I had 48 hours in Thailand, Bangkok so I reached out to some local Thai girls to show me round the crazy city. If you have been to Bangkok you will probably know how wild this place so I was prepared for a mental night, welcome to Thailand!

It slightly annoyed me when the tuk tuk driver charged 100 baht more and the girl just went along with it, she knew you were getting ripped off and didn’t seem to care, I’ve lived in Thailand 9 years and don’t put up with it. On another note “it tastes like a rice crispy” made me 😂

Cheers is chokdee khrup, Soi Cowboy is named after an American who opened a bar there and wore a cowboy hat. Tuk tuks are the dearest way of getting around always agree a price before leaving

That's not why it's called Soi Cowboy. It's called Soi Cowboy because a Vietnam veteran called 'Cowboy' Edwards first opened a bar on that soi in the 1970's and it grew from there.

"Cheers" to a drink is more commonly "Chok Dee" and asking for the cost of something is usually "Tao Rai." Naughty Naughty Girl hit the nail on the head with her comment "Bang Cock" 🤣 The most aptly named capital city in the world.

she said "chon gâew" it is another way of saying "Chok Dee" - "Tao Rai" means "what is the cost?" whereas "gii" means 'what quantity' so "gii baht" means "how many baht" I use your method actually lol

Chok dee is good luck. The term they taught you is the most common for “cheers”. Gao is “glass”

When I asked her about the phrase "Chon Gaew" she laughed and said "Maybe it;s kids today thinking it's cool, but nobody in my life ever used that expression" Apparently "Chok Dee" was the standard toast.

I stayed at that Aira Hotel in February, didn't realise there was a rooftop bar there! Great hotel though, very nice and only about £40? And to say thank you it's Kap un carp (spelt phonetically).

I spent two months in Thailand in 1989. It was 50 baht then which was about 50 cents. We were told to negotiate but I just couldn’t because it was so little money. I was studying opium replacement crops in northern Thailand.

No, that's why it calls Soi Cowboys here is a bit of black history which is the American history of Bangkok there was only one Cowboy - T. G. "Cowboy" Edwards, a retired American airman from the Viet Nam War era who became involved in the "bar business" on a quiet Bangkok soi back in 1977. Cowboy got that nickname for obvious reasons - his 'cowboy' get-up - western shirt, belt buckle, and cowboy hat. His Cowboy Bar was not the first bar on that small soi between Sois 21 and 23 - the seminal Gold Label, Chitra's (the original one), and Loretta's to name a few earlier Nitespots. But it was the one that caught the imagination of the Expat community, including nightlife columnist Bernard Trink from the Bangkok World / Bangkok Post. Bernard Trink's Nightlife news columns became so popular in the '80s and '90's that they were distributed as separate handout supplements at hotel reception desks. What Bernard wrote was Nightlife Gospel for Bangkok and Pattaya for almost 30 years. These newspaper supplements (before the Internet) were folded twice and placed in envelopes by unknowable numbers of Expats, and mailed to the four corners. In these columns, Bernard regularly reviewed those new bars on what had become known locally as "Soi Cowboy". The name stuck - and in today's parlance, 'went viral'. Today, Soi Cowboy is on the map. Google it - find it on Google Earth. It is a Night Entertainment Landmark. Cowboy (the man) however did not ride the crest of this rise in popularity. Getting drunk meant going broke, and going broke meant getting 'divorced', and meant selling the bar. But this was not the end of the world. Cowboy Edwards may have been down, but he was far from out. In short order, he opened another bar in Washington Square (predating Square One). The new bar seemed to start out well, but went belly up shortly afterward - neighboring Washington Square bar owners attest that the reason was, once again, his "drinking up all the profits". But Cowboy wasn't yet ready to give up - not by any stretch of the imagination. He partnered with Grant Francisco, a retired fire chief from the Viet Nam conflagration. They opened the New Cowboy Bar deep in Soi 22. It is still there today. The joint venture between he and Grant was based on a loan from Grant. I don't have to tell you how that went. Grant was strung out financially and had contracted cancer, so he finally gave Cowboy an ultimatum; pay up or leave. Cowboy, also in ill health, soon left Thailand for medical treatment. He died, not in Thailand, shortly afterward. It wasn't much after that, that Grant succumbed to cancer - the bar continuing on in the hands of relatives. Nevertheless, for all his successes and failures, "Cowboy" Edwards, has left an indelible, and very permanent footnote (or two) in the history of Bangkok's Nightlife Scene. Take care and God bless
