The Stranger is a 2022 Australian crime-thriller film written and directed by Thomas M. Wright.
Premise: Two men who meet on a plane and strike up a conversation that turns into friendship. For Henry Teague, worn down by a lifetime of physical labour and crime, this is a dream come true.

This doesn't start off like a review...instead you just do a full summary of the film? To me, that indicates why you probably didn't really like it... The plot is one of the least crucial parts of this film, so if you need a good storyline to enjoy a film, this probably won't be for you. Instead the strengths of the film are in it's atmosphere, cinematography, acting, sound design and imagery. There are many parts of this film that will stay with me for a long time. There is tons of tension in what both characters are actually capable of...just no real plot tension. Sean Harris is DDL-level good in this.

This case was a massive case in Australia. Everyone involved was on edge!! The law enforcement had to play out that they were a mafia group which were needing his confession as a criminal for their organization, and they achieved it!! This was one of the best cases ever solved and this film shoed the case and answer very well!!

This is about the Daniel Morcombe case. I lived in a house right next to where he was taken & the police were over all the time, it really shook the the entire state & it took them so long to figure it out. It's a shame it's adaption sounds a bit hokey.

Wow, sorry you had to go through that. I've seen a lot of very respectful and well-done presentations by True Crime youtubers. That's how I first knew about that poor boy. I am into KZbinrs more and more! They have a level of care and respect that that's been missing from a lot of corporate media.

I think the adaptation was careful not to upset the Morcombe family,who weren’t very happy about a movie being made.

Oh yes, after the 'sting' comment I remember this "Mr Big" (?) operation that's 'used legally' for this cold case. Most probably, the narrative's attention is the controversial nature of this type of undercover work. Haha, Nick: "It's almost trying to be procedural.." That's it right there! ;)

Oh I heard about this real-life "Mr.Big" sting that like Canadian and Australian police have had a lot of success with in getting suspects to confess, under the premise of trying to impress a crime boss or whatever. It's weird and I can't believe it works. Like, why would you tell anyone that? Lol but they do, and they be locking people up. But yeah these filmmakers need to take notes from you guys on how to make a film more engaging!

I enjoyed your review, thank you! I appreciate how you both take your time unpacking the plot, interesting techniques and the impact of these choices on each of you as an audience. As an Australian, I felt compelled to see this film. I enjoyed it, the performances were outstanding, but I do think the slow-burn storytelling relies too heavily on the audience being familiar with the case. I learned an interesting thing about Sean Harris' experience playing Henry Teague. Harris used his time in hotel quarantine to practice his characterisation, building the Henry persona. Because police officers check in daily during the mandatory quarantine, he began acting as Henry when they visited - he said it was very interesting how the officers treated the Henry character *very* differently and this helped him hone his performance.

I’ve always loved cat and mouse stories - there’s something about a Mr. Big covert operation I find very intriguing - I think a better story could be told here maybe , as this was based on a true story. The idea of gaining trust of a sadistic person and then pulling the tables from under that , there’s like a just desert’s quality to it - but what if there was another connection? Building an entire criminal organization in order to gain a confession and build the trust of this person - what if a story could be told here where the culprit is mildly aware of what is going on. It’s pretty intriguing - I can see a good mini series out of this And there’s also a moral dilemma of the operation itself And if it’s even usable in the court of law And the toll it takes on the “good guy” Perhaps even make it more campy and explore the societal repercussions of a fake criminal organization gone too far for the sole purpose of a confession

I remember this case; the real guy was an awkward young geek, not some mysterious weathered gruff dude. Strange. I’ll probably pass. I have very high expectations for “true “ stories and I usually don’t like them, therefore I normally avoid them. Thanks as always for the review! ❤

All the names are changed and this movie isn’t trying to be accurate to the Morcombe story: it’s most likely that the family didn’t want it to be made (don’t know for sure) it’s based on the true story, it doesn’t claim to BE the true story. Watched it last night…it was good

I understood the meaning of the movie to be alot deeper than just the criminal case. I see God's messengers coming at the end of a man's time; trying to get him to repent and forgive himself. John Paul and detective Cross are big give aways on what's the true meaning to grasp. We have all killed the child inside of us to some extent; where did we leave that child?

How bout him inner thigh rubbing mark .and the kid outside alone and him getting scared cuz of the child abduction. Him being arrested asking for a cigarette and standing with his back leaned against the pillar and his one foot up like he was seen in the footage last time the kid was seen by the bus stop . It was good

I do agree that it was lacking in build up in tension it was like a slow burn from beginning to end there was no real explanation as to why he would kill the boy. That whole thing was just left open ended. I mean it never states if he was a predator of some sort and never states if he did it just to do it. I'm completely confused as to why he even does it. It's also disheartening that even as a criminal organization they never stopped to ask the reason at all they just don't want to have that linked to their organization because it makes them look bad. It would be another thing if they handled it but I guess since this was a real person that this is based off of what the real situation that's why they didn't. I also don't like that they revealed it that this whole thing is a sting operation at the very beginning of the movie because the entire time you're just waiting for the other 👟 to drop and for him to be caught which makes the movie kind of not worth watching.Then we're to come to the conclusion of course, since one the guys who was on the search team did raise his hand in the end indicating that he found something, are we just to assume that they arrested him was he put to death was he in prison forever afterward. Was it enough case evidence to convict him? I guess you would only know that if you decided to Google him afterward or if you were familiar with the case but I feel like after watching that long we deserved to know what came up Henry after he was revealed by his confession. The only real moment of tension for me was when Mark's son went hiding from him and he actually went outside. I did feel like something was maybe going to happen to him at that moment and my nightmare was going to be realized through the eyes of Mark, because I would imagine that he could relate to the horrors of what it must be like to consistently worry about a child of yours especially working so closely with someone who he'd suspected that murdered a boy not much older than his own son, yet he was trying to remain calm and not explode on him for leaving the house while not being able to explain to his child why he was so concerned
@phousefilms
@phousefilms Жыл бұрын
Yes! Exactly! If it was hidden that EVERYONE in the criminal organization was a cop or anything, it would have been interesting. We have a shitload of fakeout dream sequences and jump scares, but nothing that engages us as an audience. We don't get much on our "main hero"character, or the murderer Teague, including WHY he killed the kid or whatever. There's nothing that makes it seem that they're going to fail in the case until the very end and even the other undercover guy starting to flub his lines doesn't get any attention or make Teague freak out. It didn't keep my interest and I was waiting for SOMETHING to either be engaging or show that the two were friends, but it just kept its faux artistic slow burn dramatic stuff through the whole damn thing. "Donnie Brasco"was a way better undercover cop story.

I was thinking maybe theyve never dealt with this type of criminal a child murderer who probably raped the kid as well. Most UC sting operation involve A different type of criminal like major drug dealers thats why I think they were bit shook up, well thats how I interpreted it.
