Okay. Just so we’re all clear, this story is not about two separate personalities fighting for supremacy to control one body, but rather it’s about a man who wanted to live on the edge without tarnishing his respectable reputation. Needless to say, the drugged he concocted worked, but as time marched on the transformations began to happen on their own accord, which made it difficult for Dr. Henry Jekyll to maintain his secret life as the vile Edward Hyde. In the end, with his back against the wall and no way out of his predicament, Jekyll took his own life by consuming poison to avoid the consequences of all his actions as Jekyll and Hyde.

that is a nice way to look at it. many people would like to do such but as you said, don't want to ruin their reputation. mr hyde was not a different personality, otherwise doctor jekyll will have no power over mr hyde's actions. mr hyde really was just an immoral version of dr jekyll, but if mr hyde is alive, doctor jekyll is. Not exactly two personalities, but just different morals. mr hyde would just be as smart as doctor jekyll but not as kind. they both would value their own saftey. they are both lucid. they have the same memories and plans. they are NOT different people in a body

My take upon reading the book was Jekyll was tortured by his less virtuous leanings and wished to rid himself from the guilt much like those with distasteful vices they wish to shed. As much as we try to suppress them, they are always there beneath the surface and it's up to people to continue to shun them as a vice or embrace them as virtues. I think Jekyll was tired of fighting them and split himself into another entity who would have and embrace those vices. The movie adaptations have Jekyll wishing to save mankind when he was really doing this for his own sake. I find the original's motive much more intriguing and interesting. Another detail I seem to remember is that Hyde's skin was smooth like a newborns. It's been decades since I read the story but I really enjoy the tale being told as a mystery and wished someone would produce a faithful movie using the same framing device. Unfortunately, all the adaptations I've seen put Jekyll front and center and follow the dramatic horror route.

It's a shame stories like this and Macbeth are taught the way they are (at least in England). I have seen some people on KZbin who don't understand how groundbreaking these were at the time, and what foundations they laid for other stories, like Breaking Bad.

I find it really strange that Hyde, the embodiment of everything evil about Jekyll, has only kiIIed one person. Like why didn't he go on a rampage immediately or something?
@LS2689
@LS2689 Жыл бұрын
I think that, when we refer to 'everything evil about Jekyll' it doesn't necessarily mean the desire to kill, evil can take many forms, addictions, dark desires, lack of morals and more. What I mean is that there are lots of things that can be identified as 'bad' or 'evil', which can be things we can identify with to a certain extent, it doesn't have to go as far as to murder. That's how I see it :)

Question: How does Stevenson present the theme of 'Mystery and secrecy' in the extract and in the rest of the novel? In the extract from Chapter 7, the theme of 'Mystery and secrecy' is evident when Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield stop in front of Dr. Jekyll's door. The door's appearance and the closed window contribute to the sense of mystery. The window being "half-way open" and Dr. Jekyll sitting there with "an infinite sadness of mien" create an aura of secrecy and concealed emotions. The window being immediately "thrust down" when they are spotted adds to the intrigue and mystery. Throughout the rest of the novel, the theme of 'Mystery and secrecy' is a recurring element in Dr. Jekyll's transformation and his relationship with Mr. Hyde. Jekyll keeps his transformations and the nature of his scientific experiments hidden from others. He goes to great lengths to maintain secrecy, even using a different name (Hyde) and signing documents with "Edward Hyde." This level of secrecy creates a sense of mystery surrounding Jekyll's activities and his connection to Hyde. Stevenson wanted to convey the message that hidden secrets and the pursuit of mysteries can lead to dangerous consequences. The mystery and secrecy surrounding Jekyll's experiments ultimately result in violence, terror, and the unraveling of his dual identity. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of keeping dangerous secrets and delving into mysterious, hidden aspects of one's life.

Not according to Jekyll’s own account in the novel. “I have observed that when I wore the semblance of Edward Hyde, none could come near to me at first without a visible misgiving of the flesh. This, as I take it, was because all human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil; and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil.”

This reminds me of a conditioned called Gangstalking and a video I have on my channel about a women on Dr. Phil that is stalked by men, sees a shadowfigure, they mind control and kidnap her without any recollection of leaving the house, she even has physical marks on her body being evidence of abuse they inflict on her. Her camera's are being hacked, cellphones messages come in from these abusers but they have no evidence or recordings of it happening. This sounds almost like an alien abduction where people have memories under hypnosis. I've done a bit of research on this myself, even spoken with Abducted Target individuals, I even at one point had a conversation with the girl on the phone but it sounded a bit like a male mixed with female or had conversations that it told me he was an ancient being attached to a female body in regards to aliens. Now I realize that this is an alter ego or split personality and my best explanation would be spiritual possession from the other side also giving victims memories, aliens are very much related with poltergeist activities, my outcome is possession and invisible aliens are living right under our noses.
