Wonderful hearing the voice of Charlie Jones again. Also, heads-up play by the player making the fair catch. It's funny that none of the players knew what to do. The coaches may or may not have known what to do. That's kind of funny, considering that most coaches think they know how to officiate better than the officials. It's also interesting that the Colts chose Allegre to take the kick, rather than Biasucci, because he had the better leg. Very few modern-day kickers would have any problem with that distance. Sick!

Ranks up there with the "1 point safety" for rare.
@andrew7taylor8 жыл бұрын
That's even more rare. For a fair-catch kick you need less than 30 seconds left either a, in the half when the opponent kicks off or punts, or b, in the game if score is within 3. You also need the distance of course, but it's got reasonable chance. Four times since 2005. For a one point safety, you need the defense care enough to block the xp, someone make an effort to make the block, then someone dumb enough to touch the ball and run it back into their own endzone even though if they didn't touch it it would be play over, dead ball. That's only happened twice in the history of college football.
@grovergarver31047 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, this free kick attempt does NOT have to be in the last 30 seconds. As a practical matter, you'd likely only attempt this very late in a half, but you do have the option of trying it whenever you make a fair catch or are awarded a fair catch.
@andrew7taylor7 жыл бұрын
Grover Garver Of course it does not have to be in the last 30 seconds by rule, but it doesn't make any sense any other way. You'd run a play from scrimmage otherwise, wouldn't you?
@rogerjrusa7 жыл бұрын
Zoomer30 how does a 1-point safety happen? Let me guess: PAT is blocked, player attempts to run it out of end zone, runs back into end zone, is tackled?
@grovergarver31047 жыл бұрын
A safety on a PAT is no different than a safety on any other play. A team must be responsible for the ball going into it's own endzone and then be either be tackled there, have the ball go out of bounds there, or fall on the ball there. The only difference between a safety on a PAT and a safety on a regular play, is that a safety on a PAT is worth 1 point.

It is indeed incredibly rare. The last successful one was made in the 60s, with the most recent one was failed by the 49ers in 2015. Only about 1 in 4 are made, and the require very particular circumstances to be viable. (End of half, no time to run the ball, and within a reasonable distance. In second half, only done when down by 3 or less points)
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын
It's one of those obscure rules that no one ever thinks of, just like being able to drop kick the ball anywhere in the field to score 3 points, yes, exactly like rugby. Just like how no one knows that it IS possible to score 1 point in the game. If a situation occurs that would be declared a safety in normal play during an extra point attempt, then the team that made the safety gets one point. That means, in some insane chance, that a extra point can be blocked, run back by the defense nearly 80 yards away, fumbled, and touched by the kicking team as it leaves out the back, making a 1-6 score possible. More likely, but still improbable would be a two point attempt that gets intercepted, brought out of the endzone, then forced back into the endzone would award 1 point to the kicking team.

This is the reason that kickers bounce the ball on the ground first, on onside kicks. If they just kick it straight up, the receiving team could call a fair catch and get a free kick from where they fielded it. Most pooch kicks also hit the ground first, before they are fielded, to avoid the free kick rule.
@Cubroncs038 жыл бұрын
Except that essentially no kickers actually bounce the ball before kicking it in any situation anymore.

In the NFL, If the receiving team does NOT touch the kick, it goes back to the line of scrimmage. If the receiving team does touch it, it becomes a live ball and it's next put in play wherever the play ends. In high school ball, if the kick misses, it is EXACTLY the same as a kickoff. In college ball, this play is not allowed.
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын

It's actually one of the oldest surviving rules in football. It stems from a time when you were allowed to catch the ball ONLY from a kick. Even an early version of soccer had it. Australian football elaborated it into a major feature, and allows it even from a teammate's kick.

I'm a football newbie and I have a few questions. 1. @1:21 Is it just a failed onside kick from the red team? 2. After making the fair catch, does the team have to "call" a fair catch kick, like telling the referee that they are doing this? We know that the defense team needs to be 10 yards back when there is a fair catch kick. What happens if the defense team is 10 yards back, and then the kicking team decides to not kick it (like to run it maybe)
@whaduzitmatr8 жыл бұрын
+shane030716 they have to verbally tell the official they are doing the free kick and they are not allowed to run or pass on the free kick play. I assume if they try to do so it would be a penalty
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын
1. It was a pooch kick, and it is the exact reason why squib kicks are kicked to the ground and not into the air. 2. After the fair catch, the fair catch kick may be requested. The kicking team must kick the ball, either a drop kick, or a place kick. You can't advance a free kick. It would likely be a 10 yard illegal procedure penalty.

@DevSolar8 жыл бұрын
Timing. He's training to kick the ball between the uprights after those few steps day in, day out. Kickoffs, with the running start, don't require that kind of precision, and thus are usually not practiced that way. He went with what he was comfortable with. If he'd taken the running start and missed, the question would be the other way around...
@mark2248 жыл бұрын
DevSolar If your options are: accurate but no chance at being long enough or long enough but a greater chance of going too far left or right you'd pick the former?
@DevSolar8 жыл бұрын
mark224 That is not what I wanted to say. He's supposed to kick the ball between the uprights. That's what he's practiced thousands of times using that *exact* procedure, which *might* give the necessary range anyway. He *could* instead try to kick the ball between the uprights with a running start, which *might* give him more range, but is something he most likely *never* practiced before. He went for the conservative option, and is now blamed for it. Had he taken the running start and missed, he'd have been blamed for *not* taking the conservative option.

Mike Dilullo If you were to look at the American Revolutionary Soldier uniforms, the current Navy, Silver, White and Red uniforms the Patriots wear, actually look similar to those dress uniforms. A lot of teams do need to go back to their original uniforms. The Bills finally did, and it's a handsome improvement. The Rams are working on going back to the '67 fearsome foursome look in 2019, the Chargers need to permanently go back to the powder blues with the helmet digits, the Broncos need to go back to the baby blue and orange uniforms of the Elway years and the Texans need to become the Oilers. The Eagles need the Kelly greens for sure. I'm not sure what I'd do with Seattle. I like their home uniforms of today and the Zorn years, but they looked too much like the Lions away. their gray always are pretty good though. The Jaguars have always been subpar. A Florida team wearing black? I don't even want to think about the Browns...

The most remarkable thing is that no one knew what to do. Snap or no snap? On the line or ten yds deep? Drop a man back for a possible run back? - total confusion - in today's NFL, where everything is strategized to the smallest detail, even tho this is the least common play after the drop kick the players on both sides would know exactly what to do and where to be - not sure that's good or bad - but it sure is different
@pears00949 жыл бұрын
+mashermac55 Too be honest, it happened again (a Fair-Catch/Free-Kick) a couple of years ago, and the players acted in a similar manner... So your hypothesis unfortunately didn't/doesn't really pan out... (I myself thought similar to your assessment, that with all the strategizing in todays NFL they WOULD know what to do, but to no avail...) Not really a play you practice or talk about too much in training Camp and Pre-Season I guess... I'm sure many of the players and fans had never even head of this play before either... I know I hadn't until I saw unfold and then went back and did some research on the "Fair-Catch/Free-Kick"...
@rockintetster5 жыл бұрын
Something that is almost always forgotten in football is that after every fair catch on a punt or kickoff, the receiving team has TWO options; 1) a set of four downs to run plays OR 2) a free place kick to attempt a field goal from the spot of the fair catch. Nearly all of the time, the receiving team elects the first option- to run a set of downs. The second option, the free place kick, is rarely exercised because it is only advantageous when ALL of the following circumstances are present; 1) There is realistically time for only one play on the clock. 2) The team is in field goal range. 3) A filed goal would be a meaningful score. This is one of those rare situations. There is nothing to loose for the Colts by missing the field goal- i.e.- they don’t care about giving the Patriots good field position because there is no time left.

He shouldn't even have fielded it if he didn't think he could run it back for a score. Since 1974 in the NFL, if a FG attempt failed to score and was not played by the receiving team, they scrimmaged from the previous spot, which in this case would've been the other team's 49 yard line. No time would've run off the period clock. Prior to 1974, they'd have had to field the free kick, because the kicking team could recover just as for a kickoff or free kick from a safety. In Federation rules it's still just like any other kick, no "missed FG" rule.

I'm not sure what the rules on this play were back then. But as of now, you're correct about where the ball would be placed. However, the clock starts on the KICK on this play.

It's not a field goal, it's a free kick. The ball is live as soon as it hits the boot.

With the recent rule change impacting on-side kicks, I wonder how this might apply. The kicking team (wanting an onside kick) pops it in the air and the receiving time calls a fair catch.... it would seem given where the kick off now takes place, the receiving team that made the fair catch has a great chance to put more points on the board....

Kickers in the 80's were idiots. This is the 3rd fair catch/free kick from the 80's that I have watched, and everyone of them only takes their normal 2 steps before kicking. And every time, it's been well short. Legally, they can take as many steps as they want, meaning that they can take a running start, before kicking, like they would during a kickoff.
@DaPimpinBlob7 жыл бұрын
Alex H ya but to take a longer run up means you're coming at the ball more straight on when you kick it. When you have a kicking tee that's fine but when someone is holding the ball, the kicker is going to end up kicking the guys hand/arm

Saw a free kick tried at a Redskins game under George Allen when I was a kid. (I think it was 1974) It was after receiving a punt with a fair catch on about our own 48 yard line just before halftime. But the Ref screwed up the rules! He wouldnt allow Kurt Knight a holder (legal) nor to dig his heel into the turf (illegal) to make a makeshift kicking tee (illegal). Kurt didn't know how to drop-kick (legal), so he just laid the ball flat on ground. He took a running start and kicked it like a normal kickoff and actually elevated the ball quite nicely - like a low line-drive - it looked more like a frisbee. Never getting higher than maybe 30 feet off the ground but ln a straight line. It landed below the goal post. Following the game it was mentioned on the radio that a player could have held the ball.

Very alert of the late, great Charlie Jones to call this before the Colts themselves did. I think this was a tad more common before 1974, when the goalposts were moved from the goal line to behind the end zone. It's also more common on punts than kickoffs, which are rarely fair caught at all, much less within potential field goal range. And it only seems to happen in the final moments of the second or fourth quarter. The Bears won in Green Bay with one of these free kick FGs in 1968.

I saw a player actually walk over to a cooler with cup in hand to get his own drink, I would be surprised if that's happened in the last 15 years. Today's players see a girl walking toward them with a squirt bottle and open their mouths like a baby bird. If he doesn't need a drink he will just shake his head meaning no or act like he doesn't see her.

From the 2016 rulebook: "ARTICLE 4. PUTTING BALL IN PLAY AFTER FAIR CATCH. After a fair catch is made, or is awarded as the result of faircatch interference, the receiving team has the option of putting the ball in play by either a: (a) fair-catch kick (drop kick or placekick without a tee) from the spot of the catch (or the succeeding spot after enforcement of any applicable penalties) (3-10 and 11-4-3)"

It still is, and will likely never leave. It is a fun and quirky play, and recieves just enough use (a couple attempts a decade) to stay in, while staying rare enough that the rules aren't ever changed or re balanced.

Football has some of the most bizarre, fun rules!
@bjdon9910 жыл бұрын
I remember watching this game. It's a strange rule. I am surprised with today's kickers that can boot the ball 70 yds if nobody is trying to block this, that this isn't used when punts are fair caught with 20 seconds left in the half. A kick from your opponents' 40 yd line is easily makeable
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын
Asking for a kicker to boot it from the 40 is a pretty tall order. Maybe if the ball was round or someone figured out a way to kick it with a spiral, otherwise it'd be better to try to push the short field to the opposite 40 and make a try from there.
@bunpeishiratori58496 жыл бұрын
The problem is, you can't use a tee. If you could, sure, they could easily make a kick from their own 40. But since you have to use a holder, it would be like making a 70-yard field goal. Even without a rush and being able to "line drive" the kick, that's too much to ask. Maybe a 65-yarder, which would mean from your own 45.
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын
Bunpei Shiratori no. The holder can hold it directly where the fair catch was caught.
@bunpeishiratori58496 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I'm saying. If you fair catch it at your own 40, the holder puts it down at the 40, which means it's 60 yards to the goal line and ten more yards to the goal post. That'd be a 70-yard kick off the ground. Pretty close to impossible.
@Mostlyharmless19856 жыл бұрын
Bunpei Shiratori I think there are some leadfoots capable of getting distance. I think it’s less likely since most kickers are soccer style now a Days. Maybe an accomplished straight through kicker could get it off his toe with perfect rapport with his punter. My thought is why not take advantage of the confusion and make it an onside kick, it might be worth it in 2 minute situations...
