After a week 1 game to open up the 2000 NFL season between the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts, Chiefs head coach Gunther Cunningham announced to the team that he was contemplating resigning and stepping down as the team's head coach, even going as far as talking with his wife on the issue until 1 AM. And the end result was a bizarre saga that made no sense whatsoever that summed up Gunther Cunningham's disastrous tenure with the team quite well. This is the story behind the 2000 Chiefs, and what might be the dumbest coaching controversy they've had

I now use "before we get into this, we need to give it some context" whenever I am confronted by an angry girlfriend, friend, business associate, or govt official. It's a great way to have first ball in a confrontation. It's an advantage.

How the Chiefs fired Gunther after the season was really crappy... he was in his office at Arrowhead when he saw on the internet the Chiefs hired Dick Vermeil to replace him... before the team actually told him.
@bkjbearcat78
@bkjbearcat78 Жыл бұрын
I remember that. He came in the office around 4:30am or 5 and when he saw the reports he just cleaned up his office and went home. He later said he was the only person there at the time.

This unofficial JG9 historian will remind everyone that as weak of a move as Cunningham made here, that's not even the most egregious lie that a Chiefs head coach told, as JG9 made a video about Frank Gansz being a pathological liar. And yeah, he went 8-22-1 and is not missed in the Chiefs community.

Marty Schottenheimer, Gunther Cunningham, Dick Vermeil. The Chiefs had a 17-year history of hiring coaches who could be emotional wrecks.

Marty (a real hero of mine, BTW) could be a bit explosive when things went wrong, and sometimes when things went right - remember Danielson throwing a half-blind touchdown pass, and Marty went APESHIT over it? - but emotional wreck? My vote is - close but no cigar.

Gunther Cunningham feels obscure when compared with the other coaches in Chiefs franchise history and to me he feels like poor man’s Marty Schottenheimer since they both coached the defense. Chris Berman used a particular accent when mentioning his name on ESPN.

I don't know... I feel like we've all had those kinds of moments.. Crises of confidence or faith. Obviously, Cunningham wasn't a great head coach, and maybe he didn't handle this well, but I can kind of feel for him here given the circumstances.
@eugenedenbrook322

I agree. That in no way goes against JG9's premise; I simply feel that letdown, that despair. No, he didn't seem to handle it right, but I've been there (not in NFL, of course)

Say what you will about Gunther - as a lifelong chiefs fan, we ALWAYS watched those painful games with Gunther just to lip read what he was screaming from the sidelines. I think that mad man did like ten lines of *COLA* and stuck a beehive in his pants before every game. Usually you didn’t even have to lip read with him, you could literally hear him in the background audio from the broadcaster box seats

I'm sorry, but I'll be the opposing voice. He wanted to win very badly, not just for the normal reasons a head coach does, but to win for D. Thomas, and when it didn't happen...well...he's still a human. Not a robot. He probably DID break a bit. Maybe he could have handled it better, but I think all of that is rather understandable. Yup, this deserved a video, but I don't think it deserves any vitriol. There are other, better reasons why he didn't last. This shouldn't be one of them.

How about George Allen’s return to the Rams in 1978?

You mean the one that didn't even last through preseason because there was a mass team revolt, revealing how both NFL players and society had changed drastically in just a decade after ten years earlier when Allen was fired from the Rams, his players threatened to quit if he wasn't brought back? That return?
