I have several latouria types, and they're among my favorites. Since you're always looking for space savers, a nice minature is Dendrobium abberans. My absolute favorite latouria is my Dendrobium Little Norman (Little Atro x normanbyense). It's in bloom right now with 13 spikes. The flowers smell like vanilla, and they last for months. I may hop over to your Facebook page and post a picture so you can see it.

I have a few latourias too! They do well in my home and I think they are so pretty. I have a miniature that is white with purple stripes/spots that is no id and I just got an abberans. The white one is covered in buds right now.

I am with you on the D.abberans! It was my first dendrobium and still one of my most successful orchids! I have split my original a few times by now and have it growing several ways including on a terracotta jug, in a fancy wind orchid pot with sphagnum and a in a bark/moss mix in a both a ceramic pot and a white plastic inside a cachpo

I have 2 latouria in my small collection...the aberrans and the chocolate chip. They have become one of my favorite orchids because they are hardy and easy to care for. Unintentionally, I tried very hard to kill the little aberrans but she defied me and is blooming beautifully right now next to the chocolate chip. I haven't had any pest problems so far other than gnats which I control with droseras. Good Luck with your new latouria.

Great looking orchid. Hope she does well for you. I am so lucky I have had very few pests. The ones I had were eradicated manually. I had a weird green worm type pest last spring. I couldn’t get it, so I quickly unpotted the orchid gave it a good shower. I cleaned the pot with alcohol and repotted with new mix. Problem solved. That orchid bloomed this year after waiting 7 years. I had a magic worm.

I have one latouria den. - the ‘mini snowflake’ which is of course a miniature (aberrans x johnsoniae) with pretty plain white flowers. Despite this, I love the look of this orchid! Since purchasing it mid-November, it has already grown 2 new pseudobulbs and 4 additional flower spikes. It’s gonna be blooming for a long time!! I love it’s vigorousness! I’m glad their roots aren’t too sensitive because I might have to repot it with blooms if it keeps growing at this rate! Also, I’ve been using your ‘recipe’ for pest control and it seems to have done an excellent job getting rid of thrips (so far). I’d much rather try non-toxic first if I don’t need to go the systemic route. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Can I request a video topic? Unusual colored orchids such as blue and black orchids (or red phals, etc), maybe with a discussion about how online sellers can have misleading/edited photos that make them appear bluer or blacker than what is reality. Can really help with expectations. Maybe even ranking in your opinion which are the "bluest" for example. Glad to see you're back into dendrobiums!!

Yeah Dendrobiums are definitely not a favourite but I have been gifted one. A kingianium fluro king x den speckle gifted by an orchid grower I visited. Now I feel like I have a duty of getting this seedling to bloom and thrive 😂 Also with pests I struggle big time. I have been lucky so far and no big infestations but some aphids ugh it's the worst. I used methylated spirit on a cotton bud and thorougly watered the plant as well and it seems to work. Good luck and thanks for the cool update 😊

My favorite Latouria is a compact hybrid, Dendrobium Micro Chip. The plant stands at 6 inches tall, so it's great for cabinets or growing under lights. It also grows like a WEED, it can throw up to three flushes of vegetative growth each year, the plant might need dividing once a year or so. Best of all, it has a tendency to rebloom on it's old canes two sometimes three years in a row, so the show gets better and better. And it seems to thrown off two bursts of buds, one set in January, and another in April, so that plant seems to have flowers till June/July. And slightly fragrant, sweet. Great hybrid overall, and usually not a pest magnet.

Cute little dendrobium! I just brought home my first latouria as well- the tiny Chocolate Chip- and I am excited to see how it does in my climate. I don't love most dendrobiums because of their size. My orchids have to fit in areas safe from curious cat teeth.

You can look up sevin, or other carbamates danny. They are the least toxic pesticides. Last time I have read scientific reports about human health risks about it, they were rather more favoured in agriculture for pest controls because toxicity of carbanates are rare.

I tried it with a lot of latouria types and almost all died for me after the repot, but must admit one was a really huge one that just refused to grow new roots after repot and the other three just had not really viable roots when I got them. Lost another one after more then two years because it started to go downhill with yellowing leaves and stuff for no reason I can think of. Now I only have one huge spectabile, she is in a big pot and I am a little bit scared when I have to repot her in the future. I will give them another go when I see some with a good root system, really love them. :) In my experience the leaves really dont like to be sprayed with insecticides and fungizides, but I never had issues with pests on them so far.

Those are beautiful round growths-most of my Dendrobiums are miniatures that I bought for the bulbous growth shape. Den. aberrans has adorable round bulbs and small but really lovely, intricate white flowers. I have a small kingianum which I like because of its tendency for reddish growths in good sun and a Den. tannii which has clusters of bright flowers. I also have some micro minis, the Den. laterale and Den. kanburiense; both have tiny bulbous growths less than a centimeter in width and lose their leaves much of the year, and the laterale has stunning purple flowers much larger than you'd expect from such a tiny plant. My favorite may be my Den. lichenastrum var. prenticei with its cucumber-like leaves and its tiny but beautiful pink and yellow flowers. It's also really tolerant of being over- or underwatered I've found. I'm not a huge Dendrobium fan across the board, but nothing beats the show of my Den. unicum or Den. laterale when they bloom. But I'm rather partial to blooms on leafless plants.

Hi Danny……sometimes we need to vent about our struggles with our plants…..can’t pick a better place than right here. It isn’t being whiney. We’re all in that same boat at one point or another!😄 How do mealy bugs show up out of thin air without any new purchases or having no infestations for months?🧐 Can anyone answer that?
