The Strange DNA Triangle Of Concord, Destiny 2 And Marathon

Sony just showed off Concord, a new 5v5 hero shooter that did not go over great with the public. On closer inspection, it seems to share a lot of DNA with Destiny 2 itself, and there's probably a reason for that. Plus, we talk about Marathon being in the hero shooter mix in the future.

In the Concord gameplay trailer I Straight up Saw Icarus dash, heat rises and Hunter Dodge. It look like Crucible but with Hero classes with 5v5

Having hero classes automatically makes it a worse Destiny, I dunno if I want to play a pastel plastic hero-quip slippy-floored aimbot game if I can literally pick my loadout in Destiny and have my character not bleat “I think that enemy got… the point!” for every button press. 3 ostensibly silent “heroes” is enough for any game.

Marathon was already going to be fighting an uphill battle being an extraction shooter. Making it a hero shooter turned it into a 90 degree cliff. I haven’t seen anyone excited about the game since the hero shooter rumor started. I really hope it’s not true.

Marathon being a hero shooter absolutely killed it for me. My absolute main attraction was the customizable aesthetics since Bungie has a phenomenal art department. Now all I see in my head is the valorant cash shop 😥

Anyone else who has this feeling that Concord is basically the Cancelled Bungie Project "Matter" cuz the only thing that leaked about that project was that it was very "Colorful" and different but somewhat same as Destiny PvP. I don't know but i just have this feeling that this is Matter or what matter was going to be until it got cancelled and then Ex-Bungie devs just made something similar to it.

I dont get how a game could come out like this in 2024. The game markets itself way too safely in the Hero shooter genre. Like as a consumer, what would motivate me to play this game that is exactly like every other Hero shooter? Concord doesn't seem to have an original bone in its body. Gameplay is ripped from Destiny, the characters and quips are ripped straight out of Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks like a knockoff in every way without an actual Identity of its own. I hate how many "original IP" are just companies shamelessly copying whatever's popular, adding nothing unique and expecting success from it

Id argue having a weekly cutscene for character development in a 5v5 pvp shooter is pretty original. Copying exists in all forms of entertainment, It only works for certain situations though. Lies of P is a pretty blatant souls copycat, and most people don’t seem to mind.

Concord’s whole look is just straight up Destiny! From how they start with the planet and those ships appearing, and then the looks of the location feel like Vex architecture, and then the general moves of the characters on the screen, resemblance is uncanny valley scary.

I have a funny feeling that the engine their using is the Tiger engine or extracted models and readjusted on another engine. It seems that Sony launched this because Bungie wasn’t fast enough with Marathon. Now Bungie might change what Marathon is again.

Josh Hamrick and (IIRC) John Weisnewski were both foundational sandbox devs from Bungie (they personally designed a lot of our favorite exotics). I believe both had been there since Halo Reach and stayed through a few years of D2. Saying they’re copying Destiny is hilarious because that’s just saying they’re copying themselves. Not sure how the game will turn out but I imagine the guns and abilities will at least feel good. They were guests on the DCP Podcast years ago and it was interesting to hear the stories about them doing the early work on D1.

The OG Marathon was one of the first shooters I ever played. I was disappointed it was going to be a PVP primary game. I've since come around to the possibility of something new but hearing these changes is making me skeptical again about it. There's some browser extensions that let you see dislikes. KZbin still tracks them and it's accessible via the API, so those extensions basically just make it visible again

That Concord game straight up copies some animations from Destiny 2. The double jump seems to behave exactly the same as Hunter’s, as does the tripmine. And it also pulls you out to third person for movement abilities, which is not common in FPS games outside of Destiny.

Destiny looks like it’s already over. From a solo mostly PvP player’s standpoint Final Shape looks like it’s gonna be a mess from Prismatic. The only game I liked! And I’m so turned off by all of the changes in Final Shape. I’ll wait and see what Marathon turns out to be I guess? But my guess is that Concord is looking to scoop up the bummed out Final Shape rejects like me.

Should we be surprised? The final shape is a whole expansion of reused assets and concepts. The new subclass has one one ability, the transcendent nade and a lot of the areas are repurposed. Still looks decent but nothing special

Remember the whole Chapter thing that was supposed to come after final shape. Had the final shape not been delayed and/or light fall not been hacked together to pad out the release schedule. It entire possible that a lot of stuff in the expansion was stuff that’s just been canablized from the chapters to get the game out the door and management can bounce on a high note.

I am genuinely excited for this game, and I absolutely love new hero shooters. It's a bit disheartening to see FPS streamers saying it doesn't look interesting or that they're bored of hero shooters. You know what? I'm bored of Souls-like games and traditional FPS games like Call of Duty and Valorant. Give me looter shooters again! Give me more hero shooters! I'm all here for it, and I think Concord is going to be great. Plus, the only popular hero shooters that are true to the genre are Overwatch and Apex, but Apex barely counts. Now, we have Marvel's Rivals and this new game coming, but that only brings us to four. In this State of Play, they showcased three new Souls-like games, bringing the total in the last two years to well over ten. I can't even count how many battle royales and traditional FPS games like COD there are. Let us have our corner, please. I really think the reason they don't like hero shooters is that they don't like working in teams and just want to see their name on the scoreboard with 49 kills to feed their ego.🤣

A ton of the things pointed out are similar to destiny but then again a ton of moves in destiny are nearly identical to overwatch, bored lands, so on so forth. This doesn't seem like asset taking, when you have so.many unique characters with unique abilities I think it's obvious they will take inspiration from games around them. A fire grenade has existed since they bloody arcade game in the 80s. Nothing is unique anymore so don't get upset and similarities.

Jesus christ i am so sick of hero shooters. Let's name a few off the top of my head that have released over the years and vary from good to why release this. Team fortress, overwatch, valorant, apex legends, paladins, Rainbow 6 siege, rogue company, Quake Champions, battleborn, paragon, lawbreakers, evolve, COD: black ops 3, destiny 1/2, whatever marvel games released that were hero shooters idk i dont enjoy superhero stuff, plants vs zombies garden warfare, borderlands (should this count?).....i could go on and now marathon and concord? I wasnt going to buy marathon, i havent even bought final shape and i had not preordered a destiny DLC since witch queen (which i didnt even play until the 3rd season of that expansion), but genuinely i would have preferred if Marathon stuck with being a tarkov spin off with destiny-like aesthetics and graphics. congratulations to everyone who wished Marathon to be dead on arrival, they made it a hero shooter and now i am a firm believer that its going to flop, at the start of its life time at the very least. Maybe it finds its legs a few months down the pipeline.

I saw it immediately, in tha gameplay.. Pistol fire'n EXACTLY like The Last Word &/or Sharpshooter Gunslinger.. tha side dash that EXACTLY mimics a Hunters reload dodge animation, just to start.. You gotta consider tha fact that when PlayStation acquired Bungie, it was reported that Sony wanted access to Bungie's 'tools' to help make other games. ... Maybe this is tha 1st result of that deal.

I think Marathon has to be a genre bending game to even get off the ground, the vast majority of gamers don't like extraction shooters. I have zero hype for that game. Concord looks good to me, it looks to be a more gunplay focused version of overwatch, which I think is interesting to a lot of crucible players. Being a paid game when all the others are F2P might be a big hurdle for them though. The 'Destiny' powers are a real stretch, they are generic archetypes, many others have done them before and after Destiny. The gunslinger character is the only one I'd really say has a true Destiny inspiration.

I wouldn't mind seeing Destiny and Marathon both crash and burn. Watching Bungie screw things up is better than their content.

If Marathon genuinely did shift to Hero Shooter based, it will be maybe the biggest bag fumble of modern gaming. Those words immediately turn off so many players, myself included. How’re you not going to have the customization of a player character the Bungie is known for in a new flagship title??
