Another crazy expansion story: In 1979 the Oilers traded two picks (not exactly sure which ones) to the North Stars to re-acquire Dave Semenko. In that trade saw Minnesota get two picks, one of them ended up becoming Neal Broten who put almost 1000 points. The Oilers acquired Semenko and a draft pick. With that pick, the Oilers selected none other than Mark Messier! Two future NHL superstars involved in a trade surrounding an enforcer.

The Savard situation gets even stranger than that considering Montreal had the first overall pick in 1980, Savard was from Montreal and considered a for the first overall pick given the French connection, however Montreal stunned the hockey world by taking Doug Wickenheiser, and the rest is history as they say.. Of course 10 years later Savard was traded to the Habs for Chris Chelios and a 2nd round pick, only to be resigned by the Hawks as a UFA to finish out his career.

The San Jose dispersal/expansion meant that the Sharks effectively reactivated the franchise of the Seals/Barons who were merged with Minnesota in the 70's. They are thus spiritually a continuation of the original California Seals franchise from the 67 expansion and not a new franchise. Technically!
@estellegrignon2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, the Seals had been the only team ever to wear teal up until the Sharks came to the league. I do believe the (now Dallas) Stars own the historic logos and look of the Seals the same way the Hurricanes can wear the Whalers jersey whenever they feel like it, though that guess 100% comes from playing EA NHL 06 with the Stars and make them wear those old school looks
@1bert7192 жыл бұрын
@@estellegrignon It's probably a murky legal quibble, and no one wants to claim the dubious Seals/Barons legacy as there own. Similar to New Jerseys lack of Scouts/Rockies throwbacks.
@estellegrignon2 жыл бұрын
@@1bert719 the Rockies is an interesting case actually. On one end, the Avalanche has been going back to the Rockies logo on their alternate jerseys for a while. On the other, when Adidas took over in 2017, the Devils updated their jersey a bit and changed the striping on the arm: the team explicitly said that the new striping pattern was the same as the Rockies' one as an hommage. So it seems like both teams are paying tribute to the Rockies in some small way, though the Devils are the ones who own the Scouts/Rockies franchise records and numbers
@1bert7192 жыл бұрын
@@estellegrignon Colorado's alternate is based on the state flag, though clearly a homage. There must be some agreement in place as (for example) the current Winnipeg 3rd is a throwback to a design owned by the Coyotes. I wonder if the rights ultimately belong to the NHL who own the franchising rights to every team.

Great video. I remember that sj/min draft. Lmao. And I remember that sj, ott and tb got to pick players from Ana and fla after they had their draft. Although there were only like 3 players taken. It was to help those 3 teams cuz they were struggling and new. But it was still weird. Lol. Keep up the good work.

The dispersal draft was pretty crazy! One player San Jose got from that was Arturs Irbe! Irbe was drafted by Minnesota but never played a game for them would go to the Sharks and would become their number one goalie for a few years! It was only fitting Irbe would end up in Dallas at the end of is tenure with the Sharks!

The Gunds owned the Cleveland Barons (previously the Golden Seals) and had merged them with the North Stars. The dispersal draft effectively split the two teams apart again. It's not as crazy as it looks in hindsight.

Please....the Preds didn't get Weber until the 2003 NHL Draft...in the 2nd round...after Suter and Klein. They didn't start with bonafide studs ffs. Their "star" at the time of their inaugural season in 1998 was Sergei Krivokrasov for example. To add to that...they had to trade up to #2 to get David Legwand as well. 🙄😒 The Vegas draft year, however, was unlike any other in terms of quality skill, and more importantly, ASSETS...like a future HOF netminder, former 30 goal scorer, and more. Preds didn't have quality players at least until almost a decade later via acquisitions or free agency...Kariya, Dumont, Arnott, Sullivan, etc...then would lose their captain, Timonen, as well as Vokoun, Hartnell, Kariya and others due the fire sale scare in 2007-08. Nevermind a young KHL-bound Radulov that blew them off for years until 2012...losing him soonafter as well as watching Suter fk off in free agency for nothing...thankfully he was replaced by a much better Roman Josi. Now I worry about that scenario with Filip Forsberg at the moment.
