It's fascinating to see how the balance of power shifts throughout history. Each century brings new challenges and opportunities, leading to different countries rising to the top. It's important to note that military strength is just one aspect of a country's overall power and should be considered within the context of economic, political, and social factors as well.

There are so many countries missing from this list: - Tang (They literally controlled over half the worlds wealth and you decided to give the dub to a fledgling roman republic...) - Ming (similar reason to tang) - Spanish empire (This one is a bit more debatable as the ottomans were strong, but in the end the Spanish had a better navy and far more influence) - Mauryan empire (during its peak it had the largest military, economy, navy, etc) - Maratha (similar reason to maurya) - France (Napoleon) etc (You filled up a lot of spots with the ottomans and romans. Obviously the ottomans would be worthy of atleast 1 century and the romans of 3 but they weren't always as powerful as they were during their peaks so putting them up there for so long isn't right)
@ComradeHellas
@ComradeHellas Жыл бұрын
I agree that 18th century should have been France, 17th century Spain and Ming also should have been counted for the 15th century, the Ottomans could stay in their spot for the 16th century. I also agree that Tang could squeeze in during the Roman period. Maurya was also strong enough to make it probably. But the Marathas were never powerful enough, the Mughals and the Qing were powerful Empires but they crumbled in front of the British.

Power is also about military, in fact both of them lost against England, if I'm not wrong, but surely in 16th century should have been the Spanish empire there. Europe stood in awe of the Ottomans who crushed many states and conquered vast territories, going, as all patriotic Turks will proudly point out, "all the way to the gates of Vienna." European literature is replete with the depictions of the Turk as the hated enemy. The English often thought of the Turk as awe-inspiring and destructive. Thomas Fuller wrote in The Holy Warre (1639): "The Turkish Empire is the greatest... the sun ever saw. ...Grass springeth not where the grand signior's horse setteth his foot."

The great historian Ibn Khaldun also argues in his “Introduction to History” (or The Muqaddimah) that nomadic peoples, the Turks foremost among them, were the most energetic and martial of peoples and that imperial dynasties and regimes emerged from such groups until they became corrupted and softened by civilization and luxury, which resulted in a loss of martial energy and group solidarity. This analysis is very true because as the Abbasid caliphate started to lose its power and influence in the mid-ninth century most of the dynasties that emerged to control the various regions of the Muslim world were founded by Turks, either tribal nomads or former slave soldiers. Ibn Khaldun even attributes the victory of the Muslims over the Mongols to the martial power and energy of the Turks, who formed the elite ranks of the Mamluk armies that defeated the Mongols on several occasions as they attempted to advance into Syria and Egypt between 1260 and 1323.

@@abert1313 The South Slavic tribal groups moved south and southwest from their Pripet homeland, eventually entering the Byzantine-controlled Balkan Peninsula as either allies of or refugees from the invading Turkic Avars during the second half of the sixth century. Their search for a new, permanent homeland proved successful. Today their descendants solidly inhabit virtually all of the northwestern, central, and southeastern regions of the Balkans. Turks comprise a third ethnic component of the Balkan population. Although today numerically small-a little over 1 million people (about 2 percent of the total population) they have played a role in shaping the history of the Balkans far beyond their numbers. In late antiquity the rolling plains of the Danube and Prut rivers in the Balkans' northeast served Turkic tribes from the Eurasian steppes as an open door into the heart of the peninsula and the riches of the Eastern Roman Empire. Huns and related tribes swept through the Balkans in the fifth and sixth centuries, followed by the Avars and their allies in the sixth and seventh. Among these latter were the Bulgars, who established a state south of the Danube. Unlike the Avars, whose settlements in the Balkans proved transitory, the Bulgar state persisted in the face of concerted Byzantine pressures. By the ninth century the Bulgars were challenging the Byzantine Empire for political hegemony in the Balkans, but by that time they also were well on the way toward ethnic assimilation into their Slavic-speaking subject population. The conversion of the Turkic Bulgar ruling elite to Orthodox Chris-tianity at midcentury opened the gate to their rapid and total Slavic assimilation. Within a hundred years of the Bulgar conversion, most traces of their Turkic origins had disappeared, except for their name-the Bulgars had been transformed into Slavic Bulgarians Oğuz, Pecheneg, and Cuman Turkic tribes appeared in the Balkans between the ninth and eleventh centuries. Most of them eventually suffered an ethnic fate similar to the Bulgars and left little lasting impression, although the Gagauz Turks of Bessarabia, a region lying east of the Prut River (now known as Moldova), and some Turks living today in the eastern Balkans may be direct ethnic descendants of those medieval Turkic interlopers. Additionally, the Ottoman Turks' five-century rule over most of the Balkans established numerous scattered enclaves of Turkish- speaking groups throughout much of the southern portion of the peninsula, with a heavy concentration in the southeastern region of ancient Thrace.

At first, it was applied to some small and insignificant nomadic tribes in the area of the Onon River. In the thirteenth century, however, the name Mongol grew into an umbrella term for a large group of Mongolic and Turkic tribes united under the rule of Genghis Khan. It is not clear what the Mongols called themselves in their own languages. In fact, the specific origin of the Mongolic languages is unclear. Some linguists have proposed a link to languages like Tungusic and Turkic, which are often included alongside Mongolic in a hypothetical language group called “Altaic languages”, but the evidence for this is rather weak.

THE TURKS AND THE WEST.

The Arabs themselves, divided and fragmented, were being increasingly challenged by Turkic steppe warriors who were militarily superior to the commercially minded urban populations of the region. The Arab-Muslim expansionary movement that had begun with Muhammad's first conquests in the early part of the seventh century, had proceeded with fits and starts before it came under pressure from external menaces and had started to wane by the tenth century. But, if conquest had all but ceased, Arabic culture and language was continuing to expand both east and south into sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, Persian culture was making a comeback of sorts, while the Turks were rapidly gaining a steady foothold among the elite of the Arab armies. In time, this Turkish military presence would soon prove indispensable and it would logically translate into political power.

The strongest empire of the 16th-17th centuries (at least until 1650) was the Spanish. The Turks were unable to conquer Vienna in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Spanish empire could wage a simultaneous war against 5 European powers, and defeat them at the same time (France, England, Protestant Germany, the Netherlands and the Turkish empire), in addition to having annexed Italy, dominating the great powers of Western Europe. , while at the same time we had land in 100 countries on five continents. Spanish emperor in Germany, Spanish king in England, capture of the French king, annexation of Portugal, Spanish NATO in Italy... 30 million km2. France was the greatest power between 1650-1815, not Türkiye. From 2050-60, China will be the world's leading power. The British Empire was no longer the great power in 1945. Yes from 1815-1945.

Very nice video, but in the 2nd century BC to the 7th century AD, the Parthian and Sassanid empires were as powerful as the Roman empire, and throughout history, both fought many wars with each other and were roughly equal. Rome won some wars against Iran, but Iran also won equally against Rome Too; It cannot be said that Rome was an absolute power.

The Roman Empire reached its zenith from around 31 BC, when Octavian wrested control of Egypt from the Ptolemies and his rival Marc Antony, to around 226 AD under Severus Alexander, when the Persians succeeded the Parthians and posed a serious threat to Rome's eastern provinces. Rome held the line there, more or less, until around 614 AD, but in the meantime it lost much of the north and west to the Germanic invaders. The US became the main global power in the aftermath of WWII and reached its zenith in the 1990s when it eclipsed the broken Soviet Union. As for the 21st Century, we are still in very early days and it's a long way even to 2050; so far the US' military adventurism in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, and who knows where else next could consolidate its hegemony or be a pitfall to a serious setback. We just don't know right now. Good Luck!

Also, The France was the most powerful nation in the 18th century with Britain and France battling over the 17th and 18th centuries for dominance and Spain was the most powerful nation in the world in the 16th century. @@yaqubleis6311 The Arabs themselves, divided and fragmented, were being increasingly challenged by Turkic steppe warriors who were militarily superior to the commercially minded urban populations of the region.

The Turks have constantly been an imperial people. They have made a habit of empire building, and although none of their structures have attained the imposing dimensions of the Mongol achievement, many of them have been far more lasting. The maps show at least a dozen states of the first rank which have been constructed by Turkish peoples, and another dozen built by Turkish leaders, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with the assistance of a military aristocracy of their own race.
