Fancy fact no one asked for: EMD experience the need to turbo their two stroke diesels, but since this system already need a supercharger to run they came out with a clever solution. They instaled a turbo and conected It to the crankshaft with a hydraulic system, so at lower rpms the crankshaft make the turbo to spin (like a centrifugal supercharger) and at higher rpms disconected the hidroclutch to let the turbo build boost. And walah, you have a turbo and a supercharger in less space required and using less plumbing needed

I still have mine although not registered since midway through covid due to the in-tank part of the fuel system "letting go" (its an old car that didn't like ethanol in the fuel system...I dropped off in maintenance so largely my fault). It really is a cool car and engine. I put a twin screw in mine and an old stand-alone fuel management system, SDS, to address IMHO the two biggest shortcomings of the engine and it really made it a beefier more reliable and consistent version of a G60 corrado. While the twin screw builds boost differently and was super loud before doing some intake work, it still largely feels like a g60. I kept the throttle body and boost return setup so it still has the two throttle plates and spring rates. I can still cruise around with my foot resting against the heavier spring of the bigger throttle plate and boost return valve, it still feels like a G60...nice, easy, quiet and just a light press away from that second plate and the boost and noise! I will put a vacuum actuated diverter valve at some point but I really want to keep that main "two stage" feel to the pedal if you know what I mean.

Many times I have heard of the G-Lader supercharger and it's spiral characteristics. This is the first video where anyone, including you, have shown how it works. So fascinating. That Comprex, though. Using the supercharger to compress the intake air AND expel the exhaust gases? That's some scavenging there.
@laurean5998
@laurean5998 3 жыл бұрын
The comprex is driven from the crankshaft, but does not need power to compress air, it uses kinetic energy from the exhaust gasses to compressfresh air. It does not help the engine scavange, it does even build some backpressure but less than a turbo. It just captures high pressure exhaust pulses in a cell, releases them into the exhaust, opens the fresh air side, using the kinetic energy of the moving exhaust gas to quickly pull in fresh air and Closes the exhaust side, so the fresh air doesn't move out into the exhaust At this point the intake air is still quickly moving in into the chamber which is building pressure, when the air stops moving the gate is shut and the pressurized air is given into the intake.

I wonder why the motor/generator system used on F1 cars isn’t applied to road cars. This is a system that uses a motor/generator connected mechanically to the rotor shaft. When there is excessive exhaust, the mg charges a battery, and when at low rpm the mg drives the rotors to maintain boast. This gives very low turbo lag, while minimizing use of the wastegate.

Seeing as electric superchargers and mild hybrids are becoming more and more of a thing, I look forward to the day when instead of having to do some arcane plumbing to install a turbo, all you have to do is buy an electric supercharger and intercooler (no exhaust plumbing needed), hook it up to the 48-volt hybrid system, and tune it to respond with boost pressure according to throttle output. Zero-lag turbo upgrades galore for NA mild hybrids. Edit: twin-charging also has an additional disadvantage compared to pure turbocharging. Making a lot of boost out of a supercharger is very difficult, especially in a system that is bypassed at high RPM. Engaging and disengaging a high boost supercharger repeatedly puts a lot of stress on both it and the engine, which means the supercharger in a twincharged engine is usually much lower boost than the turbo, leading to an engine that doesn't make as much low-end torque as a twin-turbo, small turbo, or VGT engine. This is partly why most twincharged engines are so small - I believe Volvo's 2 liter is the largest modern one - because they aren't expected to be torquey anyway. It's also why Volvo only uses twincharging on the 316hp variant of its 2 liter, while the lesser 250hp version is single turbo for cheaper build cost and the 450hp version uses a sequential system with an electric supercharger feeding a pair of turbos that all work in unison, as opposed to a parallel system with a belt-driven super at low RPM with the turbo reserved for high RPM.

I forgot that VW did a scroll supercharger. My work sells an oil injected scroll air compressor 4.5kW up to 22kW, they're very robust and reliable - we very seldom have problems with them. Oil free type are the most common in the scroll air compressors, they use a Teflon seal, mostly used in the medical field, but they aren't usually above 7.5kW, also very expensive.

You need to look at the history of turbo's and superchargers. Some of the earliest cars had superchargers, i.e. Auburn, Duesenberg, Cord, etc. Turbo chargers on some early cars would be Studebaker, (silver hawk), the (golden hawk) was supercharged. Corvair had a turbo'd version. Paxton superchargers where basically a belt driven turbo.
