It truly was a long hot Summer in ‘83 and such a memorable time of my life. Falling deeply in love with my first ever girlfriend (Clare) and I still hold those happy memories in my heart till this day. My first job, earning money and the whole world was your oyster. The ones that you love were still alive and healthy. 40 years later since the release of this song and it still affects me today the same way that it did then. It takes a genius to compose such a powerful and beautiful song that transports you straight to a happier point in place and time.

Shout to the top by Style Council, the 1st Lloyd Cole album, The Cure in between days, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Culture Club, FGTH... You Brits definitely ruled in those years. And all the radio stations here in the West of the Continent played it all.

@@musiclassica I feel exactly the same, there were bands coming out of the woodwork and they were ALL BRILLIANT! WE were literally spoilt for choice with so many genres all fighting for the tops spots. I shared music with my siblings so I had Punk, New Wave, New Romantics, Techno, Disco, Reggae, Mods, Metal all mixed in with R&B, Motown, Jazz, Jazz Funk, Jazz Fusion, Soft Rock and may more, so I appreciated it all and went to see tons of live bands as was lucky enough to live 25 minutes from central London so would hop on the tube and be at some of the best live gigs in town! The Style Council are one of THE most important bands to ever emerge and it's pathetic how fans of The Jam claim that The Style Council are rubbish. They were are are utter CLASS x I still remember when this piece of funk summer synth soul was released in 1983 and I adored it and always will xx
@GregOrCreg3 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed. I think the backlash was symptomatic of the snobbish attitude the predominantly white musical press had towards soul and pop music at the time (i.e. basically anything that wasn't a rock song played by a bunch of white guys on guitar). But like you say, this song and the band are class.
@johnanthonybyrne19953 жыл бұрын
If like me you lived and loved the music from this period you will be aware there are more iconic Style council songs than those of the Jam and great song writers have to move on or stagnate. I notice there is a new Style council cd released as opposed to the Jam wonder why that is ???

That's because The Jam had a fan base of teenage boys. Of course they weren't happy Paul decided The Jam were in a artistic dead end and split the band. The more open minded embraced The Style Council. The last few singles by The Jam were not too different to the first few singles by Paul's new group.

There were so many perfectly apt hits during that genuinely long hot summer of 1983 of which this was one of the finest by far - possibly the Style Council's greatest moment I think. Even though their output has been very much hit and miss - some genius songs and some dire ones. Other brilliant pop hits of that unforgettable 1983 summer which really bring back waves of longing nostalgia for those of us who were teenagers during that year came from acts as diverse as New Order (Blue Monday), The Lotus Eaters (The First Picture Of You), Freeez (IOU), JoBoxers (Just Got Lucky), Roman Holliday (Don't Try To Stop It), Tracie (GIve It Some Emotion), Bananarama (Cruel Summer), Gary Byrd & The GB Experience (The Crown), KC & The Sunshine Band (Give It Up), Wham! (Bad Boys and Club Tropicana), Yazoo (Nobody's Diary), Blancmange (Blind Vision), Altered Images (Bring Me Closer and Love To Stay), Paul Young (Wherever I Lay My Hat), Spandau Ballet (Gold), Depeche Mode (Everything Counts), The The (Perfect) ...... it was a wonderful pop soundtrack back when we were younger!! For those who were kids into the pop charts of the day, this was also a time also soundtracked by listening to Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1 and the infamous Radio 1 Roadshows - such happy times. Things started to change once some of us became students as we then started to discover different genres of music other than just the commercial UK chart stuff - thanks to people like John Peel and Janice Long and Andy Kershaw.

Here are your beautiful lyrics: I play out my role Why I've even been out walking They tell me that it helps But I know when I'm beaten All those lonely films And all those lonely parties But now the feeling is off-screen An' the tears for real not acted, anymore I'm all mixed up inside I want to run but I can't hide And however much we try We can't escape the truth and the fact is Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you One more covered sigh And one more glance you know means goodbye Can't you see that's why We're dashing ourselves against the rocks of a lifetime Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you (In my mind different voices call) What once was pleasure now's pain for us all (In my heart only shadows fall) I once stood proud now I feel so small (I don't know whether to laugh or cry) The long hot summer just passed me by Don't matter what I do It don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do Don't matter what I do 'Cause I end up hurting you

Just that first 3 seconds of music takes me back to being 16 again. Happy summers days Cambridge University, bridge of sighs. Beatiful location for a beautiful song. I love the beat on this song.

There was a time I couldn't listen to Pauls music -- just too many sad, confused, lonely memories and lonely parties as it were. Hearing it in the summer of '16 (and frankly never thought I'd be saying 'summer of 16') it sounds as fresh as it did 31 years ago -- UK music came slowly to rural US back then. I heard party chambers a few weeks ago (micks version) and the memories burst forth like a chasm. I've struggled to describe Paul throughout my life. Probably Drew Barrymore describing childhood in Never Been Kissed does it best, "In your memories, you will preserve him as simply the most romantic man you ever knew in your life."

Mrbrbusby .busby I think you are spot on and have described all the emotions Paul & mick pored into The style council....When Paul was in the jam his message was up front about what we as English kid's could relate to. Then the two geniuses met...And became part of my life my happy, sad, Beautiful time's and I am forever grateful because like you said 'summer of 16' fresh.
