She passed me on the eye exam but the next time I renewed my CDL,I got the same nurse who remembered me.... She was very specific about which lines to read from on this test.

Spiritual fitness/fortitude. The willingness to stay in the fight. That’s talked about a lot over on Active Self Protection, and I can’t see how it would have been any different in the Old West. The thing that floors me is how you get a lung shot and a gut shot, and survive only to die 10 years later from bad water in your mine! Thank you for the video, Santee. This may not have anything to do with the west, but in Vermont of 1848, A man by the name of Phineas Gage had a railroad spike lodged in his head.... and survived. They were able to remove it, however it severely changed his personality. He died at the age of 36 from a seizure possibly caused by said injury.

Actually doctors have used maggots to remove dead skin long before then and there has been experiments recently using maggots rather then doing surgery because maggots only eat the dead skin. I do know of cases of leeches being used to help remove excess blood from wounds which help the patients recovery.

Touring the Carnton plantation near Franklin TN which was used for a hospital by both sides during the War,,there is a display of the surgical tools used to treat the wounded after the battle. The tour guide said that,"Many doctors recognize some of the tools which are still in use for for surgery today."

Hugh Glass would recover some and--none too happy about his pards abandoning him, tracked them down to Fort Atkinson (Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska ) to seek revenge. But the cowards, upon hearing of his miraculous survival and knew he wasn't too happy with them--joined the Army at Ft. Atkinson to protect themselves. When Glass arrived there, he found that his former comrades were beyond his reach, so back down the Missouri he went.

He's a video in itself. I read he was forced into piracy by Jean Lafiite and escaped. He was also abandoned again (after the bear scenario) and had to walk back hundreds of miles to civilization. This guy had bad luck...or good luck depending on how you look at it.

Anthony Hopkins had too much fun playing Dr Kellogg. It's also a little disconcerting how ill-prepared both sides in the Civil War were in regards to medical care. But at least the physicians involved had the courtesy to share their experiences for the betterment of medical practice.

There was a Civil War soldier who survived after quite literally getting shot between the eyes. There's a photograph of him. In 1863 Jacob Miller was shot between the eyes at Chickamauga and left for dead. After regaining consciousness he had to return his left eye to it's proper place and the he set out alone on the 15 mile trip back to Chattanooga. He died in 1917 at the age of 88.

Beer was brewed locally. The grain was reused. The first run was strongest and only men were allowed to drink it. The third run was called small beer and that is what children drank. Also, life was extremely hard and the beer acted as a pain reliever at the end of a hard day.
