@@marcusajoyce And as he should be. Hugh wrote a lot of their hots. Neither JJ, Jet, or Baz could write a decent song to save their lives. And that's why The Stranglers is like KISS: A tribute band of themselves.

I my view despite the absence of Hugh Cornwell and his undoubted charisma The Stranglers are still a very effective relevant band !And I think that the addition of Baz Warne in terms of what he brings musically has been considerable !! From Adrian Browne

1:50 _"The Strangers has never really been a static institution"_ Sorry Jet, but you're wrong. From the point of view of those who followed you and your band, for twenty+ years, from the mid-70's to 1990, You, Hugh, JJ and Dave *were* the Stranglers. I mean, I give 100% credit to those who came along to fill those empty shoes, but to a huge chunk of your fanbase, there was only one true line-up, and it had Hugh out in front.

The band were saved when they returned to being a four piece again. Hugh talks about volatility of the people in the band, that certainly wasn't reflected in the lame music they were making in the late 80's and the "10" album. The volatility and unpredictability was what made the Stranglers music a creative risk taking experimentation that actually worked. Volatile from 1976-1981 for sure, i don't see it afterwards. Perhaps Hugh was sick of the bad boy image and really craved artistic acceptance that The Stranglers were never going to achieve critically. The most important thing is the music has stood the test of time magnificently and Hugh should be grateful the band still exist and go out an play those songs as they should be played. It has enabled him to continue his own tribute to songs he co wrote and performed originally. Baz has been a revelation.!

Just reading some of the comments: Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion and you can't really argue over taste, as everyone's different. Some will prefer Hugh, some Paul, some Baz etc......... I'm a "latter day" convert to their sound........I'd heard most of their 80's hits but didn't know much about their early period. Then I heard "Norfolk Coast" a few yrs ago and thought "What a cracking tune"......this actually led me to investigate their early records and was completely hooked. Paul was the singer on that particular song and he sounded great, whether his image, style, attitude or personality fitted the band is another question altogether. Obviously there's an element of nostalgia and sentiment with some of the older fans and it was virtually impossible to replace Hugh with anyone comparable but I think they've gone on to become one of the best bands on the planet with an incredible legacy. Hugh may be regretting his decision as I've heard he's playing very small gigs and don't think his solo career has taken off in a big way.

I think just Hugh and JJ at the forefront were much more exciting than Paul. Baz is a better replacement for Hugh than thé other two before him, but all in all , for me, The Stranglers were the best when Hugh was with them. 🖤 And RIP Dave Greenfield whose successor is damn fine too. And the bloke who stands in for Jet is top sausage as well. Long live JJ.

That singer fella was not the stranglers. I prefer Baz to him. Baz has a more punk rock feel like hugh did. Since Hugh has left he wont return and if the rest want to carry on it's their decision. Jet Black formed it and it was his choice if anyones. JJ and Dave will always be the real sound for me and Baz has brought back the energy and more Punkish sound that hugh had and Baz is equally as talented and Is the next best thing they could have had to hugh.
