue even further if done correctly, which in Monogatari it is. The dialogue doesn't detract from the visuals and vice versa. Heavy dialogue isn't limited to novels. Visuals aren't limited to cinema.
@SE_Lin8 жыл бұрын
dwarfplayer Dude... I just don't agree with you at all. You can't put limitations on art. I had no problems following Tatami Galaxy, that was a wonderful adaptation of a wonderful book. The mile a minute dialogue is part of it's charm, it would have sucked if they dialed that back just cause they felt not everyone would be able to follow it. Tatami Galaxy is a niche work, not everyone is supposed to follow it or get it. It has to speak to you as a person. Even more so with Monogatari. Shaft's goal with the Monogatari series is to do their best to adapt a light novel as a light novel, not as an anime, to make you feel like you're "watching" a light novel. And they accomplished that. You act like they don't cut dialogue from the books, they do. They always have and they cut a lot, that's what is in the text flashes the majority of the time. Cut expository dialogue or inner thoughts. They do this because they don't view any dialogue as not needed, just less important. For a series based heavily on dialogue and character interaction I don't see how they could. Even the most mundane of conversations can add something to the story through subtext, implication, showing a character's mindset during the conversation etc. They know animation is different from books and they account for that. The huge speech at the end of Bake IS the climax. It's literally 24 minutes of people arguing about their problems and it's fucking intense, that's the beauty of it. It doesn't take away from anything, it is everything. It is everything the show is trying to be and it plays to all it's strengths. It's impeccably directed with the animation quality of feature films at the time. Watch that episode again and even if you don't like the story tell me you can't appreciate how much work went into making that. You complain how it doesn't focus on it's characters but ALL it does is focus on the characters. You say the focus is so hard on the animation over the characters but the majority of the time the backgrounds are static and minimalistic. They focus more on character movement and expression in their animation, which accompanies their dialogue and adds more to their character. What would you rather have happened that would have "improved" the climax? Less dialogue? Ya ok, you don't know NisioIsin and Monogatari isn't for you.

Your picking up on topics about things like a history teacher and while yea most people wont like to jjust listen to a history lecture you make it interesting to a demographic of people who are seen as the "slackers" or "nerds" in society, picking up on this while also puttin in social influence means really you are helping kids and other kinds of people who may not have a drive to learn and using something like anime to make it so damn interesting. Honestly i cant get enough of your videos cause they're well made, interesting, and im learning about something ive never hear'd of through Anime, ANIME DUDE. Probably one of the most under-rated channels on youtube would have to be yours and when you try to make funny videos they really are funny. Using anime to teach people interesting history and other stuff like the camera movement video are great dude so please i beg of you up-load moreeee~.I can understand that it can be hard to upload alot since your videos are so well made and you have to do everyhing on them but if you can find any way to do it please do. I'm really surprised, in a good way that is. I discovered your channel months ago and I didn't really like the content that you were proposing, Yet, I've just watched your more recent videos and I realized that you have made some really significant progresses when it comes to the way your write, the fluidity and the rythmn of your analysis and just about everything else, even your editing skills are getting better and better. Keep on working your ass off man, it's really paying off ! I'm a young French filmaker, I basically write, shoot, and edit each of my movies and as a fan of japanese animation, I thought that the parralel you drew between the Monogatari Series and the French New Wave was really interesting. Nowadays, one of the main problem that we have when it comes to filmaking in France is that we don't really express our creativity to its fullest potentiel. The New Wave have had such a big impact on the way we make movies that we are stuck in a situation where most of what we produce are poorly written comedies or really pretentious movies made by the same people who created the New Wave, the main problem being that they are not in lign with our period of time or way of thinking anymore, what seemed reavolutionnary back then is just common troop now. Yet, they keep on remeniscing about the good old days and about the fact that the movies which they did back then were "sooo better", because younger generations are stupid, am I right ? All of this is occuring while the little guys or the really creative ones are forced to go other countries in order to have their movies made. Or we're just working on really choatic schedule with only a little amount on money and the rest of the industry loooking at us like : "What the hell are those kids doing, they are going against our culture legacy and everything that we've created ?!". It's a shame because in reality, we're just trying to change things and to experiment while having fun and loving what we do, just like those old pretentious folks did when they were younger, sweet irony...

Excellent video. I had heard about the Nouveau Vague in an interview from 1998 with Hideaki Anno and Kunihiko Ikuhara. When I finally watched Breathless (which is an excellent film that literally screams that it was an inspiration on anime such as Monogatari so seriously go watch it), I could definitely see the influences it and other films of its kind had on Gainax, Shaft and Ikuhara's works for sure. I couldn't help but feel like you did me a huge favor with this video. I try so hard to describe anime like this to people trying to compare it to something in Western cinema without having the words available. But you basically spouted out right away that the Nouveau Vague was an influence on the Monogatari Series style SHAFT utilizes, and then proceeded to give all of the evidence, comparison and support for why. And that was just magnificent. I can forgive you for your flubs here especially with pronouncing Monogatari and Araragi incorrectly because of this masterpiece of a video. Definitely your best yet.

I don't know if you've covered this but its about Symbolism in Monogatari. I know that there is a large emphasis on symbolism and other themes throughout the series. However I'm not very good at interpreting all of this so I was wondering whether you can talk about it because I do enjoy your Monogatari videos, as you can see I am a huge fan of Monogatari, I love the show because of the character interaction and its style, as you just covered.
@MartyAraragi9 жыл бұрын
***** yeah, I mean, I can pick up the references, but when people say "Symbolism this, Symbolism that" I'm lost at what exactly are they talking about. If something in the later events is referring to something that happened in Kizu, or Bake, I can pick it up. And yeah, wordplay is an interesting subject. i love the interactions between Araragi and Senjougahara in The Mayoi Snail arc. One of my favorite arcs for the wordplay alone.
@MartyAraragi8 жыл бұрын
dwarfplayer Yes. But I believe that for myself, that it is hard for me to pick up what exactly is being symbolized. Like say, what religious symbolism is being played here. What Greek myth is being represented. I mean unless its obviously pointed out. What problems of society is being presented here. I am not fully aware of my surroundings. I don't know what's happening anywhere outside MY world. So when I hear "Ah I like the symbolism of this this and this." I get a huge "?!" Like "Did I completely miss something?" And I myself feel really left out. I feel dumb, stupid. I mean. I passed English, I graduated high school. I know what to do and whatnot to do. But when I get hit with this "?!" about symbolism, I just feel left out.
@Henry-jl1xt8 жыл бұрын
Huge fan of the series here as well as you can see from my nick (duh). My favourite arc is definitely Hitagi Crab, because everything just comes together so perfectly on so many levels. The apparition as a representation of a mental/ psychological problem (her weight loss hints at anorexia as a consequence of her family history), the double meaning of the crucial word "omoi" (can mean both "weight" and "feelings", she loses her weight because she suppresses her feelings, both figuratively through the doing of the crab god and literally through her anorexia), the similarity/ pun between kami/kani (god/crab, hence the god being a crab in the first place) - all of this makes for such a strong conceptual whole that I am still dumbfounded even after so many viewings. Now, if you want to have your mind blown by the genius of Akiyuki Shinbo, read this blog article, its amazing :) surprisinglycomplex.blogspot.ch/2013/05/bakemonogatari-behind-summer-triangle.html
