On October 5, 2023, Boricuas Unidos en la Diáspora and Northeastern Illinois University co-hosted a lecture from Juan Dalmau, leader of the Puerto Rican Independence Party. Dalmau shared a historical and legal perspectives on Puerto Rico's colonial status and outlined some of the changes in Puerto Rican politics that are strengthening the movement for decolonization.

I had no idea about the differences of titles for former “incorporated” territories like Hawaii, Alaska, and other territories that became states, and the “unincorporated” territories of Puerto Rico, Philippines, US Virgin Islands, formally CUBA and so on… on Wikipedia it states, “Five territories (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) are *permanently* inhabited, unincorporated, territories” The US has no intentions of making these 5 territories a part of the US, rather just a colonial relationship for personal gains whether it be for military and/or industry and profit.

The national debt of the United States is $34 trillion dollars. When that debt comes due every American citizen will have to pay $94,000 dollars a year. Puerto Rico as a state will have to pay the same amount for a debt that doesn't belong to Puerto Rico. Knowing how low the United States can stoop I wouldn't be surprised that Puerto Ricans will have to pay more.

I hope he wins governor seat this year. PR needs change. I'm happy that he mentions the flag and anthem of PR and how they still carry colonialist ideology. The "shield" also carries religious and colonial connotations related to the Spanish crown and Christianity (it has a lamb, but these are not native animals to the island, maybe the shield should feature a guaraguao or hawk which is the apex predator in the Caribbean?).

If Puerto Rico could keep the billions of dollars, the United States siphon out of the island economy. Puerto Rico financially has enough money to be independent. Javier A.Hernandez has some books shining light on how Puerto Rico has everything it needs to be independent. Prexit and el triunfo del pitirre de dictadura colonial a soberania democratica. Puerto Rico has never needed anything from the United States 🇵🇷 time for the US to leave.

my gut feeling is Puerto rico will follow a similar path that the irish reunification movement in norther ireland. Before any talk of independence we need to focus on solving the everyday issues of puerto rico. If dalmau can win in nov and he can at least make progress on addressing the everyday issues in puerto rico it will pull more to our camp

Toda puertorriqueña y todo puertorriqueño, esté donde esté, sigue siendo Boricua, y tiene todo derecho para opinar sobre el estatus de Puerto Rico porque sin el colonialismo impuesto por Estados Unidos, seguramente no vivirían fuera de su tierra natal. Viva la República de Puerto Rico.

Con sòlo decir "todos los puertorriqueños", las mujeres estamos incluidas... Por otro lado, como "república" estaríamos peor que Cuba y Venezuela. Sería una pesadilla... que con Dalmau y su pandilla se podría llevar a cabo...

You live in a State of USA and want independence for Puerto Rico? The people that live in Puerto Rico don't want independence. Move to the island and then gave your opition.

You have absolutely no right to discriminate or disparage Puerto Ricans who for a variety of reasons are in exile!!! They have the advantage of knowing exactly how things roll in the mainland and are able to think outside of the box. You, on the other hand, have been the repository of sustained lies, unfounded threats, ankylosed narratives and pervasive brainwashing!!!
