An absolute nightmare as an umpire. Worked a lot of games at that field. Browne & Nichols in Cambridge during Legion season you had a five minute delay for the sun to set.

In Mexico, we played at a field where train tracks entered left center and exited through right center. With attendants opening and closing the gate and sounding a horn when the train was making it's way. All play stopped, fences were opened, then closed, obviously permanent train tracks on a semi-grassed outfield. No lie. Crazy. Play then resumed as if nothing happened.

Like the field in the movie Brewster's Millions.

Played on a field called "Red Hill Bowl" in Hamilton Ontario. There's three diamonds that are a bit close to each other but the fun part is, in the spring if it has been raining out a lot the grass won't get cut because like the name says, it's a bowl and the ground is wet. So what happens is the grass can get too long and balls will get lost all the time. Just a light dinger and instead of a single the batter is getting 3rd or even a run while the fielder is looking for the ball. They had to make a rule that it was a double if took too long to find the ball.

It's a softball field but similar situation to this one: Daly Field in Brighton, MA. It's a shared softball/soccer field, and as a result there is a very short LF, ridiculously large CF, and a normal RF.

One of my sons played on Bill Swift Field at Mullen High School in Denver years ago. About halfway into the outfield, the right foul line aligns with a wall of one of the school buildings. It looks like they actually have a little room to move the field over. Not sure why it's like that.

When I was a kid in the 60s we place local neighborhood games on a near by church lawn. It was long and narrow and as much as possible we set it up as close as we could to the Polo grounds. In exchange we mowed the grass. As we got older we had to move because we were banging balls off the walls of a couple houses.

We played Community College baseball in the middle of the track. Less than 200 ft down the Right Field line. The Left Field line went to about 350 to 360 ft. The track was in play. There was a little curb lining the track. The outfield was was the black iron school fencing (points on top and no padding). This was Bronx Community College. I played catcher/1st base. Defensively, no problem for me. Offensively, I had a ball. I hit to all fields. Worked for me.

Stevens Park Marlboro, MA. Giant arching stonewall in CF with these cool water towers behind it. The wall had a big 305ft spray painted on it. Weirdest bounces off the irregular contours of the stones. LF, in relation to the giant stonewall looming only 300' away, feels like it's a mile away. It's actually about 350'. Then, in RF is an ENORMOUS chainlink fence that protects the 3 decker apartment house only 250' away. As a player from Westborough, it was always one of my favorite fields to play at from ages 13 to 18. Always wanted to hit one over that big wall in CF but I think it got in my head and I just never squared one up. Take a look Matt! Im pretty sure its still there.

Cobbs Hill field 1 Rochester Ny. Had a tree on the left field line. Clearly growing in foul territory. However some branches went over to fair territory. No matter where you hit the tree it was a ground rule double. Even the trunk which was clearly foul. Also the outfield was down hill. If you sat on the bench and looked out to center. You couldn’t see his legs

Let the trees play some baseball man! This left outfielder tree looks like a stud!

A couple weird vintage ones that I know of are at Mansker's Station north of Nashville, the Hermitage in Nashville, Bicentennial Mall in downtown Nashville, and the VBB field at the Ohio Village in Columbus, near the old Crew stadium. Lots of trees in play, lots of hills, lots of fun playing vintage base ball. The most boring fields are just open, flat pastures where there are no obstacles or anything to get in the way.

You reminded me of a Sam Fuld (i think) story, one of the teams he played for had no walls, and didn't get them until after he graduated. The coach's supposed reasoning was that Fuld could chase the ball down enough to get more outs then if they had walls. I can't find a source, just remember them telling it on TV one time.

I played for the Red Sox in 1916, and that year we played in the World Series at Braves Field. There were Fir trees planted just outside the centerfield fence to block the smoke from the train out there.

@@tomdavis6371 125 next week. I’m afraid not, but my great-grandson plays for the University of Maryland and can hit just about any pitch equally well.

Our high school field had a pretty straight outfield fence. Almost a A mirror of what you're showing but kind of different We were 365 down the left field line and I did get one dinger over that fence which was on top of a hill so we had a hill in our outfield, and were 515 ft down the right field line and it was just a big triangle. Our first baseman, Dave Smith hit a home run into the 515 ft corner once, and I remember that ball just kept going and going and going it was so far away. See you later got a scholarship to and played with Randy Johnson, Mark McGwire, and Jack del Rio.

What were the ground rules behind home plate? Seems like there is more ground to cover on the first base side, to the home plate side of the dugout.

The old Texas Longhorns field had a cliff in LF that was in play. Players would have to run up a path to get balls off the top of the cliff.

When you started talking about the playground and the tree play, I was like “ok Matt haha you got us good joke” and thought you were going to say it was just a practice field or something. Idk how this is even allowed ha!

How many times over the season do windows get busted out on the Townhouse?
@DumbAssSpeakingWithMansVoice Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. They must have steel bars protecting the glass.
@RobKandell Жыл бұрын
I do hope those windows are made of hockey glass. Putting a good athlete with little experience in LF is probably the best move. He doesn’t know what to expect, but at least he knows it. :-)

I would consider this field both a curse and a blessing. Just wondering if the kid on the swing set touches the ball, how is that called? I’d like to hear some of the strangest things that got called

Starting at 0:40 of the video, there is another field to the right which looks relatively normal. It's too bad your team couldn't use that field instead. Or maybe not: you and your team would have missed out on a unique experience. And you wouldn't have made this video!
