Yes you can stop or if already stopped all you have to do is hit the 4x4 switch. You do not have to be moving g to engage.

It's basically the same functionality as the torque locker that youd use in a visco, but for the all around larger smart lock axles and parts.

Not necessarily, the torq lockers engage and disengage with throttle. It’s notorious for breaking axle tips due to the harsh engagement when it locks. They also have a few springs and moving parts. Ours is a solid spool from one side to the other.

Congrats. Question, i think you said a smart lock can be changed on the fly, i believe the manual states to come to a stop prior to switching from 2 to 4 wheel drive.

You do not need to stop to go into 4 wheel drive. As long as all the tires are moving at the same speed. If your spinning the rear tires faster than the front and try to lock it you risk grinding gears or breaking something.

I guess my main question is how does it react on the road in 2wd? We run in Tennessee and wv a bunch and regularly have to hat the pavement to get to and from places faster. Sometimes we run 15+ miles on the pavement.

You won’t even notice it unless your going really slow on the road. Then it will feel tight. We run the same terrain. We’ve rode from ride royal blue to tackett on the road 4 days in a row there and back with 3 of us running this smart spool. You’ll be good. If your in your drive way or in a parking lot and making a really right turn you will notice it aside from those scenarios your good.

Looks like it’s at least a contender to make a can am as strong up front as a Kauffman diff does to a turbo s Polaris. That ring gear is the weak link for you now.

That ring gear is stout. I think it will be axle or pinion shaft myself. If you don’t have A build driveline then probably a driveshaft haha. But it’s honestly one of those things. Keep building and find the next weak link. Something will break at some point.

If your breaking axles or diffs this is definitely worth checking out. Steering isn’t bad while driving or on the trails. It will be stiffer backing up on pavement but aside from that it’s hardly noticeable.

I have a question. Our Can-Am fully locked is a lot of times about impossible to turn. What do you all use for power steering running these units that are fully locked all of the time to help with steering?

That’s actually not true. It’s not hard to steer at all. We show how easy it is at the end of this video. We are all on stock steering with no mods at all. We destination ride, road ride and ride hard with no issues. We have a 2019, 2020 and 2023 fully locked. The only time it’s hard is when your on pavement going in circles.

Oh wow yes I just seen the end of the video. Our 2020 Can-Am X3 has a Halo 30 and when it's fully locked many times it feels impossible to turn. Like it takes everything I've got to try and turn it. Not locked it's very easy. it sounds like we may need a new power steering unit. Have y'all used any of the power steering upgrades? Do you have any recommendations on power steering? I really like what y'all have come up with and may switch in the near future. Especially being able to use the same size axles either side!

@donhall2nd we don’t use any type of power steering aside from what they came with. I’ve heard others have used an upgraded version from super atv or even hydro steer but we have no experience with any of those so I don’t know which direction would be best suited for you.

You would order smart spool axles from turner cobra or rcv. It’s the same axle for both sides. There is no left axle or right axle like halo.

Yes, the halo 30 axle with the short cv stub will work. Your talking a 1/4 inch difference in total length so it’s not enough to matter. We’ve used smart lok length axles which is what this is built after but we have also run halo 30 length axles with the short stub to make sure it’s good. 👌

Just curious, if the center is straight through, couldn't you run the same axles that the Halo uses or have you tried it? If the total length of the tail shafts is the same, then it should work too. @@jcleveland414able no because the cv cup length of the halo 30 is different. There is a left and right to the cup. The splines are also different lengths for both axles. The clip the holds the axles in would be in a different spot as well. The longer spline cv is also weaker because of the length and added leverage so we wanted to remove any weak points.

It’s stronger. For many reasons. No moving parts, there’s nothing to fail in it. We use the shorter inner cv on ours so our axle is stronger as well since it has less leverage.

@@3565ke our diff lock will be much different than that of a smart lok. Reason being is that a smart lok is only held locked by a clutch pack which can and will slip it in a bind. Ours is 100% fully locked when in 4 wheel drive. It won’t be as easy as steering a car with a smart lok but it won’t be horrible to steer either. Expect it to feel tighter at low speeds or on pavement going slow. If you are trail riding or moving it’s not that bad. Sitting still without moving and making real sharp turns on pavement will be where you feel it the most.

Not if you have a visco car. If you have a smart lok hour screen will say check smart lok every once in a while but won’t effect anything or go into limp mode. You can buy a bypass module from halo for 89.99 if you don’t want the warning message.
