I doubt anybody in the Strangler's gave a 'bleep' about making money from playing. Those guys were all about just making the greatest music possible. Everything they did was just magic. They give me goosebumps when I hear them, just so good!!! RIP Jet Black.

@@80ssynthfan48 I was exaggerating a tad. I didn't mean they didn't want to get paid for their artistic creations and hard work. Just that getting rich wasn't forefront in their priorities. They played with a kind of intensity that goes far beyond what 'career' minded groups usually display. I'm aware of Jet Black's previous business savvy and his use of the ice-cream van he owned as the vehicle that the Stranglers traveled in when they toured around England in their early years. In any case, the're just a fantastic band that left a giant legacy of unforgettable music!

I went around the house they all shared in Chiddingfold back in the 70s It was 1999 and I went around the place with ex lead Hugh Cornwell. When we got to what was his old (attic) bedroom he turned to me and said “I wrote Grip in this room”. Possibly my most honoured moment of my fandom.

At the time punk rock started in the uk in 1976, Stranglers were old guys and they had been around a while already. But the energy they had, amazing. I was blown away the first time I heard ‘no more heroes’. And when the ‘real’ punkbands only recorded one album, or copied themselves on there following albums, Stranglers evolved and remained fascinating. I remember Dave Greenfield saying, when their 5th or 6th album was released : ‘at least I have to use both hands now to play’ :-)

Just 4 great musicians who made great music, 2 of my heroes are gone. I was 14 when Rattus was released, they got me through adolescence. Been lucky enough to see them live 40 odd times throughout my life. Love to Baz too.

I was at their after show drinks many years ago. I got talking to Dave Greenfield and his lovely wife. Dave kept saying, I can't stay long , I've got a taxi waiting. Then he would say, fancy another beer :-) Anyhow , he kept that taxi waiting for one and a half hours. A true gentleman and is so very sadly missed. RIP my dear friend

I played this album to death when I bought it in 1978. Most of my friends were only into straight rock and/or roll but I was a big fan of melodic punk [I just invented that genre]. Goodbye Toulouse was also a fantastic groove......the bass is brutalist and picked like most punk was.

Still recommend "Down In The Sewer", an early set closer about their views on living in London, "Genetix" another set closer from The Raven with a killer bass solo and "Tank" which just fun. Jet Black's drumming always reminds me of a Krautrock motorik drumming style. I know a lot of English punk bands listened to Neu and Can so it kind of makes a little sense.

'Let Me Introduce You To The Family' is another Stranglers' track worthy of analysing. A similar intensity to 'Grip' with a powerful beat throughout. From the same album that gave us 'Golden Brown', that album being 'La Folie'.

This was there first single from the first album" Rattus Norvettegus." From the pub scene in London to the punk scene. They had enough material left over from the previous couple of years 75 76 they put two albums out in six months in 77 and although not strictly punk they had the anger and attitude of the pistols, clash ,Damned ect that set them apart from the others. Would it be possible for you to play "Ugly " from the same album please as it really emphasises how the class system can downtread people if your not rich or wealthy. Crowds always miss the sax on live plays of Grip so mates and I would do the sax with an air sax from the stands. We looked so dumb but the sax completes grip.

Actually, they had to take up jobs before they made it. Because Hugh had a degree, he was allowed to teach. School mam was written based on a stuffy teacher he met in the staff room, although the story was made up. Grip was their first single and it reached high in the charts, until someone missed it out in the listings, causing it to drop out of the charts. It must have been hard to swallow, bless ‘em ❤

Only one original member left. 2 dead and Hugh flounced off years ago. They are more of a cover band these days but their first 5 albums were essential listening.

As a teenager in the late 70's, first album I bought was the Pistols. I liked punk for the guitar and drum sound, wasn't bothered about the contrived movement, however, the second album I bought was Rattus Norvegicus which although coming to prominence at the same time, the Stranglers were not punk. I'm grateful as they opened my eyes to a more sophisticated manic sound that punk didn't have. I loved both (Along with the perennial Northern Soul (My constant) but the Stranglers helped me grow up a wee bit quicker. BTW Chris, get well soon and in Scotland we have a remedy called a hot toddie, whiskey with hot water. Keep doing what you are doing, you are sophisticated without barriers, entertaining and so non judgemental I think you both are wonderful reactors.

Interesting thoughts about what they're making. Back then you could see these bands in our local town venues. They were accessible. Now they're richer but we need to visit huge venues to see them and the local halls are closed.

Turns out Ticketmaster has been buying up or building venues that they sell tickets to go see. Other venues get ignored. In fact, Ticketmaster will throttle your shows if you don't use their promotion for any venue outside their own venues.

@@hanierfamily I didnt know this, so just checked my "local" arena ( 30 Miles away instead of the previous small venue that was 7) Lo and behold, you're absolutley spot on. The Venue is "owned" by a Trust, but the management of that venue is subcontracted to Live Nation Entertainment (UK) of which ticketmaster is an arm.

Elastica. The band from the early 90s fronted by an architectual student and ex Suede member Justine Frischmann was called Elastica. Elastica took a whole wide heep of inspiration from The Stranglers. Often parring down Stranglers hits, culminating in their eventually boring The Stranglers to the point that Stranglers managment sueing Elastica for their open and complacent use of The Stranglers - 'No More Heroes' rift chords. In truth, The Stranglers could have sued for at least two dorect rip offs. Elastica in the meantime were busy modeling all their promo photos in grainy black and while in the same locations The Stranglers had had theirs tsken teo decades previously snd even releasing a direct copy of The Stranglers Black & White album cover replacing Hughes head with Justines as a superimposition. To day Elastica were attempting to free load off of Strangler image is an understatement.

There is, or was, a Musician's Union in the UK, but they don't seem to have been very effective. Perhaps more with classical concert musicians. For some years drummers were not classed as musicians by the union, which led to a rash of jokes about drummers. But absolutely, in general everyone needs unions.

@@hanierfamily The Stranglers would. Probably. Or at leadt 3 of them would wince a bit if called stars. They are a very matter of fact bunch. The only one of them that craved the limelight overtly was Hugh. His attitude was rather more, -'lets get the cash and the fame or go home' than the other 3. They got both eventuslly but he was to leave the band. Dave on Keys was autistic and didn't really have much of a pov on the subject. He just wanted to play. And play like someone from anothet planet or on one he did. Covid took Dave. Black and Burnel were very much of the viewpoint that the music came before anything else despite Burnel being intimately linked to the likes of Grace Jones, he remained/s throughout exceptionally apathetic towards the whole fame celeb thing. He would be seen wheeling one of his motorbikes up onto stage to fire up and use as a drum beat rather than invite anyone famous up there to do a number with. I don't however think Burnels soft spot for Debbie Harry is/was any secret. Hughs affection for the limelight and celebrity culture, rubbing shoulders with Bono and Robbie Williams kind of lifestyle appreciation, was ultimately one of the divisive factors that resulted in Burnel beating Hugh up and Hugh subsequently exiting his own creation. I believe he rightly thought he was a musician who had trod the boards, done the hard graft, played the dives played the mega arenas been beaten up by the crowds been banned too often been in prison. It was time to get paid the sort of money that left him with something in his bank account after the label and the video crews, the road crews and the industry in general had eaten their slice. Thing is, they would attract far far more of that 'star' treatment on continental Europe than in Britain, where their less than star quality but uncompromising visial image presented immensely less importance to the deeper thinking youth there. ...Blacks age would even be mentioned in Britain where distain for anyone over 30 is still a palpable atmospheric. On the continent their music came first.
