Riverfront Stadium hosted its first Cincinnati Bengals game on Saturday, August 8, 1970, when the Bengals took on the Washington Redskins in a preseason game. The only problem? The first game was a disaster, as there were seats of the stadium that were not ready, and did not exist, meaning that some fans who had tickets to the game were not let in because their seats were imaginary. This is the story behind the awful opening to Riverfront Stadium and the 1970 Bengals

There were five Carpenters song references. At 8:28, Rainy Days and Mondays. At 10:18, A Two-fer: We've Only Just Begun followed by It's Gonna Take Some Time. At 13:47, On Top of the World. And at 14:04, Hurting Each Other. Meanwhile, where was Bengals defensive lineman Ron Carpenter?

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following: 1. The strange-looking resolution to a dispute between the Orioles and Colts that same year. 2. The ticketing fiasco at the Bengals first home playoff game at Riverfront in 1981. For that matter, you made a video about a regular season game that year in which the Bengals hosted the Steelers. In that game Bengals Center Bob Johnson found a lucky penny that turned around that game and season. I just wonder if that penny was left by the ironworkers or carpenters.

Nearby Miami of Ohio did the same thing for a football game with Marshall in 1997. Sold out with Randy Moss coming to town. They sold 32 rows of tickets in a section with 30 rows. Created a disaster in the bleachers. One of the worst college football experiences I've ever had in a full house environment. Traffic backed up to the interstate (20 miles), no parking within a mile of the 25,000 seat stadium, just a fiasco

Frankly, that was a logistical nightmare, with all those seats taken out to remove the backfield wall and with the removal of the Astroturf and replacement with natural grass. Granted, Riverfront Stadium had to be reconfigured to accommodate the construction of the new baseball stadium following the referendum. However, in retrospect, I would have proposed simply growing Riverfront Stadium vertically by adding two or three more levels in the full circle. That may have increased the seating capacity to at least 65,000-in line with the two new stadiums. The removal of the luxury boxes could have aided in that regard. Besides, the case can be made that the two new stadiums have not aided either the Bengals or the Redlegs. The City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County would have been better served leaving well enough alone by keeping Riverfront Stadium and authorizing the vertical expansion.

Fun fact: The Reds' 1970 opener at Riverfront occurred on June 30, roughly five weeks before the Bengals' debut. Due to delays in final construction of Riverfront, the Reds began the season playing their home schedule at Crosley Field, remaining there until June 24. (In between the two tenants' openers, Riverfront hosted the MLB All-Star Game on July 13.)

Don't think you can put this on Bengals. More of city, and the cry baby ass unions in Cincinnati. More to this story if u dig deeper, goes back to contracts by unions on offical work done on stadium originally. Carpenter's union was butt hurt before this even happened, and this was a " we'll show them" type B's. When judge orders them back to work, they all had to to burn so they used it, after judge orders them back to work. Keep digging my boy, you will find the truth and reasons.

As someone who lives in Seattle, we had the Kingdome from 1976-2000 as our multipurpose stadium. At one point in the late 70's & early 80's the Kingdome was home to 4 teams & 4 different sports as the Seahawks, Mariners, Sonics & Sounders all played there. One of my uncles worked on the field/seat conversion at the Kingdome at that time and he told me that it was quite easy to transition the field from football to soccer. However transitioning the field from football to baseball and transitioning any of the 3 sports to a basketball arena was super difficult because it required all of the seats along what was the 3rd & 1st base lines to be folded in so that basketball bleachers could be wheeled in & it also required the majority of seats in the upper deck to tarped off, although in 1979 & 1980 the Sonics left those seats open so that they could set the all time NBA playoff attendance record.

@@Schneltor because they feared that people wouldn't buy tickets up there due to the view being so far away from the court (this was before the Jumbotron was invented) . It also wouldn't look good to have empty seats if the Sonics were on national TV, even though the majority of nationally televised games on CBS were shown on tape delay at the time. My uncle said the only reason why those seats were left open for the 1979 & 1980 playoff runs besides to break the all time NBA playoff attendance record was because there was so much demand for tickets that people would pay anything to watch the Sonics.

I'm pretty sure that the biggest disaster in Riverfront Stadium history was when eleven fans were crushed to death and another twenty-six fans suffered non-fatal injuries, when stadium employees left everyone out in the frigid cold until shortly before the show was to start and then only opened two glass doors to let everyone in, including the general admission, first-come, first-seated, ticket holders for The Who's December 23, 1979, concert - the band's first American tour since 1976, and its first without original drummer Keith Moon, who passed away that September.

The way the old Vet in Philly worked was the extra seats were in the outfield from right to left which were folded up during baseball. They worked like your typical high school gym bleachers. In fact, when they removed the scoreboards from the outfield and relied on "Phanavision" which was all the way at the top in center field, they pulled a few of the football seats out for baseball. I would think that Riverfront and Three Rivers would work the same but apparently not.

Hi -- I love your videos, but I have a request. Your audio levels on most all of your videos are such that, in order to understand your speaking voice, the volume has to be turned way up. I'm talking about to the point where, when KZbin inserts a commercial, my window frames start to rattle and I get concerned that people in the other apartments here will call in a noise complaint. It's that big of a source volume difference. Please clean up your source volume and bring it up to a level where the commercials we are forced to endure don't boom out at illegal and unwarranted levels. It just seems to me that you should be able to hear the content, and not be forced to listen in a room that's soundproofed to the outside, or need to ride the volume control while watching a video to the extent that you can't let your attention wander from the screen for even a moment, lest you miss the warning that an ad is coming and rush to mute it. The Super Bowl XLV disaster noted at the beginning was mainly the result of the Dallas-Fort Worth area the week before the game being hit with the worst ice storm in 50+ years and DFW not having the proper equipment to get everything up and running quickly. That likely resulted in workers doing construction on seat expansion being unable to get to work in many cases, causing the disaster that happened.

I've been doing reading on Riverfront's history...from what I understand, the football seating was always at reduced capacity in preseason and the first month of the season, because of the baseball-to-football conversion. If you seen old Bengals games at Riverfront pre-mid 1990s, the field had no midfield logo nor logos/colors in the end zones.

The surface that he got hurt on was the fourth turf that the Vet installed in 1988 and it was poorly installed. It was 3x more harder than the three previous surfaces that the Vet had. The fifth turf that was installed back in 1996 was bad as the fourth one. The first three surfaces was just like any other turf in the league. No wonder why Ron Jaworski played consecutive games with the Eagles and Herman Edwards never missed a game during his time with the Eagles. It was mainly because the surface they played on wasn't bad as the 1988 and 1996 turfs. The Vet reinstalled the turf in 1977 and during the 1982 strike. The Vet reinstalled the third turf during the strike because it gotten worn out too quickly due to the Eagles and Phillies being in the postseason during the turf lifetime from 1977-1982.

And when it "opened" for the first exhibition (sorry, pre-season) game vs. the Giants, then-Schaefer Stadium still had some bugs to be worked out, mainly with parking and traffic flow (major backups on U.S. Route 1 that left thousands sitting in traffic for hours) and the bathrooms (toilets that couldn't flush or overflowed; a "super flush" had to be done at a later time).

Field level boxes on first-base side at Riverfront Stadium were stationary. The ones on third base side moved to left field and were parallel to its counterpart for tackle football. The stands that probably weren't set up were at each end (right field and third base side) that connected both boxes and were stored under back rows of lower deck. Third base camera on Reds telecasts always showed those stands in right field that were never used for baseball games.

Kind of reminds of the 1969 Seattle Pilots inaugural home opener (and only season) at Sicks Seattle Stadium, which was supposed to temporary venue. At the home opener many seat were not completed due to Seattle rain and construction costs, and fans would not enter until the middle of the game. The seats were completed near the middle of the season and attendance was not that satisfactory, and most of those "completed" seats were not filled.
