Wow, never knew Rob Hubbard did the music for Desert Strike. Always loved it but never looked into it. I had a friend who's aunt owned a video rental store which also did Mega Drive and Nintendo games. So I never owned this series back in the day because we got free game rentals :) Just recently picked them all up and they're still great.

That's because HE DIDN'T. The Strike theme was composed by Brian Schmidtt, who did all the sound and music for Desert Strike and Jungle Strike. They brought on Don Veca, because he was an internal resource and didn't want to continue paying Brian. This video is FILLED with misinformation.

Somehow as kids we ended up playing Jungle Strike first. Then later went back to play Desert, but Jungle still holds the most nostalgia for me. Interesting how they have such intense menu and cutscene music. Then silence in-game except your chopper blades... It gave the impression things got serious and the shit got real. Well done.

I grew up playing Jungle Strike with my father on the first family PC, a 60 MHz Intel based IBM, with Windows 95. However, I was already an adult when I learned that it was just one game in an entire series, and I still haven't played every one of them. So far I think I only played Desert and Jungle Strike. Also, at least on PC, these two had a strafe hotkey, with LShift, which I also only learned relatively recently.

Nice overview! Also good to see, that apparently the overall quality of the series remained high. I really only played the first game on Amiga though... a surprisingly decent conversion that adds it's own quality touches. Probably doesn't have the frame rate though. Then the demise of Commodore prevented any of the sequels appearing on the system of course.
@BastichB64K

Thx it was fun too make . Never played the Amiga version of Desert but heard it was good and its a pity the other two 16-bit ones didn't get converted.

@@BastichB64K Yes, when EA still cared! The Amiga version also has a different intro and a tune which sounds very much of its time but was quite cool back then. It also uses more samples in game for the SFX. Jason Whitely did the sound. It came on 3 disks, so there was disk swapping involved. Commodore went bankrupt in April of 1994, otherwise EA may have converted more titles to the A1200. A great system that probably came at least 2 years too late to change Commodore's fortune. IF they had managed to market the system in the right way also.

I only had a pirated copy of Desert Strike for the Amiga. I liked the graphics and the isometric style, but I never knew how to play it properly. Not only what all the controls were, but also how to effectively control the helicopter. I'd take off, fly over land and suddenly, I'm being shot. I deal with whatever was shooting me, move onto the next area and I'm being shot again. That would keep happening until I got shot down. Needless to say I never got anywhere in the game.

Great production values again. Must admit to not actually playing any of the games though they do look interesting. Interestingly again I like the Genesis games a lot better graphically than the PS1. I was never a fan of the fuzzy, clunky PS1 graphics and never really a fan of the PS1 period. Brilliant documentary mate, absolutely loved it 👍

Thx , the good old PS1 gfx are definitely an acquired taste especially the 1st gen stuff . Soviet and Nuclear actually look pretty good overall and captured all the footage from original hardware . But yeah that Genesis 16-bit look cant be beat .

EA should remake or remaster all the games for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. They could put the first three in one game with better graphics, updated gameplay, and use cinematic cutscenes and tweak some of the dialogue with voice acting.
