His keys have always been so refreshing and unique as there is no other like it and without Dave I know despite the great lineup I'd never have been the fan I am. And fk me, the amount of gigs every year, they are so tight live, the fans I've met at different gigs is special too, even the day that followed on the train back home I'd have someone spot the Tshirt and mention how amazing the show was.

I was very lucky to see the Stranglers in the mid 80s with JJ, Dave and Jet and it was brilliant. When Dave started playing I was transported to another dimension. Magnificent artists. I have 4 or 5 of their early albums and theres not a bad song on any of them. Amazing creativity.

Listened to Dark Matters and liked it a lot. After so many years Baz Warne managed to be a pretty decent replacement for Hugh Cornwell. The unique style of the Stranglers fits well to the frontmant-guitarist. How much time will it take to get an alternative for the keyboard player? Unless they hire a Dave Greenfield impersonator. But for now, we have Dark Matters to appreciate. I connect more with the Stranglers than I connected in the 80's. They were a band that I liked but now it has become one of my favs. Congratulation for the excellent work.

JJ Burnel saying Dave Greenfield had autism. Strong case as he once wore his hair resembling that of Anita Manning off 'Bargain Hunt' & as a youngster would have been obsessed with keyboards. That said he was a highly talented keyboard player & would certainly be in same division as Keith Emerson & Ray Manzarek from 'The Doors'. Sadly all no longer with us.

Dark Matters is a good album in the autumn, or possibly ending of their career, but now appearing on BBC Breakfast TV answering unresearched questions (the interviewers seems not to know the history of the band) they seem warm, cuddly, melancholy, and reflective. A far cry from when they were at their peak - snarling, aggressive, and angry with the classic line up including Jet and Hugh. Outsiders -dismissed by the punks for being too musical (Dave's Magical keyboards) and by the liberal Inteligencia for being loutish and sexist - they have long outlasted their peers and produced music that has long-lasting enduring appeal right to the end.

Thank you for your music, eternally. From a true fan.

@@eckeynecker I am not disputing that. That point is purely a matter of personal taste. What I am saying is that the variety of genres, sounds, topics, lyrics, image etc. is greater with the Stranglers. They have definitely a greater spectrum. That is also witnessed by the tons of fans produced video some of them of really amazing quality.
@eckeynecker
@eckeynecker 3 жыл бұрын
Disagree @@nicolagianaroli2024 , but purely in a debating , conversational type of way , not aggressively or i,rm right your wrong type of scenario . The point made by myself is of course one of my own personal taste . This is the reasons why i think The Clash covered more ground than The Sranglers in terms of musical genres and song subject matter , the topics/points/styles raised are not exhaustive , i would be here all day if they were . Musical genres / styles used/incorporated Punk Rock , Rock , Rockabilly , Jazz , Blues , Funk , Disco , Reggae , Dub , Rhythm and blues , Ska . Some of the many many subject matters covered , The capitalist system , the education system , low paid jobs , racism , riots , America , Drugs , violence , theft , the cold war ,prostitution , terrorism and thats just a small sample from the first album . And heres a conundrum to finish on , why is arguably JJ Burnells best bass line ( nice & sleazy ) better then Paul Simonoms best bass line ( rock the cashbah ) ( marginally over guns of Brixton ) even though rock the cashbah is a better bass line ? See if you can get it lol .

I really wish BBC presenters would check their facts . Baz Warne has not been with the Stranglers for their whole career, he joined in 2000 replacing John Ellis who left having been originally brought in after Hugh Cornwell left. Paul Roberts left during the recording of Suite XVI and Warne then took on vocal duties as well as lead guitar. The Stranglers formed on 11th September 1974. RIP Dave Greenfield, truly one of the "Heroes".

I heard The Stranglers first time back in 1990 after their compilation album (which I still have). I was around 10 back then, my friend used to borrow the album from his sister and we listened to it a lot. 20 years later my daughter was born and we played that very same record in the hospital. Meanwhile I had "poisoned" my gf with The Stranglers and she became a fan too :) Now it's 2021, almost 2022, and The Stranglers are one thing that our whole little family enjoys together, at home, in a car etc. I guess they can't write any love songs but they definitely make it happen outside the tracks :)

That interview should at least lasted more than (5 minutes) they have so much more to say. Listen to the album Dark Matters for at least 3 to 4 times then it starts to grow on you. Their best offering since The Raven but you can see Bazs influence on this album completely . Not the vitriolic melodies of Hugh but a different vibe from Baz. The reminiscence of hazy California Doorsy on Breathe is fantastic.

I keep watching this video. I feel like I've known JJ all my life. I did see the Stranglers back in the day and I love Hugh's Strangler stuff, I did tend to lean to JJ's tunes. Being a bass player of some anti Genius where as JJ is Genius with the bass. He took an instrument and made it the lead. I am fascinated by leading bass and that style married so well with Hughes wiry guitar and later Baz. Its a shame Hugh and JJ are not friends . I thought maybe Dave's death might cause a ceasing of hostilities. I get JJ's side and I get Hugh's . Come on lads... death is final. Now Dave has gone and if there was a sound to the Stranglers it was those Keyboards. Maybe then the JJ Bass and Then maybe Hugh and then Pensioners Play Drums Jet Black. I always saw Jet as a plodder. I love Genetix though. His drums are creative in that. But the Bass.... and wow.. Dave would sing it. I've been watching a lot of youtube Stranglers. Some amazing concerts. Baz and JJ - two Front Men there. no doubt. Amazing and I cannot believe JJ is knocking on 70's 'door... Unreal. He was always 10 years older than me... and suddenly...shit i'm 59.... got to go , seen something in the shadows

Weird stuff eh? I keep hearing this about autistic people. Schools make out they are dumb, and yet really they are geniuses. Why we think they are dumb is because the rest have not evolved to that level of thinking. Another person I heard was autistic is Julian Assange. Phew that guy blows my mind about how he set up Uncle Sam with Wikileaks. Someone said Einstein was as well, and I can guess a few others in our history too, e.g. I reckon people like Dirac - classic characteristics. Stranglers sung No More Heroes, well not quite.

been a strangler since 1977, the last few years they have been every bit as good as those early years, but Dave will be such a miss, and Jets is missed as well, hopefully still ok though, though they never were comfortable with the term punk, JJ was the most punk in attitude , just listen to Ugly or 5 minutes , he was the real deal from that era , Baz has been a top frontman and appears to keep JJ happy, and for years through the mid 80s to late 90s he never seemed that happy, pity Hugh decided recently to not take the hand of friendship from JJ , we are all old and need to grow up sometimes , and it makes Hugh out to be a bit of a sad loser,

Lol well the idea of punk was anti fashion anti hero but obviously because of the success people jumped on bandwagon and sold out but there was a wide spectrum of which new wave was part so you could say New York Dolls were original pioneers then bands like The Ramones to The Skids to Crass - I always thought Pistols were too commercial whilst The Clash were always changing their style but the message was there - I think doesn’t matter what instrument you have you can be Punk …but the rise of Oi and ski head right wing tried to hijack punk too as there was some cross over but their motives was completely different to Punk as Punk is ant fascist - hence Dead Kennedy’s

I know someone with Asperger's syndrome too.It's sometimes very hard to see J.Burnel look a shadow of his former self, ravishing when he was younger up until he got married curiously...just goes to show how the old institution can put years on you.Think it's the end of the road for The Stranglers.

Tend to agree with that last point. With the announcement a couple of years ago of the final full tour, they knew they were getting on a bit and maybe time to slow down. And with Dave's passing, it was probably the biggest sign of all that they'd run their course and that this album needed to be finished as a tribute to Dave and a farewell to the fans. Really hoping now that we can get over to Glasgow next January to see them in concert one last time.
