I forgot how just odd this one was: North Stars draft Guy Lafleur from the Nordiques then trade him back. Weird since Minnesota was drafting players in the 1991 draft when San Jose entered the league; they didn't want anyone from Quebec so drafted a retired player; traded him back because Lafleur couldn't work the front office position the Nordiques had offered; received a player already confirmed as leaving the league to play in Europe.

Benning may go down in history as the worst GM the Canucks have ever had. As a Canucks fan his entire tenure had me fuming.

Not just in Canucks history but in the whole damn league. Benning is close to Milbury levels of outright incompetence. I rarely wish failure on someone but I hope to never hear him get another job at the NHL level. No fanbase deserves to suffer his idiocy the way we did.

You're forgetting the STRANGEST trade EVER in NHL History. Ton 'Bussey' Martin was traded for a bus. That';s right. a player was traded for a vehicle. Off google itself: Tom Martin holds one distinction that no one in the NHL, and maybe the entire sports world, could claim about his playing days. Martin, who was a fourth-round draft pick by the Winnipeg Jets in 1982, was traded for a bus -- a used bus.

Also a funny fact that you didn't mention about the Toffoli trade is the fact the next season with the lost of Toffoli the Canucks misses the playoffs due to lack of depth scoring, but the teams who signs him (habs) ended up in the finals and he was a big part of it. I was sad when he got traded in 2022, but we ended up with Mesar, Heinneman and Volokhin, which is pretty good asset management, compared to the Bennings era xD
@jonmendelson11049 ай бұрын
7:59 I've been saying it for awhile. The Canucks and Pettersson should publicly "struggle to come to terms on a deal", Pettersson should "demand a trade", and then the Canucks should trade the defenseman Elias Pettersson they have in their system for the center's price.

The Ekman-Larsson trade didn’t make sense from the very start. Sure, they traded away bad contracts for him. They could have just waited a year because all of those contracts were about to expire. Instead, they took on Ekman-Larsson’s long term contract that would eat up cap space for years. Even longer now that he’s been bought out

I might not be understanding this correctly, but I believe the way waivers used to work back in the day was that the team claiming a player had to pay the previous team a dollar. Rather than getting a player for nothing, it cost $1. I don't know if that's really a "trade" so much as a waiver claim.
@Actionronnie7 ай бұрын
It was actually a trade for future considerations, which usually means you just take him and the trade is forgotten. I guess they just paid a dollar later to complete it. I guess the Jets were hoping the Ducks or Panthers would take him in the ex draft but didn't. Waiver draft was still 3 months away from when he was traded. Having watched draper and the Jets in that era, there was nothing memorable about him. People forget he also started in the minors with Detroit as well. He just got lucky.

I know you've covered it in another horrible trades video, but it pisses me off so much that I'll mention it again. The whole Parise and Suter fiasco. They paid them each almost as much as Ovechkin was getting at the time, AND the eventual buyout basically ruined The Wilds chance at a Cup for 20 years. They're so far in cap debt, that they have the cost of TWO superstars that could be playing with Kaprizov and Boldy hanging over their heads. Thanks Fletcher!!!
@lesevesel2898Ай бұрын
Hard to believe the Wings were hot on the trail after them as well. I mean, even the Wings owner, Mike Ilitch, personally flew down to Nashville to meet with Suter. Luckily, for the Wings, those two chose home (because they were both from MN) over solid chances to play for the Cup.

There are several trades you missed and they are very recent. One is trading Marc Andre Fleury, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2021, to the Chicago Blackhawks for LITERALLY NOTHING! Then there is also Mac Pacioretty being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes for FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS (which somehow worked in Vegas' favor since Pacioretty continued to get injured and is now with the Capitals. It's like Vegas knew he was going to get injured again). Then comes this recent offseason where Josh Bailey got traded to the Chicago Blackhawks (along with a 2nd round pick) for FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS! I would have laughed at the Islanders except the Blackhawks bought out Bailey (but then I laughed at the Islanders when they grossly overpaid Pierre Engvall). Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin also got traded for future considerations. It is like good players being traded for nothing is a recent trend. Lastly, it is trading Anthony Duclair to the Sharks in exchange for a 4th line centerman in Steven Lorentz and a 2025 5th round pick. Like, they couldn't give the Panthers Hertl, Couture, Lebanc, or a 1st or 2nd round pick?

I'm a Flames fan, but I think the devils will be in contention for the Presidents Trophy this season. Wish we could have kept Toffoli, but he'll be a good scorer for you guys on the left or right. Even though he was playing right wing, a ton of his goals were on the left. Maybe Toffoli-Hughes-Bratt, or Toffoli-Hischier-Meier would be good lines. Should be lots of production from both of those.
@colonelquack9 ай бұрын
@@sakalaathletics With all the lean years since the 90's, I know to temper expectations. Hughes isn't at the Ilya Kovalchuk point where he can just will the team to some success. As well, to be seen whether Akira Schmid is the real deal, or if there will be another goalie circus. It's the Ranger fans that expect to win every year. ; )

Amazing video! However, I do have just one small bit of constructive criticism. Rob, unfortunately, the method by which you announce the videos is very hard to listen to. If I were put the sentences in writing by the way they sound, they would not make any sense. Example " We're talking about a three, four million dollar difference. That four million. In additional cap space. Is the difference between having championship-caliber depth. Or a shaky bottom six. As this trade. Emphasizes. How if a GM. Isn't focused on the long term..."

Worse trade: Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelson and Grant Jennings to Pittsburgh Penguins for John Cullen, Zarley Zalapski and Jeff Parker. My dad loved the Whalers and that trade was the start of the end of the Whalers. My dad had season tickets for them. As dad just said nothing could overtake that trade in stupidity! Born 20 years too late to be a Whalers fan...
