A lot of women don't feel comfortable in a regular gym due to harassment, judgement, and a male dominated environment. It makes sense that they'd make secondary places that do silly or experimental exercises to get their exercise fix and bond with other women. Me and many of my afab friends don't feel comfortable in a contemporary gym space. Not to mention that a lot of these women are middle-aged, might've had children and likely cannot work-out the same way they did when they were younger. These all are really silly but like Jacob said, in the end all that matters is people are taking care of their bodies and health.

Yesss the first thing I noticed with the classes was that it was mostly women, sign me up! The gym is fine but I always feel uncomfortable. Going when it’s mostly empty helps but it’s almost worse when it’s just me (afab) and 1 or 2 men. Also a lot of the machines are just too big for me and I’m not a small frame by any means.

One thing I’ve learned on my fitness journey: If I show up to a gym class and the little old white ladies are there, I know that shit goes hard. They’re in the yoga classes, the Zumba classes, the various Aqua fitness classes…they know what’s fun, effective, low-impact, and scalable with age/fitness level. Plus they’re so supportive and they never bother with the goofy/dangerous trends.

Right? I had to relearn how to walk after a coma, and I was lucky enough to be able to do a portion of my physical therapy in the water. It really helped me get a full range of motion back while building up strength thanks to the buoyancy. I know it gets stereotyped as something that's for old ladies, but maybe check out water aerobics? It seems kind of similar to the stuff I had to work on that was helpful

i gotta say, i tried going to the gym and absolutely hated it. everything is loud, chaotic, and it feels like im being judged by people who are more experienced than me. the only places where i’ve felt truly comfortable working out were pilates, pole dancing and water gymnastics. the soaring and trampoline workouts might look silly as hell, but i can bet that they are effective. i’ve tried a trampoline lesson once and i didn’t last five minutes, my balance was so off that those bars could’ve lowkey saved me from possibly falling face first on the floor if i stayed there for longer.

Those bungee classes are fun! I had a friend talk me into going to a couple. Even though it's low impact(due to your bodyweight being held up partially by bungees), it's a great way to get that cardio and a little strength training! Also, the flying around part was MAGNIFICENT. Edit: spelling

I also want to say to you and to anyone else reading this that the gym is usually (though I don't know your actual location, of course) pretty supportive. You might feel like people are judging you, but 99 out of 100 times they really aren't. It just takes some getting used to, but I've found that people are a lot nicer than you'd think, especially to beginners. Silly or cringe or whatever, at least they're being active and harmless. If I could go flying around as a way to be fit, why not? It looks really fun! Also, as someone who can't work out because of various mental disorders keeping me from focusing on 1 second of Jumping Jack (and also I have a hand disability so I cannot hold weights or do pushups), I dance as a workout. There is nothing wrong with unconventional workouts as long as you're happy and you're not getting in the way of anyone else. And let's maybe stop recording people at the gym without their consent? Plus you get to listen to music and it looks like everyone is having a ton of fun. Hey there, that first clip was from Pound Fitness, and I was an instructor for the longest time (before my gym dropped my class). It's a super effective HIIT workout with ab, leg, and glute work and ridiculous cardio. Its super deceiving to see from the outside, but SO tough! Don't knock it til you try it! Also, it's super adaptive and able to be differentiated for different populations, abilities, etc. It makes exercise really accessible like other people mentioned about these "unconventional" seeming workouts.

The most important thing for me about these exercises is that they look fun as hell, and finding a workout that's fun is so much more important than one that's "optimal" because that's the one you're going to stick to. I was a competitive dancer for 13 years, but my doctor said if I wanted to walk when I was 30, I had to stop. So naturally, I gained quite a bit of weight and got quite out of shape. However, I found aerial fitness. Specifically bungee fitness. It helps me so much. My knees are shit and I can actually do squats and other things I couldn’t do before because of bungee fitness. I also do pole fitness. I have gained so much muscle back and my body is doing so much better and my doctor is okay with everything.
