They weren't very fast. My BF's GF's father bought her a GLHS for her 16th birthday. My BF's `68 Mustang GT would easily outrun it. It torque-steered like a mothrerfucker and wanted to plant itself in the curb if you launched it without hanging on and countersteering for dear life. It was the pinnacle of unoptimized FWD hot hatches. It took some muscle to drive fast and she only kept it for a couple months. The twin-stick gearshift was a gimmick/fuel economy bastardization. It was essentially a 4-speed with a manual overdrive like 1965 MGBs had. But you had to use the clutch to engage it.

The fun part about the CX500? The stock, n/a engine can easily handle a small turbo that boosts it up to 85ish hp. Only very minor 'upgrades' are needed, like rejetting the carbs, slightly heavier valve springs, and adding lighter/stronger pushrods. They are tough little engines. I built a pretty quick stripped Silverwing several years ago. I put the 500 heads on it, and rebuilt the engine, beefed up the valves, springs, pushrods and bigger carbs. All because I added a supercharger. Boy howdy, once I broke a hundred hp, that engine SCREAMED.

MOPAR engines (Shelby GLH(S)) were Turbo III & IV. The I & II were for "actual" MOPARs. The Charade GTti was a car I always wanted - Porsche sound for a fraction of the cost. The FIAT (Abarth) 500 was just overpriced for what was offered (certainly in the UK where you either got 140 or 170PS) - 200PS would have made it better value, but even then not oustandingly fast at the top end because of the car's tallness (why does a car have to be so tall? I had a Renault Clio mk3 for many years and that was also unncecessarily tall, suffering a very limited top speed - so much headroom that a giant could have driven it). More pose than potential, but maybe that's how Italians like their cars?
@buggs99503 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that all the blocks used for the M12 engines were road car blocks that had done over 100k km. BMW would strip the blocks bare, put them outside out the back of the workshop and piss on them for a year or so before machining them up. Apparently this would ensure the metallurgy was good enough to be used for F1. Or it could've all been an elaborate excuse to piss on things, you know what Germans are like..

i think of over-spool just as i think of lag ... turbos obviously increase an engines's efficiency, and more so when work is done to decrease lag, over-spool and fit the use-able power-band. but i do find myself more drawn to frequency wave tuning working with variable valve timing tech.. maybe it is being a motorcyclist, ( we don't like lag ), but i have worked out nearly a half bar of boost in this way, with no turbo.. where mild frequency tuning, on fixed cam timing, is generally smoother, and can also be very efficient...it depends on the application, but well done turbo systems are no less impressive.

I don't know if they had a T-Type or Grand national for that year, that would have been one of its only cars that would have been competitive against that nasty little Dodge Omni. go figure two of the fastest cars out of the '80s, both turbo cars. no wonder these things are so popular now. 😜🏁💯
