I'm guessing the reason for this is that some people just don't recognize faces very well (see prosopagnosia, or face blindness) so they tend to go more by general features. This also reminds me of this weird effect where if you suddenly replace a person with a completely different person (for example switching them while an obstacle temporarily obscures them) people talking to the original person may not react to the switch at all even if the difference is very extreme. (Male turns into female, white person turns into black person, etc.) It's like their brains just auto-edits their memories to match what they're perceiving. It's stuff like this that has me wondering if some people are actually less conscious of reality than others.
