@@shaggytoph Lucy mentioned the IT crowd 42:30 (though she says "it crowd" not "I.T. Crowd" lol) I just posted a comment saying how i like the show, the first reply about a bigot is regarding the show creator who is anti-trans. I personally didnt know about it till now but imo it doesnt ruin the show as its got a lot of talented people involved and is still very funny today. Just like how a certain much worse person was involved in pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, scream 1,2 &3 and the lord of the rings and dozens more but i appreciate the work everyone else put in and can still enjoy them. Its just one person's views and they're entitled to an opinion. I'm sure theres plenty terrible people involved in the entertainment industry but i dont let that detract from enjoying quality entertainment unless its like a direct product of evil deeds. I feel like if we boycott everything that had a single controversial opinionated or full blown evil person involved then i think we'd have to shut down every business going.

@asuka_the_void_witch yeah it's a shame it was made by such a tw@twaffle. I still think the show is hilarious. Quote it constantly. I try not to let the dbaggery of creators ruin things I enjoyed post-enjoyment. I dunno. Like I'm trans, I get it. It sucks. And makes me feel conflicted. But I'm older now and I just don't have the energy or fight anymore to constantly be on the front lines anymore.

So the kind of store that Ralph is describing, we used to have in the US! There was a place called Hastings, and they sold new and used movies, music, and video games! They also sold tons of nerd and hobby stuff like Legos, Nerf, disc golf, drones, models, manga. It was the coolest place ever, I'd spend hours there! Wish they'd come back!

@1_underthesun I have about 2997 hours, which doesn't factor in the time I played before the Steam launch. I cannot wait for PoE2. Mostly because it seems like crossing PoE1 with Elden Ring.
@1_underthesun
@1_underthesun Ай бұрын
@@KahranRamsus Same with the hours. The 2,700 hours is time only on Steam. And yeah, I've been saying for awhile that it's a blend of a twin stick shooter, PoE, and a Souls game. The Souls comparison stems from the danger of even normal enemies, having a dodge roll, and maybe most of all, that every hit you take by an enemy will have a far reaching impact (assuming they keep the new flask refill system in place). If flasks are far more hard to fill similar to Estus Flasks, then taking damage will be all the more game impacting. Honestly though, I think all of the Souls comparisons will likely only really apply to the campaign. I still suspect end game builds will be able to stack enough life regen, or stack enough damage mitigation, etc, to make taking damage not nearly as punishing as in a Souls game. Problem is, we've only seen very early game gameplay with extremely low level and low linked skills.

Just wanted to add onto Ralph's discussion on WHY there aren't more hoyoverse style games that aren't making millions of dollars, there is ALOT. As someone who spends a fair amount of time in the gacha community, there are so many genshin "clones" that are announced every month but the difference is that they feel less polished and refined and do just feel like "clones." Many of these genshin/hoyoverse style games shut down after a year or two at launch because the gacha market is extremely competitive

You're supposed "store" sounds exactly like Hastings, a store chain from where I grew up that had a book section, movie section, games section, music section, and "party" games section. Rent or Buy, and there was also an attached Cafe with coffee and pastries. It was absolutely the best store in the world and I was heartbroken when it closed. I remember my sister finally getting her driver's license and we would go down there and grab a book, take it into the cafe, then read through it while drinking coffee (without buying the book haha.)

The problem is you can’t just buy your games cause you still have to subscribe for internet access for payed games. Conveniently there is no tier for everything on console only. If you want access to online play and all the day 1 games you have to buy Ultimate which includes PC even though you may not use it. Meanwhile PC has a cheaper all games tier and they don’t have to pay for Online. Why in the Xbox ecosystem the people that actually buy an Xbox get taken for a ride I’ll never understand. One thing I will note about the end of TFS is that, while it feels conclusive, it has much longer legs than FFXIV, which is my main point of criticism I had with Endwalker: outside of hidden background lore, the story effectively hit the brakes when it finished, and I have no story pull to go back to, whereas the Echoes that appeared at the end of TFS feel a natural continuation, where the vanquishing of the big bad has its consequences, for good and ill.

Re: ZZZ and other MiHoYo Gacha games, you definitely don’t need to spend a penny, but you need strong will. And they are designed to take up a LOT of time. But these are NOT cheap free to play games, quite the opposite, they are AAA games with no expense spared distributed in the free to play model. I’m glad they exist, as there is no other way to build an ongoing game the size and quality of Genshin, but anyone with weak will beware.

I feel like I might be the minority where the changes in gamepass prices is beneficial. I got it to flexibly play any game I wanted on xbox, then I got a PC AND was included in my plan already, AND I was sharing all the benefits w my cousin on another xbox. The value was tremendous! But lately, I havent played a single day one title on day one, and my cousin will occasionally get on. Being able to pay less for titles i dont play on day one, while being to keep playing the games we play through gamepass, and keep sharing the goods, has been a positive change… I hope ultimate subscribers will feel similarly positive to the great value, and greater value its conducting bts
@zacharykasprzyk3671
@zacharykasprzyk3671 Ай бұрын
The problem with game pass is their target audience. Assuming most younger gamers (17 and under) cannot afford game pass with the price hike and even younger college age kids that is a big ask to shell out twenty bucks a month for video games and what you are left with is the older millennial generation who are now in their thirties and have more disposable income which is the group I fall into but the problem is we are starting families on top of working 9-5 jobs and do not have the time to play that back catalogue of games. I canceled my subscription as a result of the price hike as I know I will not have time to play the one or two games I play now on game pass and purchased them instead. Ralph is right it is a great value if you have the time but I think they are pricing out a lot of people that use game pass. Had they split the difference to 15 dollars a month more would have been willing to pay that possibly. This subscription model was flawed from the start you either need double the amount of players subscribed they do now to make it profitable or raise the price and risk losing a huge chunk of the base you have built up.
@drgonzo123
@drgonzo123 Ай бұрын
I wrote the exact same thing and then read your comment. I’m 38 so I’m right there with ya. Older gamers are money rich and time poor. I also believe that most of us own several consoles and a PC, spreading your gaming even thinner across all the platforms. Younger people who would benefit from game pass just don’t play games like we do. They stick to what their friends are playing, which is mostly free to play, social games like Fortnite and Roblox. I just don’t think the customer base is there. I’m cancelling my game pass subscription for now until some of the first party titles drop. I’m getting pretty sick of subscription services all around if I’m being honest.

I'm 23 and I totally agree, the problem is stupid twitter people defending the price hike or going as far as "you cancelled? Ok I'm buying an extra subscription to counter you cancelling". These fanatics are nuts

Whilst I agree, we can't act like gamepass wasn't insane value, and that even a fast-food meal now is $15. Matter of time inflation got to it

Oregonian here! Portland is the perfect place for a unique gaming store! We have a great manga shop, Powells City of Books is very different, but awesome! But we dont have a ton of movie/game stuff. I feel like a gaming store would be awesome.

16:40 I watch this podcast, and I only buy around 2/3 games a year. Sooooo yeah 😅 Also, I had Gamepass Ultimate (the 4 years one), but didn't renew because I wasn't making the most out of it.

Mad respect for recognizing that gatchas were a blind spot for you. Austin's review convinced me to give it a shot (with caution!) and your thoughts here echo my own. Would love a series from Austin called "Proceed with Caution" where he looks at games that are either FTP adjacent/gatcha or microtransaction heavy otherwise.

Love this podcast, been a fan since episode 1. Every once in a while, Skillup does 80% of the talking and it drains a lot of the fun out of it for me. Want to hear more of Jake and Lucy’s perspectives.

Dragon age inquisition has a perfect difficulty curve imo. It’s designed to where as you master the games mechanics/tools it allows you to scale the enemies to match so the actual gameplay always feels well paced and engaging. The modifiers are also a really fun idea even if in practice some are better then others

Looking forward to Ralph turning in his Guardian badge to become a fellow Exile. Probably as much chance of that as him embracing Guild Wars, but one can only dream of a cult, poe This Week in Videogames block each week.

I’m actually surprised the price hike wasn’t sooner. Im amazed that this took anyone by surprise? As a relatively new gamer all Ive heard is how XBOX is losing money on Gamepass, Ive kinda prepared myself for something like this.

Subscription pricing is tricky. The key with subscriptions is that you need to price it low enough that people forget it's automatically deducted every month. There is a thin line between this and pricing it high enough to maximize profit. I think what subscription services are seeing is that they can raise the price, take the hit from subscriber loss, and still make profit because of the price increase. This is what Netflix has been doing and everyone else is following suit.

"forget it's automatically deducted every month"???? How many brain dead dipshits actually pay for subs just because they forget it? It needs to be priced low enough that people are comfortable paying it.

I've dipped into Gamepass at times when I wasn't sure about something I wanted to play, but by and large, I want to own my games. I just need to exercise restraint with my purchases... at some point.
