“Why don’t those damn oil companies fly their own flags on their personal property-maybe a flag with a gas⛽pump on it. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested. I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism." Nate Hagens really does feel like the Voice of the Unseen that we need right now, and fast. I work in environmental lobbying and these topics are rarely spoken about in a broad sense. We reguarally have meetings where people will drive across the state to hand out plastic-wrapped buttons or something, and when I talk about how unsustainable these practices are it’s viewed as an insult. I feel terrible because it is very difficult to find serious environmental groups in my rural area (Should have tried harder in College, I guess) so I am essentially censoring myself in order to be able to stay within a community. Thank you for remaining true to your convictions, Mr. Hagens. You are my inspiration and hero.

Nate, Thanks for a clear-eyed, I believe, description of some of the forces (energy-driven) at work in the current conflict, and the urgent need for focusing on deconfliction. Having been a medic in Vietnam myself, if you choose, my best regards to your dad. Likewise, if you choose, feel free to pass along that as a fellow former medic in Vietnam, I consider what I have learned from his son's (your) work, to be exceptionally enlightening and helpful to people around the world trying to find, and create a livable and civilized path through a remarkably difficult and dangerous time in history. Thank you both.

Abraham Lincoln "I don't know a more irreligious attitude, one more utterly bankrupt of any human content, than one which permits children to be destroyed." Daniel Berrigan "What is really amazing, and frustrating, is mankind's habit of refusing to see the obvious and inevitable until it is there, and then muttering about unforeseen catastrophes. Imagine the people who believe such things and who are not ashamed to ignore, totally, all the patient findings of thinking minds through all the centuries since the Bible was written. And it is these ignorant people, the most uneducated, the most unimaginative, the most unthinking among us, who would make themselves the guides and leaders of us all; who would force their feeble and childish beliefs on us; who would invade our schools and libraries and homes. I personally resent it bitterly. There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." Isaac Asimov "The world would be better off if people tried to become better. And people would become better if they stopped trying to become better off. You're certainly welcome@@equinnox70and thank you for expressing your gratitude. 🙏🏻 "Freedom and order are not incompatible... truth is strength... free discussion is the very life of truth." Thomas Huxley "Human communication, 'as the saying goes, is a clash of symbols' it covers a multitude of signs. But it is more than media and messages, information and persuasion; it also meets a deeper need and serves a higher purpose. Whether clear or garbled, tumultuous or silent, deliberate or fatally inadvertent, communication is the ground of meeting and the foundation of community. It is, in short, the essential human connection." Ashley Montagu "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change, that lives within the means available and works co-operatively against common threats. Appreciated your input in the Oil Drum days and appreciate it even more now. It seems surprising to me that while “renewable” energies have really dropped in price to where they are price competitive to fossil fuels, the political and media establishments have not really pushed conservation in the same way. It was big during the early oil crises. It still remains true that a barrel of oil saved is better than a barrel of oil burned, and is better for the environment as well. Rather than being prudent and conserving, our world civilization seems more like a meteorite, making a big effect quickly, burning brightly, only to be followed by winking out.

hi from iran wish the world peace side note hormizd is named after king hormizd after "ahura mazda" in old persian meaning "wise lord" or god in the worlds first monthestistic religion king Hormizd is first mentioned during the wars of Shapur I against the Roman Empire.[1] He was made the king of Armenia after its conquest by Shapur I in 252.[1] Hormizd is believed to be many modern historians to have taken part in Shapur I's second Roman expedition, which took place in the Roman provinces of Syria, Cilicia, and Cappadocia, and which lasted from 253 to 256.[1] This is supported by the reports of the Cappadocian conquests.[1] Cappadocia does not appear to have been the only area that Hormizd fought in: according to the Scriptores Historiae Augustae, the Roman rebel Cyriades assisted Shapur I and a certain Odomastes in the conquest of Antioch.[1] The name Odomastes is an incorrect transliteration of Hormizd, and may thus suggest that after plundering Cappadocia, Hormizd took part in the siege of Antioch in 253.[1]

There was a part in the book Disorder by Helen Thompson (previous guest, I bought and read the book because of that episode) where Iirc it was sometime in the 1970’s and the US was really worried that the USSR Iraq and Iran were going to be on the same side politically which would’ve allowed the USSR to rewrite the rules of the world order. It didn’t workout like that but now it increasingly seems like the US has wasted its soft power and stature on the world stage. If Russia Iraq and Iran are on the same side that’s pretty bad news for the US. That book is a good read btw. It really is crazy how much politics goes on in the background for these natural gas pipelines and how the mainstream news covers none of it. I think American foreign policy has botched this whole thing by sanctioning or outright destroying all these pipelines. Maybe this prediction will be incorrect but I think Iranian and Russian natural gas are going to eventually end up routing into China & India and Europe is going to regress a lot. With regards to this war tho I think if the US tries to go to war with Iran the US *could* “win” but I think the war itself is the civilizational suicide button. Even if Iran is destroyed the US is gonna be so screwed up from the war that it’s gonna be over for American power. Our leaders are absolutely stupid enough to destroy everything and themselves tho we have hardly anything keeping idiots out of power in America

Thank you Nate. My father was a British soldier in WW2 then joined the French Foreign Legion with the name of a dead British soldier, and was tricked into signing a second contract at his drunken farewell party and saw many terrible things before being medically retired after being released by the Vietnamese after surviving the battle of Dien Bien Phu. He was not fond of wars and advised me to never go overseas to fight someone else's war. Unfortunately the military industrial financial complex has shaped our structurally unjust terminal patriarchal system of destructive exploitation for 12,000 odd years when the first colonial cult of homo superior was formed in the once was "fertile crescent", the crucible of our civilization, and has been simplifying nature in its own barren brained way and leaving deserts in its wake ever since. My take on "The land of droughts and flooding rains" (Australia) is that it is a reflection and creation of bare and barren brains, and was managed for egalitarian abundance by the First Nations peoples for around 65.000 years or more, but the North is largely ignorant of their truly sustainable cultures and mastery of working with nature with a multi-generational focus towards the appreciation of the rich world they knew they were temporary parts of and maximization of biodiversity, amenity and abundance for all. And their wars were only occasional and fought to preserve egalitarian justice as far as I, a white descendant of Irish Convicts and pariah from mu own cult ure can tell, and I have been researching their ways as part of an effort to work out how we can salvage a survivable biosphere by addressing all of the major problems coherently to leverage beneficial positive feedback's and produce beneficial outcomes far greater than the sum of their parts. I could clearly see the "doom" in early 2004 but could also see potential solutions and proactively developed those ideas despite the corrupt denial that prevails. All the wars last century and this century have been fought for "Natural Resources", I graduated as a bachelor of Natural Resources in 2010 with first class honors for my thesis "Developing an Integrated renewable energy, water supply and carbon management system for Australia as an alternative to fossil fueled systems" (2009) And BZE produced a similar. more marketable effort a while after I had graduated, but I was ignored, although I was pursued by some academics to undertake a PhD so I designed and negotiated one they ultimately did not want as I attempted to frame reality, the padded inverse Ivory silos of academia embedded in flat Earth are not helpful. I assumed they cared about our Earth, silly me. I have been sufficiently disillusioned to see things as they are now though. It would be great to chat one day. I hope a global ceasefire is called and aid can get to the innocents suffering terribly. Thank you for your great efforts For our Earth Bob

Iran would probably have been a democracy, more or less secular, for the last 70 years had the UK and the US had not meddled in their politics when Iran's PM, Mohammad Mosaddegh, nationalized Iran's oil fields in 1953. The UK was doing BP's bidding. Democracies are rational and cautious. Authoritarians, whether secular or religious, are for the most part reckless.

Nate, thank you for your data analysis. One cannot argue. The mind reels at the thought of 100 million barrels of oil per day, those beeing 44 gallon drums per barrel. Has anyone of your listener/viewers ever stood next to one such barrel? Or tried to imagine 100 million of them Per Day? It's quite beyond human comprehension. I often think you forsake the promise of solar, fusion, etc., and should give alternatives a better hearing, but replacing those 100 million 44 gallon barrels which make human civilization possible is such a monumental task, nobody gets that.

The Straight of Hormuz is today as strategicly signifiant as the Dardanelles Straight was in history, connecting east and west from the Trojan War, not really about the most beautiful woman in the world but about dominance of the Dardanelles to the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of WWI. In that last one the Anzacs, Canadians, British and other allies's objective was to capture control of the straight and destroy the Turkish forts. Russia did not want to be isolated and the Germans wanted to build a railway from Berlin to Baghdad (close to oil) bypassing the Suez Canal control by France and Britain. The Balkan nations were rivals supporting one side of the other, Russia or Austro-Hungry, or wanting independence.

1. Conflict in Ukraine can be deescalated by helping Ukraine win the war. Because Putin isn't going to stop unless he is stopped. 2. Oil doesn't just make the economy function, it's needed for agriculture. So a rapid loss of the oil supply won't just cause an economic disaster it will also cause famine in many countries. 3. Global supply chains are fragile things that were only made possible by U.S. security policies. But Americans are less and less interested in patrolling the world's oceans so sooner or later, these supply chains are going to break.

In his book "A Short History of Progress" Ronald Wright wrote "Letting apes run the laboratory was fun for a while but in the end a bad idea." Recently William Astore - history professor, retired Air Force Lt Col - said he thought the U.S. was addicted to war. And of course the entire global economy is strongly dependent on oil. May the Creative Forces of the Universe smile in our general direction, to the extent possible, and as Yogi Berra noted, "You never know when something surprising might happen."

Thanks for everything, but I was a little stunned that when discussing the "religious component" you didn't mention the actual Theocracy in the room. I miss when it was Persia, and even miss the Pahlavi dynasty, but it's been the Islamic Republic since 1979 and that's who your dealing with, not the people of Iran.

in terms of future oil reserves: you mention Iran, Russia and Iraq. I'm curious as to whether arctic circle oil reserves factor at all into these future oil sources, or are just not significant enough to consider?

Nate, you did not mention Venezuela, which is a western country, close to the USA. And which has the largest, by far, proven crude oil reserves in the world. Which, although is a dictatorship, is not a radical islamist country. But a Christian, modern, capitalistic economy.

Electricity represents only 20 percent of global energy use, and, in any case, solar panels and wind turbines only last 20, 30, or possibly 40 years before they need to be junked and new ones built (using fossil fuels).

Replacing oil with a different energy source will continue the ecocide. The natural world simply will be destroyed using a different energy source. The answer is not to replace current energy sources, but to retire them by doing less (degrowth).

"Secular Zionists"..."religious component". That's a contradiction. The secular Zionists form Israel's right wing, and they think of the descendents of Israel as a people, a nation, not as a religion. That is why they are called "secular." This is a case of outright Nationalism, nothing more nor less, and it galls religious Jews both in Israel and in the diaspora. I hope you will qualify this statement in some future Frankly, Nate, not because I think you are antisemitic, but because I think your brief statement could be so misconstrued.
