I just like these old broadcasting controversy videos because it shows how different the TV landscape was back then. And another 1984 broadcasting video of yours I liked was the Seahawks/Browns in week 1, which had to be played on Labor Day afternoon because King County officials were boneheaded in not checking out Mariners/Seahawks conflicts. As such only certain stations could broadcast that game.

At the time (going through videos about the subject which are available here and were recorded closed-circuit from the affiliate-only feeds), NBC was in the process of getting all their affiliates off the landlines and receiving the network feed onto satellite, so an issue like this is definitely plausible. Being an engineer in 1984 was not an easy job as you had to switch your entire setup from the landline and install satellites and that equipment. It didn't help that WSLS was known at the time for not having the best staff in the industry entirely, as at the time, the station was known for hiring on-air and off-air personnel who had issues with the abuse of certain substances (sometimes showing on-air), along with heavy and union-involved conflict between staff and management. It wasn't until the 2000s that WSLS was able to really rise above their old reputation in the market altogether. It's honestly a shock that something like this didn't occur more often on-air for channel 10.

Over in New York City, WNBC-TV (channel 4) aired Patriots-Colts game at 1PM and Jets-Oilers game at 4PM, and they didn’t screwed up, but it’s the right game, but they’re not showing the Bengals-Seahawks game due to blackout rules.

WNBC-TV (channel 4) in New York City did aired the New England Patriots game at 1PM and then the New York Jets at 4PM, but not the Cincinnati Bengals game due to blackout rules over at WNBC-TV. And that would be a happy ending. Here is what it aired on channel 4. At 1PM, the New England Patriots played against the Indianapolis Colts, and at 4PM, the New York Jets played against the Houston Oilers, but not to air the Cincinnati Bengals played against the Seattle Seahawks, and that would be the right decision to aired two local teams played.

This is very similar to what happened 2 years later in the Fargo ND area during ESPN's first year covering the NHL. Due to how close they were to Minneapolis, the area's de facto NHL team was the North Stars who were very popular & they were playing Edmonton (who were in the peak of their 1980's dynasty) in the second game of a doubleheader (the first game which everyone around the country got was Quebec taking on the Islanders). However, instead of getting North Stars-Edmonton, people in Fargo got the Blackhawks taking on Calgary mainly because Colonial Telephone, the main cable provider in the area at the time forgot to pick up the national feed from ESPN & instead picked up the Sports Channel Chicago feed. As for how the North Stars-Edmonton turned out, it ended 3-1 to Edmonton with Mark Messier scoring twice & Gretzky scoring an empty net goal. Then for Chicago-Calgary it ended in a 4-4 tie after OT (this was back in the days before the shootout was used).

Did anyone in management at WSLS notice? I mean owning a TV station was the only job where you literally could see what's going on at work from your home. Why didn't the station manager or anyone else correct the error right away?

WSLS management should have known about the problem right away because most likely the station got a flood of phone calls as soon as the wrong game started airing.

The technicians that botched their assignment probably had one additional thing to give thanks for that Thanksgiving due to the fact both the game they were supposed to air and the one they did proved to be duds, because if the Patriots-Colts one was a close one after that goof-up they probably would have been looking for another job.

I remember the entire 1 o’clock game. They would say coming up? Either this game or that game? And it sucked when it wasn’t the game you were hoping for. Especially if it was regional? And they showed some BS across the country I didn’t care about!

This game was most likely on because in this area the local team was the Baltimore Colts as the AFC team, and they moved to Indianapolis the year prior. And still a big following for the colts in this area.

Just for arguments sake, the Red Sox single-A affiliate plays in Salem nearby. So a NewEngland connection exists today with this area.

I showed up at an area high school expecting to see the end of a suspended game. Apparently the information I obtained was premature. My reaction upon arrival led to police being called and charging me with disorderly conduct. Yeah, I wasn't happy.

Even with both Patriots/Colts and Seahawks/Bengals being blowouts, WSLS' engineers screwed up. Those engineers made their program manager look bad. I'm now wondering if WTVT and what's once again WFLA-TV (then WXFL due to FCC rules regarding radio and TV stations being separated) had any issues with land feeds and satellite feeds for NFL telecasts here in Tampa Bay.
